its all lies dont buy it... create a google voice number.... give that out to people on craigslist..... hide your email address on all listings...these clowns wont be able to email you then... this is what i have done and ever since then.. not one message about nigeria or any other non sense

That's what I do on CL. In addition, I specify NO EMAILS. Text message or phone call only... to my Google Voice number.

Although it's sometimes fun to see what kind of BS stories these scammers try to come up with, like the one in the above post.

This is why I never messed with Ebay, ya get screwed on that site. Craigslist is ok, but People don't want to pay you anything. I have an Otterbox defender case brand spanking new in the box, this skirt emails me about it and ask me how much I want for it. I tell her $10, she said OK and never emailed back.

I had a Verizon LG flip phone brand new in the box never used. I was asking $20 for it to just get rid of it, this other skirt emails me and asks if I could come down on the price. I was like NO, it's a brand new phone. It's no iPhone, but if you need something to talk on it will work fine. She said she would have to talk it over with her husband first. Over $20??? Ummm alrighty then retard you do that.

I would not take a chance with anything over $100 on an auction-sale at eBay, although I have had great results doing eBay's instant sale (even though some here hate the thought of it.)

I sold both my most recent 3G and my wife's (back in March) for $125 and $140 respectively. Sure, I could likely have gotten more via an auction or a CL listing, but honestly, it's really and truly not worth the hassle to me if something goes wrong (as has been made extremely clear in this thread). I had my money from the instant sale of both phones in my PayPal account within a week.

I have been buying and selling on eBay since like 2001 or so and have only once had an issue that the buyer and I worked out amicably. Honestly, I don't even remember what the issue was, but since the auction was for less than $50 probably, it didn't phase me.

Good luck.

for those who dont want to hassle with ebay/Craigslist/amazon/auction sites you can always just sell your devices to gazelle.com You get less at convenience. An iphone4 16gb they pay you $150

exactly........ the first time i bought into the store into they sent me a fake papal email... htats when i knew it was time to use google voice

yeah, so very sorry to hear this, but indeed, there isn't much you could do.

I am glad that I checked the full insurance policy before I was about to ship, and then decided to cancel the sale to a Russian guy. He seemed genuine but upon realizing the number of cases like yours (just see eBay forum) and that 1) USPS insurance does NOT cover iPhones even if you paid for it (it's prohibited to mail radio-transmitting devices, and the iPhone has a GPS); 2) Paypal also doesn't provide insurance if the address is not confirmed, which for most oversea addresses, they are not.)

There is really no safe/sensible way to ship abroad. I avoided the loss, but then when I traveled in Southern Chile last week, my jailbroken 3GS was stolen! so, I feel for your loss.

Yea you get less than what you would on ebay/CL, but get upfront cash to avoid the hassle. Its not for everyone, people with less free time can just box up a bunch of old stuff and mail off for cash.

Not trying to be a turkey here, but this is patently false. USPS insurance certainly will cover an iPhone.

1. It's true that you should not mail radio-transmitting devices, but that means you don't mail something that is actively transmitting radio frequencies - not don't mail something that is CAPABLE of transmitting. Turn the phone off and it will not transmit.

2. GPS is not a radio-transmitting device. It's a radio-receiving device.

it's hard to clarify such condition, you know, luckily, I receive all my order from theideasforgift and i like the sale tracking.

you can take pics to show your clean, but it's useless, in my opinion, you should ask for ebay support center to solve for you as fair, defend our right of online shopping

I do this as well when selling electronics on CL. I learned long ago if you put a phone number for calling/texting and disable the email option - you will never have an issue spam. Weeds out the crap.

The seller always looses. Welcome to eBay!

I sold $1800 worth of GPS tracking/training dog collars on my eBay store and the buyer did a chargeback saying he did not authorize the transaction. When the chargeback was approved, he went to the post office and picked up the package.

I fought this sooooo hard with eBay and lost.

They just dont care. Trust me.

Insult to injury, sellers are not allowed to leave buyers negative feedback. Totally flawed system.

Yup, it sucks. Seriously. And now their fee is like 9% of the transaction + 3% for PayPal. http://benguild.com/post/9520320946/ebay-is-no-longer-a-viable-way-to-flip-old-stuff-for-a

A few months back I sold my iPad 2 on eBay when I purchased a 3G version. I had forgotten to check the box to ship only in countries I ship to and a guy from Russia won the auction. He e-mailed me and I told him of the mistake, and how I had heard negative stories about shipping to Russia. He had over 400 positive feedback, so I didn't cancel the transaction. He sent me a very long e-mail of everything I needed to do though. Basically you have to secure the package as tightly as possible in a box. Bubble wrap and bubbles in the box to make sure even if the box was slightly punctured nothing could be removed. Then you tape the entire outside of the box so that if the tape would be broken you would know the box was tampered with. And on the customs claim form you don't put the name of the item (in my case iPad) you put a general term, such as "mobile communication". He received the package in a week and I was left positive feedback.

I'm glad he had helped me through the transaction and everything worked out. I would avoid shipping overseas, I think in my case I got extremely lucky.

Makes sense, but chances are this was unfortunately the exception to the majority of bids like this.

Why is this thread still going, so what ended up happening with the OP?

Hah. I think we all got carried away with our own eBay experiences. What did happen to the OP anyway? :D

just check the eBay forums: there were many cases of lost claims because USPS said their insurance doesn't cover iPhones. I didn't make this up.

Or, here:
http://www.justanswer.com/law/48h41-hi-new-question-shipped-iphone-russia-stolen.html

"USPS is actually correct. You are forbidden under US law to ship cell phones and batteries via mail. Therefore anything you send is deemed to be at your own risk. That, unfortunately, permits the shipper to deny your claim."

Whether all this is true or not, I didn't personally test it. But there is enough evidence and discussion for USPS NOT covering it.

Now hold on a minute - does that include sending a phone by mail state to state - never leaving the USA? Or is this little small print monstrosity only for shipping overseas?

ditto, ditto, and ditto.

DO NOT SELL ON EBAY. You will have enough problems selling to folks in the states, even more to overseas persons. Welcome to the global economy. And by that I mean it's much more profitable (sadly) for some people in some countries to scam as a job full time people that reside in 1st world countries than to find actual, honest work. I have learned my own lessons and then some just for good measure. I now ONLY ever occasionally buy knickknacks on eBay, seriously. Anymore, if I don't need something that is worth less than < $100.00 and is just laying around my house I just find family or friend to give it away to. If I need to get rid of anything worth more than a bill or so I use craigslist and meet in a PUBLIC place. Within the last 3-5 years, eBay has really just turned into to too much of a ****ing circus for me to give **** all about the trouble.

^thats true

it seems like Craigs List you're just asking to get robbed. I mean where would be good to meet? Even if in say a fast food restaurant they can still get your phone and simply run ( if on foot) haha

The world isn't that ****** yet. Not saying it would NEVER happen but the odds are unlikely that it will happen to you. I have done many CL meet ups for high dollar electronics. Never had an issue. Besides, go with your gut. If you're not feeling it, move on. It's never wrong.

Another reason why they side with the buyer is if the deal did go thru, they will get their fee, if it is a fraud with the buyer, money go back to the seller, no transaction happen and no fee.

Any chance OP can contact Apple with the serial number of the phone and report it stolen, so it can't be activated/used? I never sell anything outside of the US for instances like this. I'm pretty much done selling on there regardless due to ******* buyers trying to scam.

Amen brother!

buy from ebay
sell on craigslist
