I say this in every thread like this. Craigslist only for iPhones. Deal face to face or these situations are going to continue to occur.

If only Craigslist stops ghosting my posts  I'm not spamming or anything but somehow my posts get ghosted...sigh.. No clue what's wrong.

I had a similar issue with ebay, I sold a laptop for $550.00 I actually waited 4 days to ship it, just to make sure the money got processed through my paypal account, then proceeded to ship the box to the Philippines (big mistake) 2 or 3 days later I got a call and emails from ebay telling me not to ship because the account was stolen, I tryied to stop it from being sent but it was already out of the US, I asked ebay the buyer to send the box back if it wasn't authorized but that didn't happened so I lost the computer, I had purchased delivery confirmation and insurance but ebay still decided to side with the client that kept my computer, thankfully I had transferred the money out of paypal into my bank account, so my paypal went in the negatives, I explained to ebay that I would not pay the money back to paypal until I got the computer back, because I followed all their shipping recommendations and I wasn't going to get screwed in both ways, they still didn't help so lets just say that I lost my ebay and paypal account but I at least didn't loose the money, now I just buy things on ebay through a friend.

Recommendations: don't ship to the Philipines, Nigeria, Italy, or any Asian country for that matter, and the Idea of having the postal clerk inspect and note the contents of the box is good, that way paypal cant help other steal from you.

I live in the USA and I have sold 2 iPhones on eBay (my old iPhone 3 and 3GS) and I have my iPhone 4 up on eBay right now in fact. I have never had a problem so far but I only ship to USA and Canada. There are plenty of people in north america that want to buy used iPhones so taking the risk of selling to people in other countries isn't even worth it. I also take Pay Pal only and ship UPS with insurance. So even if the person I am sending it to claims they never got it, I have proof with the tracking info if they received it. If they say nothing is in the box then I can at least put in a claim with UPS.

Last year I sold a Nintendo DS and 6 game cartridges. The person I sold them to said only 3 cartridges were in the box. Not the DS itself and the other cartridges. I asked them about the condition of the box and they said it was smashed and there was extra tape on it that was different than the tape I used. I went to my local UPS hub and they said what happens sometimes is that smaller boxes like the one I used get crushed or smashed on those conveyor belts they have at their shipping hubs and the contents of the box spills out. When they can they put the contents back in the box and seal it. In my case it sounded like they only found part of the contents. The good news is that UPS sent me a check for the lost items. I don't think they even looked into the matter since it wasn't an expensive item.

How long ago? I've seen where PayPal will turn a negative balance over to collections

I've sold over 10,000 items via eBay (was even selling in bulk transactions to a guy in Germany during the dotcom slide) and have always come out on top when the buyer claims something wasn't right. If you make sure you follow common sense when selling eBay/PayPal provides seller protection for a reason.

First off, eBay and PayPal are great if you actually follow directions and procedures. I've been selling and buying stuff in eBay for over 10 years with 0 problems.

Your problem starts with sending something overseas using USPS. If you can't get a signature confirmation, YOU DON'T SEND IT. Why would you send it when you couldn't get signature confirmation? That's required to win a claim against the buyer. Always send packages overseas with 3 things: insurance to cover the entire amount of the package, a tracking number through UPS or FedEx (not USPS) and a signature confirmation. If any of those 3 things are missing, you won't win. That's your fault, not eBay or PayPal.

I wish I had used my "don't do this intuition" when selling my 3GS to someone in the Ukraine. I have not gotten anything from ebay yet but I fear I will. He has not contacted me or given any feedback and was rather hostile when I shipped in the EXACT MANNER he requested.

How can ebay get the money back? Paypal will ding my account? Credit card? I will change them all if that is the case. I would rather quit both services than have them side with some scammer in the Ukraine.

I was about to sent a Samsung Captivate to Russiah.. HAHAHAHA thanks dude.... guy has 100 feedback as well... whats the guys id Original poster????? you saved me 160..... Im so happy !!

Why would the insurance go to the buyer? The insurance should go to you... You get the insurance, he gets his money back, no one is in the negative...

I had this issue and got an insurance refund from USPS...

eBay is a small seller's nightmare now. I've closed my account completely and now sell only on Amazon (which has proved quite fruitful) and locally via Craigslist. It's unfortunate that eBay has gotten so high-handed with sellers, to the point that you can't even leave a buyer negative feedback. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

Russia and Nigeria shouldn't be the last place you should send your phones to..

honestly, just don't do business with international folks.

Sorry, they should have been more clear that you don't SELL internationally. Buying has a lot less chance of going sideways.

If you had decided to screw any of those sellers and claim to have not received, they would have had very little recourse against you.

That's the problem everyone is pointing out and the main point of the post.

Hah, just got an email from a 'buyer' (scammer) from my CL listing. Told me that she lives in Utah and that she's a medical doctor so although she would be willing to travel from Utah to me (Northeastern US), because of the nature of her work, she can't. Her son's birthday's coming up and he's currently traveling with his dad who works at the United States Embassy in West Africa ;). She's asking for my paypal and address so she could either Paypal the money or send me a money order lol.

Has anyone tried giving the information and see if anything came through?

I think I've had one of these West African stories before, but only once and long time ago on eBay. My first listing on CL...interesting :)

On another note, I had listed the same phone on eBay and it finally sold. Not going overseas but actually to a college professor (legit college too) :) . CL offers and eBay price after fees came out to be similar so it all worked out for me :)

Now...I gotta sell a Blackberry Playbook 64GB new...up on CL right now but no one's biting...yet.

This thread has been fascinating. I am praying for the OP.

I have never understood the attraction for eBay. Too much to go wrong. Unfortunately people are just not honest.

Wait, wait.

You paid for the insurance, to be delivered at the spot.

Why would the guy in russia get 400 bucks from usps? The hell?

The recipient doesn't get the 400 bucks! You do! *correct me if I'm wrong everyone
