well that almost happened to me, and I was actually just sitting here thinking maybe I would have rather had white, so thanks for this.

what did happen to me was after waiting for hours outside the apple store on west 67 street in NYC, they were out of black 64 att 3g's, and my only option was a white one so I was going to take that. The apple guy told me I had 2 weeks to exchange it for a black one, no restocking fee.

They ended upfinding one, he said he had to wrestle it away from one of his co-workers, but now I'm thinking maybe they are running short of black and are told to push the white by initially saying they have only white. I wouldnt put it past them.

So it would seem to me that Verizon would and should have the same policy as Apple. If they do not I would complain to the manager at the store, call your credit card company, do whatever you have to.

If apple will take it back so should any other reseller.

Also, Verizon did you no favors, you did them a favor by purchasing it from them and not some other reseller or an apple store.

Different story in W14th st Apple Store. They sold out all white 64gb AT&T model and only black model is available! I really want a white one so I picked up a wi-fi only 64gb

surprised how many people who want 3G are coming away with wifi. I mean I want a 64Gb but I can make do with a 32GB if I have to, but 3G or not 3G is a crucial difference!

I went to the Apple store for a Black 64GB AT&T 3G and left with a white one. I used it for an hour and was so disappointed with the white I returned it to the store.

The white just looks cheap to me. It doesn't have the slick classy framing as the Black one. The manager took my email and said he will hold a Black one for me when they get their next shipment. I hope he remembers to do so.

By the way, when I was returning mine there were 2 other people waiting to get in the store to do the same thing. They bought white models because they were out of Black and were returning them. I REALLY think the Apple employees were pushing sales of the White.

The white sucks? What a surprise.

In related news, no movie theaters have white borders around their screens. Wonder why...

What did you guys expect?

In related news, almost every professionally framed photograph is given a white matte. Furthermore a white border around a front illuminated screen is a totally different proposition to a backlit screen.

There is no right answer, I like the white a lot, it matches my home decor, some won't like it, there is no "right" answer here.

That's a new angle for Apple; iPads, that match your home decor! (Just don't take it out of your home.)

I keep hearing this and I am very surprised. My lady came with me today and wanted the white iPad. However it's mainly mine so I got final decision and went with black. I am happy with my choice especially after reading what others are saying. I think the white looks nice but It sound like it could be distracting especially at night.

I am writing this in a dark room and am happy to say that the black yelps the screen stand out and in the dark can barely see edge of ipad. This my first iPad and I am happy I made the purchase.

I Was very excited that I managed to get a 64 GB white iPad Verizon tonight!

However, immediately the white bothered me. I just doesn't look right.

Anyone else hate the white?
Yes!!!!!

I bought black for me & white for her. She loved it at first, but now wants black after seeing the difference. In real world usage the white bezel is horribly distracting. Too reflective amongst other reasons.

The good news is you will have no problems selling yours. I've already got mine sold. The transaction happens today :)

Just to correct. There are many tvs white bezels.

Also I think the blacks looks better when turned off. But I like the white after it's been turned on.

And since I don't plan on looking at a turned off iPad I got no problem with the white.

I'm getting 2 iPads for myself
Though.

If this was facebook, and I could "like" this comment, I would.

Attention All Males: The white ipad was made for women so they can put their makeup on when the screen is dark. White adds more refelction so they can get that eyeliner right. In essence it doubles as a vanity mirror.

If you are a male and brought white, return immediately unless you plan on getting some Cover Girl makeup... ;)

Why don't you just find someone on MacRumors that has a black one and wants to trade?

There's a reason you don't see white bezeled TVs.

Thank you for saying those words ... this is why we never see white bezeled flat-screen TVs or computer monitors (except for Apple) ... there is one exception, being the brushed-gray bezel on the Samsung 3D 8000 model. It is stunning and not pitch black like 98.9 of the models you see. So there is a middle point between black or white. It is called brushed silver, like the back of the ipad. But you hit the nail on the head and for me, it has been said many times, you can never go wrong with black ...

I love my white 64GB/Verizon iPad. Black is whack.

You mean with black you never have to worry about taking it back.

OMG by bezel looks yellow
WTF i see light leaking in the dark

etc.

However, immediately the white bothered me. I just doesn't look right. I guesss the black really makes other things you see on screen look better. Furthermore, when it is turned off, it looks even worse I think.

What should I do ? It was so much money. Verizon data works great. It is almost perfect, if not for the white.

I'm considering putting it on eBay an offering free fedex shipping. Of course, I will then have to wait until more are in stock, and I will lose money on it.

Anyone else hate the white?

I bought a white iPhone 3GS. And that's just the back. I discovered it's kind of mere novelty. It just looked weird. When the iPhone 4 came out with such a superior camera, I decided to upgrade sooner than I normally would, since I use my phone camera a lot -- I usually wait at least a couple years on mobile devices. I went straight for the black model. Now, of course, if I'd been set on white I would have had to settle for black, but after the white 3GS I just wanted a black 4. And again, in the 3GS it's purely cosmetic, just the back of the thing.

eplasm: "this is why we never see white bezeled flat-screen TVs or computer monitors"

That made me go check. We have an old white MacBook the kids use. Even the bezel on that display is a light gray or off-white, not stark white. The white iPad 2 looks really cool with a black cover. When it's OFF. If I crack and upgrade to a 2 before the 3 comes out, I wanted a white one. I think I've just totally done an about-face on that. Hopefully, however, I won't crack, because it will just be tantamount to spending, w/ cover, $1,400 for an iPad 3 -- I don't need or even want the iPad 2 feature updates; I just want a new toy. It's good, my wife is generally quite helpful in assisting me maintain my resolve not buying things I don't need. ;-)

I too do not like the look of the white bezel. I had the opportunity to play with a 16GB white demo unit at my area Best Buy last night and it made me very relieved that I ordered a 32GB black from Apple. The bezel seemed to change different shades depending on the lighting in the store. At times it looked white, other times cream, and at one point it had a yellow tint. Overall I hope people are happy with their bezel decision and get their problems rectified, but for me black was the right choice.

It's funny to see such a difference in opinion regarding the white. After picking up a white one today, I couldn't imagine going back to black. I think the white just looks slick.

Yet other people simply despise it. I am sure you could sell it for a profit, or simply return it if you'd rather not deal with that.

I was apprehensive about white even though that's what I wanted. But that's all Target had, so I got it. Couldn't be happier with that aspect of it. Makes it stand out from my previous iOS devices. The green smart cover helps that even more.

Trade it

Put an ad on craigslist saying you want to trade it for exact specifications but in black...there is good chance you might get it. Just exchange receipts

I don't buy the 'movie theater screens and HDTV bezels know best' argument. The usage of the iPad is so distinct from person to person. I watch very little video on mine. I game and browse the most, and there a white bezel is totally fine.

It's totally subjective. Don't think too much about how 'distracting' the color of the bezel is. Self-fulfilling prophecy: 'I wonder if the white bezel is going to distract me?' If you're coming from the iPad 1, then yeah it'll be a striking difference for the first couple days.

I'm planning for white largely to distinguish it from my original iPad which my kids will inherit (and trash) - while mine will be strictly off-limits... at least for another year or so :)

I'm beginning to think actually the white would/could look quite nice if it was thinner.

The Black, as we know's disappears so you don't really get reminded by how giant the bezel on the iPad is.

Personally I think we could quite happily get along with a bezel half the width it currently is. If this was half the size, I think the white then would be much more acceptable to many.

I had a 1st gen and now a white, I just don't find it annoying or any different to the black one, guess it's just me.

The "there's a reason TV's don't have a white bezel" argument isn't really apples to apples (pun intended). With one, a TV, you're talking about a stationary object that is essentially a giant piece of furniture in your house. With the other, an iPad, you're talking about a toy that moves from room to room, house to house, and person to person (see the iPod).

I get your point, but it's not the same thing. In the end, it comes down to a matter of preference.

By the way, at one point in time, Henry Ford once said about the Model T that "any customer can have a car painted any color he wants as long as it's black." Imagine what the message board were like when other colors were introduced ...

You know what folks it comes down to personal preference. Some like it white some like it black, no correct or right answer.....had they come out with several color choices we'd be in real trouble.

Frankly, while I almost was forced into getting a white, cause I didn't want to wait three weeks, I would have dealt with it. But if I had the do re me, I'd simply get both, cause their both beautiful looking devices!
