I'm 13 and I use my brand new iPhone 3G constantly for everything, not just monkey ball or other games like everyone thinks I do. Just saying.

I bet by "everything" he probably means sms and youtube.

Someone at 13 doesn't need an iphone, hell a very basic cell phone (paygo) is all I'm getting my kids.

If you have reason to get an iPhone, then sure, go ahead, get one. It does annoy me that 13-16 year olds get one, but if you're responsible, and you have a reason to get one, besides the reason being 'OMGZ LOOKZ I GOT iPHONEZ! I'M BETTER THAN j00!' then more power to you. I mean sure, part of the reason of getting an iPhone is the ascetic flair and looks of it, and all the miscellaneous features of the phone, but it also is a great work phone too. The fact that i can use it for VPN, VNC, and Exchange mail for my company is great.

And yeah, i was the same way when i was 16...hell 5 years later and i'm still kind of the same way...i just realized that things cost money, especially when Mommy & Daddy stop buying things for you and you have to use your own money.

Did anyone else throw up a little in their mouth after reading through this thread?

I think you need to be 16 to get a job. Not sure about everywhere, but in SoCal, you need to be 16. I don't care, though. I don't need to work. Lolz

OK, now there's a kid that knows his (her) stuff.

I give you kudos for not misspelling "really".

Wow, everyone needs to get the hell over themselves. Srsly. Leave the kid and any other kid with an iPhone alone. "Oh no, this kid is spoiled and has the same phone I have, I'm going to taunt him on the interwebz because I'm being made insecure by a 13 year old!"

In other news, I'm 19 and put my new iPhone on my credit card. It was kinda necessary, though, as my Edge iPhone I paid for in cashizzle is cracked to hell, I dropped it off a balcony at a party lulz.

Hint to the 13 year olds: When you start drinking, don't bring your iPhone.

I find it sad when some 13 year old kid can spell better than your 19 year old arse.

Do you have Pay as You Go in the US?

Any phone contract I have entered required me to be over 18 and pass a credit check.

If this isn't the case, even if you pay for the phone through job earnings, it will be your mum who is liable if you go over your allocation of txts or talk on the phone for hours.

I had my first mobile phone at 13, but I bought it myself and Topped it up each week. It was also a Pile o' *****... but that doesn't matter.

I have no doubt you will use it more than the people who say 'why would a kid need an iPhone ', just remember if things go bad on the contract your mum will be the one who gets the problems, and this is probably the root of her hesitation.

I have a 14...almost 15 year old daughter that really, really wants one too LOL

I told her that when she can afford to pay the $30 data plan, I'll buy her an iphone for her birthday, Christmas, whatever. However, a child does not need to have a phone with a data plan at this age. She already has a regular cell phone with texting and a laptop computer.

By the age of 16 or so when they get a job, I can see a better need for one, however just now because someone wants one "really, really bad" is not a good enough reason. OP...wait a few years, get a job, prove you are mature enough for an iphone and can pay the cost of the plan, then present your parents with the request then. Every kid wants to grow up so fast and then when you get to our age, you want to be young again! :p

The age for getting cell phones now is getting younger and younger. 13 year olds now need cell phones.....

Oh noes! My comical musings with purposefully inaccurately spelled words such as "lulz" and "noes" definitely mean I can't spell very well.

Sucks that I'm an English Education major. Imma be ****in with all yo mindz!

How's the view from your mother's basement?

Well... when I was in high school, I needed a pager. Times change.

And, imo, if these kids are willing to go get a job and pay for the phone and help pay for the data plan, more power to them and enjoy your iPhone. I had a crappy job in HS, paid for the pager, paid the usage fees, pretty much has my parents cosign since I didn't have credit, but paying the bills was all on me.

If they expect to just get everything paid for by mummy, daddy, and "their" trust fund, then forget that. If they need cell phones that bad, stop acting like a entitled brat and settle for the cheap Nokia that'll do pretty much everything you were gonna use the iPhone for anyway for a third the cost.

Agreed. Time has changed. I think when I was 13, I wanted the big block nokia cell phone. We can't really compare our "old days" to the teenagers now. They are the millenial crowd. Everything has to be instantaneous and at their finger tips (hello iphone!).

My boss's two kids are those who do not know of the cost of anything. All they think is "I want". That makes me sick. There is no need for a 18 year old to wear everything once because it's out-of-season. And giving away your brand spanking new ipod just so you can get dad to get a new sandisk mp3 player is absurd. Or when you've lost your ipod for the third time in 7 months! Sometimes I want to smack some sense into my boss and her ex husband for clearly spoiling their kids. It's not so much I am jealous of the kids, although I don't mind being them. But in the long run, it only hurts them. They learn no value of things.

But then again, I wish those parents would adopt me :)

oh noes. when my wife and I are down in our basement, the view is splendid! I can see my hot tub outside along with my pool in my landscaped backyard.

How's the view from your bedroom? Did your mom make you some hot dogs for lunch? Don't forget to drink your milk, it will make you big and strong.

Very few people need an iPhone regardless of age, salary, job type, and so on. It's just a nice thing to have.

First off, I am 16, very soon to be 17.

When I was 13, I got my first cell phone. It was a bare-bones phone, with the absolute minimum plan etc. My dad knew that that is all I needed. There were cooler smarter phones back then, but nobody my age had much better than me. A year or so later, I got quite a bit smarter, and got extremely involved in computers, and shortly thereafter I moved to mac. It was at the age of 14 that I bought my first laptop, and those that surround me in my life, began to turn to me for advice when it comes to computers and tech.

When I was 13 I never could have needed an iPhone. A year or two after, I became considerably tech inclined, and while I still didn't need anything like an iPhone until now, it still would have benefited me, even if I didn't "NEED" it.

Maybe at the age of 13, you don't "need" an iphone, but you know how to use it, and might even get just as much use out of it as an adult... maybe more. I don't know you personally, so I can't judge how much you would actually use your iphone, or whether you just consider it an object that makes you cool. If you are one of the gifted young minds who could fully take advantage of the iphone, than I hope you can get one.

Oh, and when I was 13, I caddied on a private golf course/country club for money. It payed really well.

Lastly, All of you who don't think this kid could use an iphone... you may be right, but lets be honest, if he has membership on this site he probably isn't most 13 year olds.
