I'm not telling anyone I would smack them AND I understand the need for 16 year-old's to have cellphones so parents can reach their children and in case they are ever in trouble

I get that

But a 9-year-old? Are you kidding me?

A lot of 9-year-old kids have cell phones actually... I'm not saying you have to agree with it, but that's just the way it is. I live in a really well off area of LA, what do you expect? Lolz

How is that surprising? There are people everywhere that are rich and stupid. They can do as they please and you don't have to agree with it.

Their other nine year old friends with iphones. Lol.

A lot? Good grief, tell me you are kidding

I travel a good bit and have never seen a single 9-year-old with a cell phone. Ever. Heck, never seen anyone remotely LOOKING 9 or around 9-13 have one or holding one

Sigh, maybe it is just those areas, I dunno

If you can't get the point from my statement, I can't help you

Ah, because you didn't have a point? You were shocked that 9 year olds have telephones because you've never seen one but that's baseless and surely with the way people behave today it should come as no surprise.

I was thinking of adding my 6 year old onto my family plan and buying him an iPhone 3G 16GB.

Should I get him a black one or a white one? Also, do you think he will be responsible with the texts? Should I upgrade to unlimited text messaging?

Sorry, not kidding. Proof: my sister is nine and has an LG Shine. Quite a few of her friends have cell-phones as well.

Lols! Go with unlimited texting just to be on the safe side. :) JK

The point is the mental atrophy that this great nation's young people (and most of their parents) are muddling through. Rather than go outside and see a pine tree, they look it up on their phone or computer. They don't talk face-to-face with people, they SMS with each other.

Call me jaded, call me whatever. I just don't feel any child needs a cellular phone, and especially not an iPhone. Parents are using these things as interim babysitters rather than taking the responsibility they should when they created their offspring in the first place.

That and it is our incurable hunger for every man, woman and child to have the latest (disposable as soon as the next iteration comes out in 6 months) gadget that is leading to so many employment opportunities being moved overseas.

I don't disagree at all. I'm merely suggesting that it shouldn't come as a surprise that people behave this way. Since when are average humans logical, smart, or responsible?

I'm 22 and this thread makes me feel old and angry that 9-year-olds, hell even 13-year-olds, are carrying cell phones (let alone iPhones.)

I have an iPhone that I primarily use because I travel a lot, and need to check my work and university e-mail pretty regularly. Besides that, I do not see a huge need for ANY teen or pre-teen to need an iPhone, or at least a phone with a data plan.

Why does it make you angry? Take it from me: I don't care what and when other people buy stuff; it's not my business. Now if we're talking about whether or not I would raise children in a similar fashion then of course not but what other people spend their cash on is pretty irrelevant to me no matter how stupid I think it is.

I don't wish to put words in Roessnakhan's mouth (or keyboard as it were), but I don't think it is so much about the spending of the money per se, as what the spending of that money creates and entails.

Yes it's the same thing in this case with the whole young kids and teens conversation.

I'm fine if someone works for something, if a kid has a job that can pay for both an iPhone and a monthly bill then more power to them. Because out of that they have taken the responsibility in saving the money to pay for something they wanted. Do I still think a teenager should have said phone? No, but they did earn it. Teens who nag their parents for an iPhone and get one is not setting a good real-world example.

I guess to sum it up is I don't like people who just have everything fall into their lap.

I think you still need a form when you're 14. At least where I live.

Work permit in CA allows you to work once you're 15 and 1/2 with some exceptions. In general, almost all decent workplaces in CA won't hire until 16 and a lot don't hire until 18. With the current economic situation in the US, good luck finding a job. About 1 year ago there was still a good number of jobs available. Now, try finding a job with a permit and you'll be lucky to get an interview. (At least in the major cities/large suburban cities).

Go for the black one. The white one will show dirt stains more easily.
