I agree with leaving your contact info at the Apple Store with a manager and/or a number of employees.

I don't agree with going to the police because (a) it's unlikely the person who lost the card would go there; (b) friends of mine have had evidence kept forever (or at least not returned); and (c) the person who lost the card couldn't prove they'd bought it, so the police wouldn't likely return it to them anyway.

Too bad you can't dust it for fingerprints. ;)

Edit: of course, the person who contacts you (if any) might just have read this thread, so you'll need them to provide some sort of corroborating evidence. And I'd tell the Apple employees not to give out your contact info, or just give them an email addy.

Edit 2: your English is much better than the non-English of the majority of the posters on MR. :)

Dude, you're cool. You're much better than I am; I can only speak English. :)

You're doing the right thing.

I this don't understand how here in the states you can have that much cash and walk into a store and buy something like that with out ID..

Maye this is why this country are in hard time, this would never happen were I'm from.. Anyway i will call the apple store and the police and see what they say, then i will go from their.

To everyone sorry for my spelling but I this started talking in full english.. But I very smart I speak French, Spanish and Portuguese

No worries about the English-

You never know- it could have been purchased with drug money...again, why the heck would someone put that amount on a gift card- I don't think someone was giving their son or daughter a b-day present with that sort of amount!?!?

could be someone who doesnt know anything about Macs wanting to buy their son/daughter a Mac Pro or iMac for college or Uni.

Your english is fine. I'm not speaking english as my primary language myself and I can fully understand what you write.

You have a great conscience. Myself, If I would have found this card on the floor, I would have just said **** it and brought the MacBook that I need.

I agree with evilyankeefan. If you can't find the owner, giving it to someone that need it or to charity seems like the best solution.

If I had purchased a gift card worth $3500 I'd want a receipt. Even if it were cash.:)

I took 3 month of english why .. You want me to right in spanish or french ... This started talking in english.. I'm doing the best I can Sir

I was just wondering, I didn't know if you were just making a lot of typos by mistake and not fixing them. But you're doing pretty good for only three months. :)

You're going to trust an Apple Store employee, making barely above minimum wage, over a police officer?

If anything, don't leave it with the Apple Store. Leave your phone number with the manager, and anyone claiming to have lost a giftcard can call you. If you determine it's the rightful owner, you can meet back at the Apple Store to arrange an exchange.

I maintain, however, that going to the police station is the safest and most secure option.

Why not call the police, tell them you found the card, and have left it with the manager at the Apple Store. Then let the manager know what you have done, and hand over the card. At least this way, the person has two ways to be notified that the card has been found.

In an age where people buy coffee on their debit card, I marvel that there is somebody who has the guts to walk around with $3500 in cash, yet lacks the wherewithal to hold onto a card.

Well, if you're the kind of person who loses $3500 gift cards, the receipts might fall out too. ;)

Hopefully, you're right, but the person could just agree to meet the OP at the police station - although the Apple Store could verify the receipt easier. Too easy to fake one for the police, esp. if someone were to read this thread.

Yeah- if I took $3500 in and left with a piece of plastic I sure would want proof that that plastic was worth that amount of money!! Unless it was drug money.

Again, I can't see too many people putting that amount of cash down for a student going to college...knowledge or no knowledge of the Mac. YOu would think someone that has that amount of money would use credit?!?!

Why not use the cash to buy the Mac you want in the store or at least order it...what are they buying 3500 songs for their iPod? Seems a bit much.

dude buy yourself something. honestly. if you dont trust the police. and you dont want to go back to the apple store to give it to the manager. then you answered your own question. buy yourself a nice macbook pro. some accessories. and hang on to the rest for itunes or something. honestly.

let me start to all the peace loving apple people here

unbelievable

youre a stupid meany

Sorry for having a soul, I guess.

Do I even need to say that I'm being sarcastic?

Theres lots of people from a certain part of the world that dont get irony here so as i've found out, yes you do

Personally i dont like using things i didn't work for, so i would give the card to a local charity, especially as many are suffering due to the current economic climate, but its totally up to the guy who found it.

I agree that he should try to find the owner, but failing that, I'd keep it. He has at least as much claim to it as anyone but the original owner.

Ok well its 10:54 here in orlando, FL I will call the police and apple store in the morning and then do what they tell me ...

This is crazy my father her with me and like I said back home he is a officer .. He told me to keep it .. My father is not a good person but I still love him

I would ask the Apple Store manager what he or she thinks you should do.

I wouldn't involve the police.

this sounds bizarre, paying $3500 in cash and not even going back to the store and asking about it. they can also terminate the old card and activate a new one with their receipt so you might find in a couple of days the balance has gone and the card is inactive

personally, I don't even believe the guy.

What are the chances of someone finding a $3500 gift card and a $20,000 ring in their lifetime? Story just doesn't sound right. Maybe I'm just an ******* but thats my 2cents.

i kind of agree, but didnt want to be that guy who said it.

Don't be sorry!!!:) Personally I think if you can do this well with only 3 months it is GREAT! If I could pick up enough to be conversational in another language in that amount of time it would be nothing short of a miracle!

If you take the card back to the manager I would have to think that is the best thing as several others have said. When you purchase a gift card (even with cash) you get a receipt for the purchase which I am sure the manager would make sure that anybody claiming it would have to show to prove that it was theirs- so can rest assured that it would get into the right hands! I'm sure that when someone realizes it is missing that is the first place they will look after they get over the shock!

Congrats on two things- first your desire to be honest and secondly on your language skills! :)

Look for a "LOST" advertisement. If nobody states they lost it, keep it.

I disagree with this Karma bit or turning it into the store. Then, whoever you turn it in to will have a new Mac Pro.

Sometimes bad things happen and there's just nothing you can do. This is the case here. The problem is if you place an ad, everyone will claim it's theirs. You could put a FOUND ad and ask for the person to clarify the amount and date they paid. But, then you already went to the Apple store so others may know this.

If nobody wants to claim they lost it, keep it. Maybe this is your good karma. Maybe it was drug money or something else. Who pays cash? Do your due diligence then keep it if cannot find rightful owner.

Forget others who say give it to store manager, more likely you will do right thing than some store employee. That way someone else reaps benefit of your find. Only person who should benefit is original buyer or you.

My two cents. I once found a bag with $2850 dollars in it. Placed an advertisement, said found money. HUNDREDS CALLED ME. Asked people to describe bag and give exact amount. A day later, I gave the money back to an older lady who was giving it to her son as a gift for a new computer. She even had withdrawal receipt to show exact amount. I did everything I could, but I didn't tell anyone else the amount or bag it was in. That way I was 100% sure the rightful owner got it back.

This lady offered to let me have half the money, but I truthfully didn't need the money, and I figured it was for her son. She insisted that anyone else would have kept all of it. I assured her that I don't believe that is the world we live in and to be happy for her son who gets his computer.

I felt really great afterwards, but the truth before it was claimed, I hoped nobody would claim it. I had thought when making the advertisement, if nobody claims this in 60 days, I am buying my wife a new diamond bracelet. She got the diamond bracelet anyways. Didn't really matter to me one way or another in the end. We just think magical things when something weird happens.

So, placing an ad may just reward the wrong person at this point, but you could try, and ask for the person to show you cash withdrawal and receipt. That would make you feel pretty good. If it doesn't get claimed or you cannot verify it, buy yourself a new Mac Pro.

I hope my karma wins me the lottery in the end... would be nice to retire a little early. $2850 in my case or in your case $3500 means no change in your retirement plans... BUT the good karma of the rewards later could.

Yeah I kind of wondered about that too-- and I kind of feel like that is what is going to happen real quick when the person even realizes it is missing! ;)

This country isn't in a hard time because people don't have to show there ID when they spend a lot of cash. Showing your ID when you spend cash doesn't really make any sense anyways, because there is no link between you and the cash. The point of showing your ID is to determine if the card/money is yours. This is why when you use a credit/debit card, your are usually required to show your ID.
This country is in a hard time because we voted in the wrong people and let them make the wrong choices *This all came to a climax because we hit a natural recession (it tends to flux) at the same time these bad decisions were made.*
Hopefully now we are on the right track though as we have significantly changed our government.

on a more serious note this is what i found in my Apple store:

gay_apple_store.png

sadly no free $3500 gift cards were lying around :(
