The card is your's at this point in my opinion. This is a guy who payed $3500 cash and then dropped the gift card, quite possibly on his way out of the store. You checked, he didn't come back for it yet. Take it and have a ball.

Sure feel bad, for this poor guy who lost that card.
I did the Same thing back when I was saving up for my 2008 mac pro. I had save up $2000. I decided to put it on a gift card. That way their would be no temptations to spend any of it while saving for the rest.

By the way You are very lucky. It looks like this just may become your card. :D

Contact another MR member to go with you to the store. If while using it, God smites you, then you shouldn't have used it. If you live, you'll post, if you die the MR member will let us know the gory detail.

Now THAT is an intelligent post! :D

@ Next Tuesday: I don't get it. The card was bought at Christmas but since you said your gf said *she* lost it, you never got it right? So presumably she lost it on her way out of the store on 12/20 because she'd have no reason to be carrying it around after that. But it was found in a parking lot in March?

If I'm misunderstanding something please fill me in because this doesn't sound right.

OP you've definitely gone far beyond what many would expect of most people. You told the store, let it out in the open and waited for a reply. At this point, I say spend some of it. Afterall you put in quite a few hours working on this little project, you deserve a little reward for your efforts ;)

So there I was, a long day of serious shopping, walking to my car with what must have been 16 bags in both hands.

I reached for my car keys from my right pocket and pulled them out, opened my car (Peugeot 206) and drove home.

When I got home I realised I was missing my gift card that I have bought on behalf of my company.

I instantly realised it must have fell out when I got my car keys from my pocket. I phoned the apple store but there was nothing they could do as I said I paid cash.

Your such a star THANK YOU FOR FINDING MY GIFT CARD OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN SACKED!

Yup, entirely plausible since you live in England, not Orlando.

Bring the card home and leave your contact address at the apple store. Don't leave it at the police or apple store. Ask the apple store, to hang an advertisement at the store window: Found: apple gift card $3500. If the person tries to identify himself: ask for his receipt, ask for video footage of the apple store whatsoever. Never give it out to the police. The police will definitely keep it.

And if you don't hear anything in 3 months, then keep it. People saying to keep it immediately are just being jack*****. I feel really sorry for the guy losing $3500 cash.

Pixellated: It's called humour... or humor...

I thought it was funny because it proves the point that anyone can say anything they want on these boards about things like this. Seriously. You can make up any story - and in times like this, people will make up many stories for $3500. I found LERsince1991's post a good one because it shows what people are capable of.

The point is you can't tell who's telling the truth or what. I think that the if the OP is legit, they did enough already. However, it is possible that the OP is a scammer too, no one knows.

[removed my hypothetical creative writing story involving how a gift card magically went from falling out of a Peugeot 206 because there wasn't enough room (see pic, small car) for the gift card and 16 bags, and magically made its way over to Florida in a child's pocket who was on their way to Disney World who happened to lose their luggage and she just happened to drop it in a parking lot... oops, what was that about me removing that story?] :D

This is insane

To the one with the long name who found the card, may God see your actions and know you are doing the right thing. As for "Next Tuesday" you sir are a liar. One, how could your gf know about a product from apple before it came out? Two, it's called a freaking bank account and debit card, check it out. Three, you have no idea the lengths that people I know would go to for $3500, and they are some pretty smart people. This backstory seems believable at first, but there are too many flaws. Four, saving up $3500 from tips would take about 700 tables. Stop trying to get some easy money because it isn't working.

OP I hoped you stopped reading this thread, but if you are still reading, there is no need to do anyhing else because you have done enough by going to the store and letting them know the situation. Its not your job to find this person its their job to track down the card they lost. Leave it at that. and don't give it to anyone without some video footage and a receipt and consulting with the apple store manager about it.

If OP is legit - well put.
If Next Tuesday is legit - this won't make it difficult for him to prove it's his too.

This has been a really interesting thread to read, but come on ya'll... this story has more holes than than a cheese grater.

1) Anybody carrying $3500 in CASH in ORLANDO did not earn that money legitimately. There are just too many good reasons to use credit cards for large purchases -- personal safety, insurance against defect, and cashback/rewards program. ATMs, on the other hand, won't even let you take out $3500 at once.

2) Why was the girlfriend shopping for a big ticket item on Dec 20 -- 5 days before Christmas? She could have gotten the same item for much less hassle a week later. She could have given her boyfriend an IOU for Xmas day. (Apparently she didn't give the card to him anyway, since she is the one that purportedly lost it.)

3) If money means anything to you at all, wouldn't you guard that $3 grand very carefully? I mean... how do you just drop it on the street like that? I would have stuck it right in my wallet, then when I got home I would take it out and put it in the safe.

4) Why $3500? The MBP 17" is only $2800 or so. Even with some upgrades, that seems like you're overshooting the high end.

5) If money means anything to you at all, you wouldn't tie up $3 grand in cash for several months while you're waiting for a new product to be announced.

6) How could the card sit on the ground for 3 months without being noticed!? I've never gotten an Apple card, but from I what I see it looks like they are all fairly bright and colorful, and the Apple logo is displayed prominently. Anybody who sees that Apple logo would know its for something expensive, even if they don't shop there. If I saw a gift card on the ground with a Louis Vuitton or Coach logo, I would know it was worth picking up even if I've never bought an expensive handbag.

7) How could the card sit on the ground for 3 months without at least being picked up by a cleaner? Unless this Apple store is in a trashy area, my experience in Orlando was that everything was kept very nicely cleaned and manicured. All the trash is swept up, all the grass is cut neatly, and the trees are pruned. How would a card sit there for 3 months?

8) Call me a Xenophobe, but when I hear a suspicous story AND it's told by somebody with weak English, my mental alarm goes off.

9) The OP has only been an MR member for 4 days! When have we ever given this much credence to such an outlandish story posted by somebody who just joined?!

It would be quite remarkable if this whole story is actually true, but just because I want it to be true doesn't mean I'm going to let emotion sway my opinion of the obviously suspicious facts of the case.

My real interest in the thread is that there seems to be two different scammers in here; I wonder if they are working together or if one scammer is just trying to scam the other. Either way, this is going to be fascinating to watch it play out.

Exactly. Actually that may not be the case, but if the OP doesn't spend that found card he's going to mess up the karmic system. In the karmic system, it's finder's keeper.

1) The OP has been rewarded with $3500 for some good karmic payback.

2) The person who lost the card is being punished with bad karmic payback.

If the OP returns the card to the store, he's going to deprive his own karmic payback, and the next time it may come back with interest. Maybe he'll find a brand new car! Then what will he do? If you want to keep the karmic system from one huge karmic quake, you'll make sure to get your karmic dues when the opportunity comes, and not try to buck the system. Bush was due for a karmic payback in 2004, but the US citizens wouldn't take it, and decided to reward him with 4 more years. Then kaboom! Bank failure, economic collapse. So take the money and spend all of it!

Call me a cynic, but this guy never found $3.5k, but this kind of story is great to get a lot of replies. Let the thread die already. If the way he writes isn't obvious that he's faking the non-English speaker, I don't know what to tell you...

I haven't read every single post in this thread but from what i've read it reminds me very much of something that happened on a forum i use to post on a while back, some guy starts a thread asking for advice very much like this one because he found a $1,000 best buy card this guy was a good samaritan just like our poster here. So of course he went back to the best buy spoke to the manager blah blah blah turns out the card was purchased cash and there was nothing best buy could do, so he left his number in case someone came for it. Coincidently this guy grew up in Puerto Rico where police was very corrupt so he didn't trust the cops, and despite many forum members telling him to go to the police he refused...........

fast forward about 2 weeks

A thread pops up by a long time forum member turns out he sent this guy a private message offering him $800 for the gift card, the gift card founder agreed and payment was made via paypal.... of course no card ever came in the mail, turns out 3 other forum members had sent payment for said gift card after arranging a similar transaction via PM. One guy got a deal for $700 the other guy $800 and i forgot how much the third guy paid.

Anyway needless to say this guy disappeared and never posted again, We were wondering how many other people had gotten scammed and just never came forward publicly on the forum, the mods eventually closed the account and turned the PMs and everything over to investigators, the information was never shared with other members.

anyway this thread eerily reminds of that one.

I was pretty much with you until that comment. There are a lot of people in the US who don't speak English all that well. I really don't think the OP's lack of English is evidence of anything.

...anyway this thread eerily reminds of that one.

:eek::eek::eek:

Uh... yeah, I'd say so. When the same suspicious story starts popping up in multiple places online... that's a BIG red flag.

Except we've also got an MR member of some years claiming that the Gift Card is his. It's possible that HE is the one being scammed - the OP somehow found out he'd lost a card so he makes up a story that he's found one.

I've got my popcorn ready :D

There's a massive great big flashing red light going off under my desk and the sirens are drowing out my massive sound system.

Holy crap, it's the BS detector!

Wow , how stupid would you have to be to actually send money to a stranger for a gift card that you would have no assurance of ever getting.

Good point indeed. oh **** .Please tell me no-one has attempted to buy the 'gift card' at a 'to good to be true' price for $3500 gift card.., no-one has done that, have they?.

I'm sorry to say this, but if anyone did get scammed, it was out of stupidity. If you're willing to send hundreds of dollars to a stranger on a forum, claiming to have found a gift card, it's only a matter of time before you lose you money. If it wasn't this scam, it would have been another.

Some people just have to learn the hard way.

I do have a conscience

Went to the Apple Store a hour later after I find it and they looked it up and they told me that the person paid it with cash... So their was know way they could find the owner... Is that true ??? you can put that kind of money on a Apple Gift Card without some kind of ID..

Were I'm from in Spain you have to show a credit card and ID to put that much money on a Apple Card or kind of prepaid item

What should I people !!!!!
No full proof way to trace it I say buy!

Ahh the age old scam
I found a winning lottery ticket, but I cant claim it myself...
