Sorry to say, doing SIMPLE is not in some heads around here nor at Apple. I have lots of stuff that would need a mini usb port, and no it would not cost all that much to the overall system nor weight.

Do you mean mini or micro? They're different, with micro USB being by far the most popular of the two :p

Yes, because having the ability to use an SD card to expand storage is exactly like turning a porsche into a station wagon. Wow.

What is there to lose by adding the ability to expand storage into an iPad? Explain this magnificent logic to me.

I am also curious to know ;)

From Apple's perspective, what's lost with the inclusion of a SD card slot is the need for you to spend an extra $100 for the model with the extra included memory. Why would they want you to get a 32 GB model and add your own SD card when they can make you give the an extra $100 to get more storage? Not saying I agree but from their perspective it makes sense.

Step backwards my ass. Micro USB is standardised across lots of gadgets, you could just take one charger with you for your digital camera, tablet, phone, etc, instead of needing a different one for each.

Think simple.

This actually became a reality today..my bosses' blackberry phone wouldn't charge and he wanted to try a different charger to see if it was a faulty charger. My colleague has a galaxy s and brings her charger to work. As they both use micro USB, he was able to try her charger.

Standardised connections are better all round :D

And my Silhouette plugs in via USB :D

I might buy if:

1 gig of ram upgrade

Will buy for sure if:

1 gig ram
iPad Mini 7.85

Dual Core would be acceptable to me because I don't think the processor would benefit my light usage anyway. Also, storage wise I'm fine at whatever the lowest amount is, as I'm only using 4gbs of my 32gb iPad 1 now.

The only way I'll be purchasing the next iPad or any thereafter is if a microsd slot is included. If not, goodbye future iPads or iPhones for me. I'm done with IOS devices otherwise... Do you think iPad 9 will include an expansion slot? I'll be purchasing that one.

512 of RAM for iPad 2 is not acceptable. Much less for iPad 3. Are you out of your mind? I had to sell my iPad 1 due to its inability to work properly with iOS 5 I'm guessing due to low ram at 256mb, and lack of being able to reverse to IOS 4.

Really? MicroSD? A GB of ram as must-haves? What's the use case??

Why are you guys wanting a smaller ipad. I say bring on the 13" screen. That would be sweet.

I guess we won't be needing to save a space for you in line on launch day then.

Because I want one... lol. No seriously, I don't feel the need to justify why I want a smaller iPad, no more than anyone else needs to justify why they want a larger one or the same size we have now. Variety is good. :)

Must have: a name that begins with i.

I will be very disappointed not to get 1 GB Ram, 128 GB storage.

If it was available in 7" for the same price (or slightly more), I would get that one. Partly just to tick off all the people who said only a moron would want the smaller size, cause 9.7" has been declared by god to be the only size any rational human wold want in a tablet...

..I can make it down to the local Apple Store on launch day.

In all seriousness, if it doesn't have a higher res display, more RAM, faster processor and LTE, I'll probably hold onto my iPad 2 as it's meeting my needs just fine.

I disagree. Apple will need to put a SDXC card in the system in the next couple of interations or lose momentum to their competitors. SDXC cards of 512 GB were announced at CES two weeks ago and we'll see the Terabyte cards by the time we see Ipad 4. SDXC cards are going to grow in size (and drop in price) faster then Apple is going to want to grow the flash size of the Ipad (though we are likely to see 128 GB ones with Ipad 3) so at some point we'll get an SDXC port or Apple will start selling portable clouds or something in that vain. Look at the threads about replacing computers with Ipads, that happens much easier if you can put all your data on the Ipad, not just 64 GB. I have 30 GB of Apps right now on my Ipad 2, I'll buy a 128 GB Ipad 3 if its available just for the room.

Feel free to disagree all you like, but as this poster stated...

You will never see an sd card on a future iPad.

I'd guess 99% of tablet buyers have no need for expandable memory and many probably don't even realize it's possible. The only people who need it are powerusers like yourself and Apple seems to be doing fine without you. As you've pointed out, removable memory keeps growing in size and and it's cost keeps decreasing. Well, so does the flash memory that Apple installs in their devices and they'll continue to install it, along with their non-removable batteries and keep selling millions of units without breaking a sweat.

People keep saying this, but are not really looking at long term. Lets say you (like me) buys a 64 GB iPad 3 on the March 16th. What can apple put in the iPad 5 to get you to buy it? Sure more flash, but if the android tablets can take a 2 TB SDXC card, and Apple is topping out at a 128 GB model, thats going to be on every single advertisement. Everyone talks about Apple pushing the Cloud, sure they are pushing the cloud, but they are also pushing the Post-PC world, and in the post PC world, people want to have the data they have on their PC on the Post PC device. Card slots are just one possible solution (and apple may go with another, I talked about portable clouds for instance) but its an easy one to use and its not like Apple isnt putting a SDXC cardslot in each and every Macbookpro.

I'd be interested in seeing who in this thread actually purchases an iPad 3. Everyone should come back and quote their original post and then tell if they bought one or not.

For me, if it has a single improvement over the iPad 2, I'll buy one since I don't have an iPad yet.

#1 reason why I ended up with a Android tablet, I don't want to pay that much money only to be limited by the internal storage. At the price Apple asks for the tablet it really shouldn't be at as low as capacity as it is.

File sizes grow all the time and yet Apple continues to live in 2008. Once the capacity leader in mobile devices is now just part of the crowd.

I really honestly think iCloud is actually a bad thing for people that want Apple to put in higher capacities, in fact I think this "cloud" dependency is a horrible idea altogether. You have to have a good connection first off (which just isn't possible everywhere), get a wireless service that offers a decent amount of transfer per month (which not a single one does, 2GB/mo. thats TWO HD movies a month, get real) and then depend on the company to access your data (could you imagine depending on iCloud only to have it hacked or crashed losing all your data?). I'm really hoping this cloud crap is just a fad.

As a Kindle Fire owner the 7" is actually more convenient to hold and easier to use the keyboard without having to set it down somewhere to type or hold in one hand and chicken pick at the on-screen keyboard.

I don't get why there is so many inconsiderate people out there that think because it fits their needs it must fit everyone else's. Guess its just part of the incredibly selfish world we live in now.

Yeah great usability with that size let me tell you, 10.1" tablet I have now bothers me usability wise because I have to sit it on a flat surface, hold it with both hands or hold it in one hand to type with the other. Of course I could get 3rd party stands and all that fluff but then that completely defeats its purpose of being a "use anywhere" device and I mind as well use my PC.

interesting that a lot of the people in here want

1GB RAM
Quad Core
Hi Res Screen
4G
128GB some of you even want 256GB

Honestly if even half of that is on the next ipad its a winner. Sounds like the Hi Res, 1GB Ram and better but maybe not quad core processor. Thats pretty impressive and a winner in my eyes...

I did read somewhere, I just dont recall the site, Apple had planned on releasing 2 different kind of iPads this year? Now this was a while back. Could this be a 128 GB ipad with 4G network or the 7inch ipad that is getting a lot of momentum?

Macrumor members tend to have a higher demand from Apple than the general public. We're nerds so its not really surprising that these are the wants here.

As for the general public they could add Siri to the iPad 2, call it the iPad 3 and it'd be a glowing success, with the media and the likes praising the hell out of it.

The way Apple has the media wrapped around its finger (as well as the general pop) they don't even have to try anymore.

I'm a great apple fan, but as I'm critical of everything in life, I'd never give apple a free pass. It irks me that in 2012 their cheapest mac only offers 2GB ram. Am i the only one that finds a $999 laptop with 2GBram a joke?

I'm reading the responses above in disbelief. There is absolutely nothing to lose, and EVERYTHING to gain by adding the ability to increase storage on iOS devices - and people seem to have come to the conclusion that a micro SD is a loss, a detriment to the line, as if you would turn a BMW into a bandwagon as someone put it... If people were willing to let go and not buy these devices due to some* reason - the company would change and add them. But as of now there is no incentive. ipads fly off the shelves with or without whatever feature is missing.

If apple decided to release these things in eINK to save battery life and go easy on the eyes, suddenly people would object to color screens and point out how unnecessary they are since you see realistically everywhere you look outside of an iPad, and how healthy the iPads are on your eyes... and most users on macrumors would deride you for daring to point out that a color screen may be useful for some... and that's how the story follows... maybe iPad 6 will add a microsd, by then we'll all see the wisdom in their move and applaud them for doing it well. When we know the full reason for not having it now is due overcharging for storage.

LOL I hear you man, some users here are ridiculous and praise Apple for everything and make excuses for them.

1. HD
2. Thinner
3. Cheaper
4. Some amazing new features we don't even know we want yet. :apple:

(if they just add an S on the end I will not be impressed)

i will buy the ipad if....it comes out. wich it does.
If im going to be disappointed at the keynote is an other question.
Retina display and a good new gpu/cpu is priority 1. and with good i mean not desame processor clocked like 0.2ghz higher.
Tactile feedback would also be heaven for me, and will make me camp before store to get it. But thats not realistic and if its not announcement i still wont be disappointed.

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more.

I've just sold my iPad2. So I have to get an iPad3.

But for me:
Speed. (iPad1 > 2 was an amazing improvement, seeing something similar would be fantastic)
A brighter/duller screen. (I just find that the iPad doesn't go as bright as an iPhone, but also doesn't dim itself enough either)
Better camera/(s). (Enough said)
Slightly updated/noticable design (I've got be honest, I am a little materialistic, so people knowing I've got the new iPad would be nice.) ((Big headed I know, but hey..)

my wish list

1. 3G/4G/LTE comes free with it (with out the $130 surcharge)
2. 32GB as the default at $499

and i have ipad 2 wifi 32 GB and I am good with it for now.

- Retina Display
- Lighter!!!!!

Really above all else, I wish it would be a good bit lighter. Thickness is good, but a lighter device would be huge!!!
