Gmail..Never had a mobile me...

Hi,
There is a lot of talk about MobileMe and 2 IDs on here, but i'm just wanting clarification (if there is such a thing) about how this will work if I am using a Gmail account as my apple ID.
I can log into iCloud using my gmail id, and get the same as others, find my iphone and not a lot else, which is fine.
When I upgrade to ios5 tonight, and I go to set up my iCloud on that, will I be able to use my GMail account there, or will it force me to create an @me.com address?
The only things im bothered about syncing are my contacts, iWork and music and app setting, I dont care about Mail or Cal as its all done through google anyway.

Second question, If i wanted to take advantage of a free email address to use in the future if i decide to migrate, can I create an @me.com account on my ios device, then log out and then use my gmail account instead?

Cheers for the advice,
Paul

I found this on Apple's support forum:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/15377638#15377638

For families that currently share an Apple ID to purchase content (i.e., iTunes Store account). Will be able to share Apps, Music & Books from the Cloud.

When iCloud goes live, those with current MobileMe address will have them migrated. Those without will have to create an @me.com address.

These @me.com addresses will now become your individual iCloud ID completely separate from your main iTunes Apple ID.

**iTunes Store Purchases**
Within Settings App > Store: Each device will have to determine if they want to manually download all purchased content or not. This setting is defaulted to "OFF" It is currently working now, so you can test it out and see how you like it. For families with different tastes in Music/Apps/Books, you'll want this to be set to "OFF" What does this mean? It means you will have to manually update purchases among all devices (except the device you purchased it on...obviously). Since everyone wants to share Apps/Songs/Books in the family from time to time, everyone will have the ability to "see" this content under the "purchased" tab.

For families concerned about content getting on a child's iDevice. You can go into Settings App > Restrictions and turn off iTunes, etc. and manually manage the content for them. By Restricting iTunes, they will not even be able to see purchased content.

While it might be difficult manually downloading Apps/Songs/Books from the "purchased" tabs, it is no different than what you do now when managing all these devices against an iTunes Library. However, now you can do so without being at the actual computer, and you don't even need to be in the same geographic location.

My plans are to have the main Mac in our house download all content to have a central location for everything incase the data center ever crashes.

**iCloud Account**
Under Settings App > iCloud you'll be able to register your required @me.com address. This will be your unique syncing account. You'll use this account address for all your PERSONAL iDevices and computer! This address will cover calendars, email, contacts, photo stream, find my iPhone, documents in the cloud, etc.

In terms of syncing this content to a computer: As Steve Jobs said, the PC is being demoted to the same status as a device (so think of your computer as a device...not the central hub). Your family will have to determine who's going to sync their iCloud account to the computer. If everyone in your family is planning on using the Cloud, it doesn't really matter, because this is a Post PC world and you don't really need a computer anyway. Why, because all their data will be in the cloud. The computer is no longer necessary.

The main issue is with photos, because Apple will not hold all your photos for you! So, I suggest the person that takes the most photos sets the computer to their @me.com (iCloud account). When you want to migrate other photos into the same computer from a different device (another iPhone OR Cannon camera), you'll have to manually connect it and migrate those photos into iPhoto. Hopefully, Apple will eventually allow users to share photos via photo stream to another @me.com account.

Sorry for the lengthy response, but I promise families will have a solution of some kind. As a previous poster said, each situation may require some sacrifice. However, the sacrifices will not be any more challenging than what you do now.

**Final Thoughts**
iOS5 allows wireless syncing via WiFi to iTunes. Therefore, in a worse case scenario, nothing will change from what you have now except your devices will sync based upon your iTunes preferences just like they do now only without wires...while you sleep at night.

Steve Jobs mentioned in the Keynote, in regards to iCloud, the ability to do both!

Still kinda confusing. Maybe when I see the settings and options it will make more sense. This is going to cause a lot of confusion for users. I would not want to be an Apple support tech or store employee for next several weeks.

I'm confused too. Having a single appleid for store purchases for me, wife and three daughters and also having @me accounts for each of us on our MobileMe family account, which accounts do we(individually) use to set up cloud? Do we sign in with our @me accounts or do we all sign in under the appleid we all use for purchasing?

I read the above, maybe I'm dense, but I still don't understand...

Its only working in the US.

The icons and settings are coming up for Australia Now! However whenever i go to register i get error messages and it turns off again on my ipad.. The itunes match icons only become active once i reset my itunes / devices... So i don't think Australia is too far behind now.

Looks like I will be bringing my MacBook Pro to work so I can upgrade to iOS 5 sooner, rather than later!

Couldn't agree with you more. They need to let us merge. How many people have bought iPhones/iPads before iCloud was out? Last I read, 250million iOS devices had been bought. That's a potential 250million Apple IDs that do not use the me.com address.

Not to mention those of us who had apple IDs long before even iDevices were introduced... (with exception of the original iPod).

One Apple ID for iTunes content and multiple iCloud (MobileMe) accounts.

You guys should wake the ***** up....

I am waiting for a damn 6 hours now until you guys wake-up and release this....

Or pleas release on European times!!!!

:)

WAKE UP !!!!!

Hmmm perhpas you need to read his quote again... and then you may see who the retard is???

I also quote him:-

1) A non-Apple email account that I have used for iTunes purchases since iTunes first came out (long before dot mac or mobile me)

Meaning he uses a non apple email (gmail, yahoo, etc) to buy music, apps, etc...

Then he used his mobileme accountfor mobileme services like sync, findmyiphone, calendar, etc....

Just like millions of people have also done, he had an apple ID loooooooonnnnnggggg before mobileme was a glint in Steve jobs' eye.... he is most likely a long time user of apple products and had his Apple ID setup years before MobileMe was brought out.....

Thus leaving a lot of people in the same dilemma, which address to use for iCloud.

Get your facts right before mouthing off!!!
YES. And then I requote myself with what you should do.

Use your appleid for Store/GameCenter/iTunes. This account will only get the 5GB of free iCloud, but that's OK because you're not using it.

Your MobileMe account for iCloud/Backups/Syncing/Bookmarks/Notes/Reminders/etc and you don't have to export/import anything and you get 25GB.
WOW two accounts are SOOOOOO HARD to manage :(:rolleyes:

Do you really think any Apple employee responsible for initiating what we are all waiting for has slept in the last 24 hours?

The best thing to do is merge all the individual accounts over to the cloud..so that you all have your own email.

In the store setting on the iDevice just enter the same itunes username and password, you can then manually manage what you take from your main itune account to that device.

Apple have said this on the developers site

"If I use different accounts for iTunes and MobileMe, can I merge them into a single account and use it with*iCloud?
No. You cannot merge two accounts into one. However, you will be able to move your MobileMe account (yourname@me.com) to iCloud and, if you choose, you can continue to use a different iTunes account for store purchases and iTunes in the Cloud."

Not to mention those of us who had apple IDs long before even iDevices were introduced... (with exception of the original iPod).

This is the one thing I hope they come up with an answer for, hint, merging, soon. I have a LOT of iTunes stuff, pre Mobileme etc., that is tied to an e-mail address I haven't had for years. Please let there be someway to finally merge this stuff.

I have used icloud for about 3 hours now.

I just migrated my account by logging into icloud.com with me @me.com user details.

After this, it asked me to upgrade my account and it took me back to the mobileme website to log in. Logged in and then it converted the account.

I dunno what i was expecting, but I dont see why ios5 and icloud took so long to be released. This is coming from a big apple fan!

p.s i am a non-developer:D

How did you do this?!?!?!?

I've been trying EXACTLY the same thing for hours.

EVERY time I get: "This account is not yet eligible" when I log into MobileMe.

Please, please someone explain this. Are they doing it in batches according to the alphabet?

Yes, only if you toggle on email sync on your iCloud account, and yes.

1. I have my Google Apps custom domain account setup using Google Sync.
Mail
Calendar
Contacts

2. That address doubles as my AppleID used for
Store
iTunes
Gamecenter
Facetime
etc.
Activated on iCloud with placeholder/reserved @me.com email forwarded back to my main, and the free 5 GB storage mentioned in keynotes.

3. And I had my old MobileMe moved/transitioned to iCloud for:
Bookmarks
Notes
Reminders
Documents
Photostream
Find my Phone
Backup
And old mobileme account upgraded for free to 25 GB storage.

Anyone else feel sad that we got all this going on today and Steve is not here to witness it?:(

In a way yes, but to be honest I imagine that for Steve Jobs, product release days were 'just another day in the office' - I think he was above the kind of frenzy that us lot work ourselves into!

You can change apple id's to your primary email (but not a mobile me) via the apple id site...might be worth having a look if you havent already

A quick FYI.

If you're running the iOS 5 GM, sign into the iCloud settings pane with your MobileMe account. Once this is done, you can go to iCloud and migrate the account. Just sign in as normal and it'll prompt you through the steps. Just did mine.

so you didn't need the 10.7.2 to do this like it says on the final step?

I'm on iOS 5 GM and everything on the iCloud website seems to be working great for me!

I hope they release an update for Snow Leopard that integrates iCloud into the Address Book and Calendar apps, I don't really want to upgrade to Lion.

Thanks. Looked at that before, but, my primary e-mail now, and for quite a few years, IS a .mac\.me.com address. What I need to do is get rid of the old e-mail address tied to a lot of previous\itunes only purchases. I'd love to be able to link all those to my existing mobileme account.
