That’s the same error I’m getting. Doesn’t matter what you type in as domain name that error thrown up. Perhaps Apple have stopped new domains being added for now

Haha I wish I didn't get annoyed and delete it now! 🤦‍♂️

Same for me. I kept seeing that others were not getting the ”too many hops” error and I thought that if tried setting up from scratch the error might go away. Instead, the site simply blocked me from setting up the domain again.

Not really a big deal for me since I was just experimenting with a spare domain.

Yup. Still getting "ErrorThis email is already in use with another Apple ID." :/

Although I've yet to have a confirmation that my Apple ID has been deleted, even though it's been more than a week since I requested it removed. This is an Apple ID I can't even remember registering, and appears to never have been used :(
Got the confirmation that my Apple ID have been deleted. Still can't add it :(

Strangest thing - when I try to add a domain, I get the error that it can't be added. I had my wife, part of my iCloud Family, add the domain and it worked fine. Interestingly enough, there's a new workflow that detects some DNS providers (mines on GoDaddy for now) and automatically configures it. Was very slick (similar to Microsoft 365 Family setup).

Not sure if this has been asked before, but wondering if it's possible to set the domain up in my account, when my primary email for my Apple ID is already that domain?

And if another Apple ID currently has another email with the same domain in use?

e.g mine is hello@mydomain.com, which is my current Apple ID, and then there's usertwo@mydomain.com also registered as another Apple ID (not within my family).

Would that second account need to change emails to use a different domain as their Apple ID? It's not used for emails.

For context, I currently just have a catchall on my domain, and used that second address to setup an Apple ID for my gran

Feel the need to update my experience. Giving it's a Beta I didn't want to write it off, and they are obviously iterating fast, impressively fast.
I managed to get my Godaddy email set up (despite the typo in the instructions) and went on to do the same with my TSOhost one.
Both working, bingo!
I've had some real issues with TSOhost (account compromised blah blah) so migrated it to Godaddy for just URL ownership, time to update details in the Beta right?
Well this time it did it automatically! Literally just pressed a button and it linked all the DNS records itself (through a pop up window) which I feel is the right level of complicated for this sort of thing.

Looks like its working now, pretty impressive, and I no longer have to pay for hosting (a site and email).

PLUS ... I was able to add my old, inactive/closed "Apple ID" email now without a problem!! Yeah!!

Hi, can I just check something? I had an old Apple ID on a 'custom domain' (user@domain.com). I have closed and fully deleted (confirmed by Apple after waiting a few weeks) the Apple ID account. I now want to setup user@domain.com and every attempt gets an error "There was a problem with adding this email address. Please try again later.". Other accounts on the domain (any_user@domain.com) setup without any problems and work fine. Did you have to do anything to get that working? Thanks!

I am in the boat as you, my apple ID was already my custom domain and email before I migrated the domain to apple. When I did it, I saw here that some users suggested to change your apple id to something before adding the domain to icloud. I did that but now the previous apple ID email I had is giving me this error.

In my case I added the email before trying to change the apple ID back to the original one. At this point am too afraid to delete the custom email then try to make it my apple id again.

So in summary if you gonna try it, don`t create the custom email 1st try to add it as your apple ID 1st and see if that create the alias automatically for you. Am afraid to change to back now since everything is working minus having a protonmail account as my apple id now.

Not really ... it just started one day. As I recall it was about 2-3 days after I confirmed all of the Apple ID deletion stuff before I tried it, and it "just worked" ... and is still working perfectly. Sorry, wish I could be more help.

Ah gotcha.

Yeah, it's already my Apple ID, but might just wait for this to come out of beta...
Depending on what I need to do for the second user too

Still not able to add my wife's email address to her account. And even though I removed her email from my account more than a week ago, I'm still receiving all emails addressed to her.

When trying to add her email, in dev console the error "This email address is not available. Please try again with a different address" is shown. A little bit less generic than just "There was an error" which is shown in the normal UI, but also doesn't really tell you much.

My Apple ID has been my custom email for quite a while now, I forget how many years ago I changed it. I added my custom domain to iCloud on the day the beta was launched a few weeks ago, it's worked perfectly since then.

I have another custom domain that was used for an Apple ID some time ago, but never really used. I deleted the Apple ID and received the confirmation it was deleted but I cannot add the custom domain as I'm told it's already in use.

I've just added another custom domain to iCloud, it was a brand new domain registered through GoDaddy, and that added perfectly. I see Apple have changed the creation process so that all I had to do was login through my GoDaddy account during setup and the process setup the DNS records for me. I just had to click this message to enable it (which seems to be slightly broken). But it worked and was really easy.

Now all that I need to get fixed is support for custom email addresses with iCloud in other apps such as Outlook for iOS. I can only use my @icloud.com email address to login to Outlook for iOS so cannot send email from my custom domain. I have to use iOS Mail app to do that which is annoying.

I just took the risk and removed my alias (that was my apple ID before using Icloud on my domain) and then I tried adding the apple ID back but now it gave me this new error. "email address not vetted".

I was sweating thinking what about if I can`t re-add back the alias now? But to my relief I was able to re-added and everything is working. I guess will just have to leave my apple ID email with protonmail, does not really bother me as you can still login with your alias email as well.

Thanks for sharing!! Lets hope for a good outcome now that Keynote is few hours away.

Used to have my family domain hosted on me.com
Apple kicked me to the curb
Never trusting this again

Like other people I'm unable to add any domains after previously adding and deleting them.

I logged the issue in the feedback assistant two weeks ago, but I thought it was interesting to see the known issues listed in today's iOS/iPadOS 15 release notes:
  • Custom Email Domain addresses with delimiters like "+" or "-" can't be configured. (82425376)
  • Custom Email Domain addresses that are associated with a separate iTunes account can't be configured. (82358431)
  • Some accounts may not yet be eligible for Custom Email Domain. (82421769)

Similar problem here… no solution:-/

I'm now able to add domains that I'd previously added then removed. It's a bit messy though - there are some domain aliases listed in icloud email preferences that aren't listed in the account settings custom domain setup, so I'm not sure how I can remove them. Also, I get the error "This email is already in use with another Apple ID" if I try to set up an email address that's currently used for my other iTunes/App Store Apple ID.
