It's not what it actually costs, that's what I mean. You're paying more than it's worth.

And the iPod touch is basically an iPhone without a camera, light, vibration, or cellular capabilities. Why would having those things cost an extra $400? (or was it an extra $500?)

iPod touch 32gb (no 16 gb) = $299
iPhone 4S 32gb full price = $749

So $450 extra. Hmmmm. Never realized the difference was that much!

There is also another device on the market that is a direct competitor to the ipod touch, the samsung galaxy player, which features several different screen configurations from 3.6 to 5.0 screen size.

It would be very unusual for Apple to keep this device unchecked considering it is getting some moderate success. Competition is what keeps Apple in the game.

I really cant see them foolish enough to stall another year. Besides I cant imagine it being very hard to develop a new ipod touch on the basis of the new iphone, its not like it would require a whole new development team to get made.

As much as I hated the lack of updates last year, I understood that the ipod is no longer the money cow it once was when Apple was suffering, the iphone and ipad have become the big cash cows and the ipod line could survive another year.

I really cant fathom them keeping the ipod touch like it is another year as we are at a point where the current A4 processor in the touch is hurting potential app developments, especially in the games section (which is ironically what the ipod touch was advertised as).

More capacity (128GB version) would be good. Speed bump for internals too, Siri, and some of the features the new iPhone will have.

Exactly. Maybe with some other basic upgrades like a better camera, etc.

I think the iPod touch definitely has it's place, as a very portable pocket computer and media player, and it's much cheaper than an iPhone.

Pretty handy little gadget! :)

I also read that the average age for IPT users is 15. That a chunk of money for most.

this is true, but the thing is, young people don't have the ability to update their generation very often, which is why you see so many people with first and second generation iPod still, while it is very rare to see somebody with a first or second generation iPhone. So apple just makes less money off of iPods in general.

The only reason they sell them is because it is a very very small amount of tweaking and development to go from an iPhone to an iPod touch, yet it releases an entirely new product to a very large demographic, particularly one that can't afford the iPhone. The iPod would never survive on its own because the development that goes into it does not even come close to matching the profit they would make selling it, luckily the iPhone exists, and it dramatically surpasses the break-even point for development costs.

They make the iPhone, sell it, make a huge profit, then strip off all the expensive stuff and sell it as an iPod to lump more money onto the profit, it's actually genius marketing.

What?? They made the iPod touch only 32GB? There used to be a $200 model. Maybe they wanted people to get iPod Nanos again. I'd pay the extra $50 to get a $200 iPt instead of a $150 Nano.

There is a $200 ($199) iPod touch, but it's only 8GB. Since there is no 8GB iPhone, I couldn't use that for pice comparison.

If you want to compare devices of a like generation, then you could look at the still-for-sale iPhone 4 8GB.

Its no-commitment price is $550. So, the difference between the current 8GB iPod touch and previous-generation 8GB iPhone 4 is $350.

With the improved components and features in the iPhone 4S, it stands to reason that a hypothetical 8GB iPhone 4S would likely have a higher up-front price.

If you simply want an upgraded iPod Touch, I recommend buying a like-new iPhone 4 w/bad ESN. I picked one up from a reputable seller on eBay for $210 (4 month old Verizon iPhone 4 32GB) It was marked bad due to the owner's failure to pay their cell bill (be careful, some may be bad because they were reported stolen). It can never be used as a cell phone, but every other aspect of it works just like an iPod Touch, only better.

Whenever I look at iPods in the store, I keep being shocked by the prices... $200+... Still? In this day and age? Apple is making a killing here.

That price point was ok years ago, but now there are tons of 7" tablets out there for $200, and the comparison is starting to look skewed.

Sure, those tablets don't have the apps, and more... But still. The next gen iPod touch series needs to start at $150 or less. Or grow in size. Or perhaps the rumored "smaller iPad" will replace the line entirely.

The only thing I want is a space increase. 128 gigs please! If what people are saying about it being slow is true, then I'd like one that's 128 gigs with a better processor or more RAM (or both). I just want the space and to play music. I used to keep all of my music on a 30 gig Zune but now my wife and I have combined our music collection and it hovers around 60+ gigs. Well, I want to future proof my next MP3 player and I'd like to hold the entire library. Changing music is time consuming and annoying.

I hope not too soon

I just bought one for my Grandaughter for her birthday (got the 32G model) so I hope it has at least 6 months of being the top of the Apple line! IMO a new version will be released in Sep/Oct along with the next itreration of the iPhone.

If one comes out soon and she wants the new one, I'll tell her her birthday must move to align with Apples release schedule!;)

*Edit - fat fingered Apple to Aplle.

My kid really wants one for his late-September birthday. I'm guessing Oct. release date, but hoping for a late-Sept. announcement so I can give him a preorder printout for his birthday at least. :)

I'm fine with my iPod Touch as it is. It's a great device. I don't use it for gaming. It's used for news, twitter, music and a very good PDA.

All I want for a new Touch are a larger screen, an FM tuner, and a faster processor, the screen being the most important.

I'm considering the Galaxy Player 4.2, Sony's Android Walkman, or whatever HTC's upcoming media player if it's decent. A larger screen is easier on my eyes, although the screen resolution on the first two is only 480x800.

Great point, Apple has never been a value deal. Look at their computers, you can get other brand computers for much less that have the same specs. This led to the 'Hackintosh'

With apps-a-plenty on andriod, it would be in Apples best interest to guard their market share.

I'd actually be pretty happy with an iPad that's small enough to fit in a pocket (or at least close to it).

Let's face it: an update for the Touch would be convenient, but is one really needed? The 4G isn't as obsolete as many people make it out to be. The camera on the 4G isn't the best, sure, but it gets the job done. Video capabilities are actually quite good, though. And yea, sometimes it can be a tad bit slow in general, but I can deal with that.

Apple's already a year behind on the iPod touch. The current one is "okay" since it's basically the only choice you've got (save for buying an unlocked iPhone, I guess?) but I was VERY disappointed they didn't release an iPod 5 last year when the released the iPhone 5. Granted, the hardware is usually worse anyway, but still, the iPhone 5 hardware is well over 2x as powerful as the iPod 4 hardware.

Well it could be a bit bigger. In fact, it's really just the screen that needs to be larger. Move the home button to a small nub at the bottom and give the whole screen to display.

Ah, yes. Something like that would be nice -- make screen a little bigger while keeping the overall device size the same.

Let's face it..What with all these 7in Tablets coming out, Apple may ditch the touch and go bigger. The new Nexus Tablet is in some respects a iPod Touch killer.

I'm actually buying a Nexus when they come out...so long Apple.
