You know that problem is easily solved by Parallels/VMWare Fusion, or Bootcamp if it needs stronger performance, right?

I know that's an option. I admit I don't know much about it and I should learn more. I just don't like the idea that I need to jump through hoops or reboot to use software that was made for a different OS.

I should check into it, maybe I'll find it's not a bad process.

If there is no imac at the end of october, ive gotta go refurb. Don't really have a choice considering I need apple for work related stuff and my 2007 mbp is really on its last legs... hopefully well see something soon, but it doesnt look like it in all honesty...

For all the guys who are saying they'll go for a mac mini, please keep in mind that the minis are also overdue for an update!

I run Windows 7 (bootcamp partition) via VMware Fusion. It runs full screen in one of the virtual desktops. I just slide over to that screen and it's as if I'm on a real Windows pc. For everything except intense graphical 3d games, it's really the best of both worlds.

There is also an option called Unity which blends both OS together. You get the Windows programs menu showing on your OS X bar but I prefer the segregated method.

I would never return to windows.

This is the only reason I'll wait it out. If it comes down to it and Apple gets out of the desktop business, I'll Macbook it and connect it to a Dell monitor for my photo work. That's the only task I do that requires a larger monitor.

Kind of happy that there hasn't been a refresh yet. I've had the money quite a few times, but spent it on other things i need. Personally I'm fine with no 2012 upgrade if that means that the 2013 upgrade is going to be well worth the wait, and it does give me some time to save for High spek'd BTO since the last thing i want to do right now is open up a iMac for any kind of HDD swaps.

If they are taking their time, addressing heat issues, and making a top quality product then I'm fine twiddling my thumbs while we wait. If its just going to be a processor bump and nothing new then when they announce it i will be purchasing one on craigslist and waiting for something more then just a processor spec bump.

It's so funny to see how the list of top threads have changed from "next date", "when's it coming", etc... to "what will you do if not october", "upgrading a 2011" mid-october and people already loosing the faith... Gotta stay positive people!!

Already did it back in May. I didn't buy into the rumors then and I don't buy into them now, such as they are. I think 2013 will be a great year for Apple desktop computers however. As for me, the one I got will do what I want very nicely for years, so I'm fine with my decision. I'm glad I didn't wait.

This year's iMacs, even if they did launch a whole year ago, are really nice computers. Don't go windows over it. You'd just be hurting yourself in my opinion. The Mac with OS X is just so much better, including the ones you can buy right now.

If the current iMacs supported USB 3 I'd probably buy. If they also came with larger SSDs at the current price point I'd definitely buy. Just think the price point is very high for the current configurations and hardware.

Exactly, you might as well stick with what you have at these prices. I can't fathom why one would by a 2011 iMac right now. I plan a 2-3 year life cycle with my next iMac so USB 3 and at least a 128GB SSD with 1-2 TB HDD is a must. Throw in a next gen GPU and it's an easy sale.

Perhaps Apple needs to rethink the iMac and just make a standard 24 inch iMac at let that be that if this is how they are going to treat us.

Reluctantly will probably go MacBook Pro. Don't want to, but apple will at some point not allow these old iMacs to have the latest osx builds.... and their useful life will end 2 years early

My car is a 2012 and the 2013 are on the lot now with new features. Doesn't make my 2012 useless and I'm still going to get 5+ years out of it.

Unless you consider yourself in that 5% elite, just get a 2011 model and be happy.

Next time you are on that lot, compare window stickers on 2012 and 2013 models :)

I may do the same. But at more expensive for less, it would be a wrench. I think I would actually more money's worth from a 2011 iMac.

I will continue to wait patiently for a 22" Retina iMac. Imagine putting 4 full HD streams on a 22" screen. Awesome.

I'm going to buy a Macbook Pro. I have to set the end of this month as a deadline other wise I could be waiting far longer than I want to.

I need a computer that can run final cut pro x and other video/photo editing software very smoothly.

Which is the cheapest Macbook Pro I can buy with these capabilities?

I don't want it to be outdated too quickly but also I want to save a little money to buy an iMac either next year or the year after. Also I'd require enough memory so as much as a 250GB SSD is a quick drive it will also be filled up in next to no time.

Yeah, sure, but they cost just a fraction more than an iPad for god's sake. They're functioning Macs for a lot less, even if outdated.

The bottom spec in uk is £529 ($800) 2 gb £699 ($1100) for reasonable spec 4 gb etc add then the wireless keyboard, track pad and or Magic Mouse for £110 ($180) you are upto £810 ($1300) so for £919 ($1460 incl student discount) I get all the above including screen/monitor

How about I sell you a 2 year old car for the same price as that nice new one?

Thank you. This is the core of the issue. If Apple had done like they did for the Mac Pro, and cut the prices of the 2011 iMac, it would still be a worthwhile purchase. At full ticket, it is not.

And in reply to the original poster... I gave up a few months ago and got a 2012 MBP. It's not adequate for my needs. I'll wait until "later in 2013" when Apple EOLs all desktops and releases their new combined desktop or whatever it is, and then get that. I will only buy a 2011 iMac if the price is cut by at least 50% off current tags.

You want the highest-specced NON-retina MBP.

I think I'll jump ship to PC if nothing comes out in October or may be go and get 2012 MBP non-Retina.

The Retina MBP is a good deal. At first I thought it was overpriced compared to MBP Classic, but when you factor in it comes with 2x the RAM and SSD standard, it's worth it relatively speaking. Of course I can get all the same specs with Windows for half the price, but I won't get Retina nor OS X. I don't think I would be ok with a 15" screen for doing photos.
