I should here pretty soon after the EVO comes out, so I'm excited for that. 4G wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me though but I would DEFINITELY make good use of it.

I can tether with my Iphone now, but it's just not the same. I think the EVO has refined the wifi hotspot feature much better. Since I would ponder replacing my own home internet with it. I also hate having to rely on jailbreaking. My wife's phone had the home button quit working on it. We had no choice but to exchange it for a new one. The new one is not jailbreakable. If we were depending on the Iphone for internet, we would be up chits creek.

I have been pondering this since March. The EVO has soo many features and it looks like the new Iphone will somewhat match those features...Well somewhat. If the new Iphone screen is in fact smaller OR even the same size will any of you be switching to the EVO? Not a chance the new iphones screen will be slightly smaller but it is thought to be much higher definition which would more then make up for it

For me what makes the decision harder is the following:

Sprint is cheaper
But is also unreliable and a company going down hill losing millions of customers every year.
Sprint gives more minutes
I can't imagine running out of minutes but it happens for many people.
Sprint TV included
Mobile tv is generally terrible especially sprints. If you want good mobile tv buy a sling box the hook it up to your iphone (or any other phone for that matter). Or move to Japan because their mobile tv kicks ass.
Wifi hotspot
The BEST thing about spring i love this feature.
Potential 4G
Even though sprint has "4g" it is consistently proven that att's 3g is faster then sprints internet
Night and Weekend minutes start at 7 pm

Right now I pay 160 for my wife and me and we feel like slaves to the minutes. We get 550 to share. It just isn't enough. I don't want to upgrade my minutes with ATT as I feel 160 is way too much to be spending in the first place. I don't want to leave my iphone behind. I DO love the apps...But I am wondering if I can overlook all of the benefits switching to Sprint's EVO offers.

What say you?

If it is not for the minutes problem i would stay but if that is a problem for you then you should switch.

I don't get why it's better to have a higher resolution and smaller screen... That makes no sense. Look at any HDTV viewing chart. If you increase the resolution with the same screen size that only means to see the difference you have to be CLOSER to the screen. I'm not holding my Phone in front of my nose to watch a video... In fact, I want to set it on the table in front of me, or on the treadmill or whatever and watch it without my hands. The iPhone's screen is a bit small for that and no higher resolution will make a bit of difference there.

The only thing that's going to make a difference is a bigger AND higher resolution screen.

The new smaller high def screen may be fine and all if Apple does this... http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/04/apple-contemplates-head-mounted-iphone-display-america-cringes/

Like every other Apple device, many will complain and critique, then once it's out and the features are explained in more detail, and it's held in your hand, many will do a 180.

We live in times where nobody is ever happy.

Trust me higher definition screens are much nicer. Higher resolution screens really do make a difference if looked at side by side when playing video at each media players max potential. Thats the one way the zune hd is better then the ipod touch, its oled screen.

If the iPhone had higher resolution there would be more pixels used to make the image. Sense the screen is the same size each individual pixel is smaller, so the pixels themselves become less visible on the screen. This can result in a better looking picture.

Packing more pixels in a smaller scream means a crisper, more life like image. Way better than the current screen. Plus, my guess is - the output will be now be better for HDTV. Trying that with the previous/current versions would have produced a pretty crappy picture.

The more pixels, the better the picture.

I sold my Nexus One because I just didn't ever use it. Android just isn't all it's cracked up to be, regardless of the service or hardware.

Honestly, if the screen resolution increases, just keep the iPhone. You'll be unhappy if you switch, I promise you.

Your points are valid....very valid. It's just at first we went for the cheapest plan for 59.99 with 550 minutes. Now with internet and unlimited text and taxes, we pay 170 for that. Now we are like a slave to our minutes. I am constantly having to censor people " Hey man great story, can we wrap this up after 9pm please. " A couple of my friends work early and trying to catch them awake after 9....sober...sucks. :)

Not sure why people think Sprint is so much better. They are similar to T-Mobile when it comes to network. Verizon and AT&T rule when it comes to service. Also this nonsense about using the EVO and your SOLE internet connection at home is pretty funny as well. Lol.

You really think Sprint is going to allow the amount of data some of you use? Really? You also think that device can handle that much data without burning up? Really? Don't think so. Sorry but anyone that think a mobile carrier can match a land based ISP for speed is a tad delusional.

Hey - if you think it's better on the other side, pay those EFT's, sell your phones and BAIL!

I am able to upgrade in Aug to the new Iphone at a full discounted price. My wife is not. I can't upgrade without upgrading her phone. Well I can, if I want to sleep on the couch until she gets the full discount April 2011. :D

Anyway, I worked out that it's actually cheaper to switch to Sprint and pay 199 for each phone, and the etfs, than to pay 399 plus 199 for Iphone upgrades through ATT. Yeah weird right.

You may be right about the internet situation. It may be an option and it might not be a viable option depending on the signal I get at my house and the wear on the phone. It will be nice when I get my HP Slate to use with the EVO when im on the go. If it does work out at home, it could be possible to cancel the home internet. My ISPs internet service isn't that great anyway. I won't do contracts for FIOS.

Once again people are only looking at specs alone. They aren't thinking much about service, support, apps, build quality and many other things that apple has mastered.

I bought a windows 7 pc about a year ago for business purposes and I realized after a couple months how much better using osx was. Sold it and went back to a Mac and I use bootcamp for when I need windows (the Mac is better at running windows then the Dell was)

I look at Android the same way I look at windows. It has some nice features ( many copied from osx) but osx IMO is a much more robust and complete system.

I actually saw the usefulness in the Ipad. With the Iphone I don't think THAT much space is needed. I normally hold mine by the edge and am fine.

So with the EVO you might get a less polished OS with Android But you get:

Cheaper plan with Sprint
Free tv with Sprinttv
1500 anytime minutes with cheapest family plan
7 pm night and weekends
Unlimited mobile to mobile with any cellphone regardless of carrier
Mobile hotspot for up to 8 devices
4G

and.......wait for it.....A KICK STAND!

For me it is tough. I have a wife and a son and it's very hard to spend 170 bucks a month for 550 minutes and unlimited text for wife and me. It is more than home owners insurance, both of my cars insurance, all combined! I know people say, " If you can't afford it, don't get it. " It's not that I can't afford it. It's that it's hard to rationalize for such little in return from ATT.

W7 is a nice OS. OSX coming from Windows leaves a lot to be desired. If I were "raised" on OSX, I wouldn't know any better and would have a different view. Each has their place but OSX can stand with some changes to make it more competitive. That's for sure.

How did you buy a windows pc a year ago when windows 7 came out last Oct?

Exactly.
I dont think anyone would drop a home internet line and use a cellphone instead.
What are you going to do if someone else at home wants to go online, wait till your cellphone is back? Also the phone wont be able to handle all that data upload and download and eventually after heavy use will die.
Its nice to be able to tether on occasions here and there or on the go with a laptop but thats not what its meant to be to replace.

Might be able to do it with 2 phones like in my case. What if they figured out a way to not overheat the units? I may be reaching here, but it would seem a lot of people would do this and they intend for people to do this. Why offer wifi hotspot for up to 8 devices if you were just going to use it once in a while for one device? Just saying. It is possible the hardware might be designed for this usage.

At the end of the day Sprint is still Sprint.

The CEO seems like a nice enough guy. They essentially gave away their service for the past 3-4 years so they would have customers... but I have seen or heard nothing that indicates to me that I would appreciate the current quality or level or service.

Before the Pre came out, literally the ONLY reason I heard anyone use Sprint was because they got the employee pricing plan. I never saw or heard anyone say they used Sprint for any other reason than the price.

I can not say I have seen anything to real change my mind on that. I know they did not offer migration with that pricing to their new smartphones, but I have not been paying enough attention.

I know I have not seem a lot of, oh no sprint is awesome now, really.

Exactly. A phone used as a phone AND a full fledged internet connection wold more than likely die in a few months with the amount of traffic it would have to handle. Maybe in another 5-8 years it will be somewhat of an option. Until then, no. It's a convenience factor - it's not something that will save any money.

I think if anyone wants to save money, get a pre-paid mobile instead. Less headache, not monthly contracts, just a phone - as a phone. It get's to a point where you have to draw the line on all the gadgets. How many does one person really need, not to mention how much use will it actually get?

It's become more of a "look what I have" society as opposed to people actually needing and using a device to it's potential.

Yeah, the only people I knew of that were/are on Sprint are people that got a discount and didn't want to lose it or people that could not afford another carrier so they stayed with Sprint. Then you had the Palm Pre defectors that stated it was the "iPhone" killer. We see how well that went. Lol. The commercials are nice and the CEO looks nice, but the company itself is too small and not designed to be competitive.

You really think Sprint is going to allow the amount of data some of you use? Really?
Yes. I know it for a fact, because I'm using that service now, albeit branded as Clear. I use probably about 40 gigs of bandwidth a month, and have never had any problems.

Sorry but anyone that think a mobile carrier can match a land based ISP for speed is a tad delusional.
Again, I'm using that service now, and it's quite close. Comcast cable is still faster, especially for small downloads, but for my individual use the 4g connection is definitely fast enough. Maybe it would be different if I played MMOs, but for downloads and streaming video it's plenty fast.

You also think that device can handle that much data without burning up? Really? Don't think so.
That's what I'm most curious about. I'll make sure I buy their replacement-policy warranty. $5 a month is worth it, if I'm saving $40 a month on everything else.

Here's my thinking on the topic:
The iPhone 4 will undoubtedly have a smoother and better-designed OS than the Evo's Android. The iPhone hardware will also be snazzier. The iPhone definitely has better apps too. However, the Evo will be much less expensive per month, if its 4g works as well as my 4g USB modem. The 4g would also make an iPad work like a dream.

So it's a tradeoff: Do I want a better phone experience, or to save money and have a great iPad experience. I suspect that if I get an iPad, I'd use it instead of my phone for most things. I'd miss a few iPhone apps I currently use on my iPad touch, but I could use them and more on the iPad, and do them better because of 4g speeds.

I think talking about buying an iPad and saving money in the same sentence is pretty funny. :)

It's ok. The EVO's limitations will rear it's head a week or two after launch. You may be able to use it as an internet connection but it will never full replace a land based connection - just yet. Not to mention just because 4G is good in your area, doesn't mean it will be fore everyone else.

For instance - there is NO 4G coverage in VA.

There is 4G coverage in Va....You just have to stand as close to the DC line as possible. :p It's coming. It's in DC and NC...It's a matter of time.

There will be few limitations that will come. It's running an OS others know and the difference will be with HTC UI experience which will make it even more amazing.

I have Comcast and am unwilling to switch to Verizon FIOS under a contract. Comcast internet sucks horrible long dirty.... well you know. I am sure if I can get 4/5 bars at home of sprint signal, it will be better than comcast.

Have you had a chance to check out the HD2. Pop in a T-Mobile and just look at it for a couple minutes. I am not telling you to buy something I wouldn't, just look at it.

Bingo

There's more involved than screen size. It's the software that runs the phone that's important (also features, of course). If the screen is smaller I'd still buy it because I prefer the iPhone OS; If it's higher resolution, so much the better.

It's like offering me a 19" laptop if I'd trade my 17" MBP. Not gonna happen.

The EVO should not be that much different with interface.
