This ipad mini may or may not come but they're not going to update the ipad 3 with a new port. Completely pointless. We're talking about a tablet here and not a laptop. The ipad 4 will get the new port and all the other updates.

They're not going to update something now when a new ipad will come out in March.

----------

IMHO the iPad 3 was Apple's worst ever product, it lags like hell and heats up like a radiator when playing 3d games.. Lets hope this refresh rocks, if it does i will be first in the queue;P

It lags? Mine doesn't and I've not noticed it getting that warm.

It's better than the ipad 2, I had nothing but problems with that and backlight bleeding issues. Had to send it back in the end.

I have used a few and felt the ipad 2 was faster when browsing and panning about, the ipad 3 would continually stutter. I have used 3/4 different ipad 3rd gens and they was all the same. They also had weird pink/yellow glints in the screen... That is not what I consider a premium product, looked like cheap E-IPS. Also due to the dual lighting system the back gets quite warm... I would defo take a ipad 2 over a 3 and will patiently wait for the IGZO screens and A6 update, be that next week or in march.

It did not feel premium whatsoever, and it's agreed that it was a plan B product.

Well considering I don't have an iPad I'm waiting for the next one anyway! Just needs UK LTE support at the very least!

I think they will just refresh with the new port. They will do this to keep consistency across the product lines. The other addition could global LTE support, otherwise it stays the same. Ipad 4 will arrive in March.

I didn't know about the new connector last spring when i bought my iPad, but when I bought it I planned on waiting at least 2 years to upgrade again. I bought the first, then the third.

I figured the retina display (and future LTE) was enough for me for awhile. Major features. Knowing that there would be some new features in the next year's model.

There is a rumor out there that the Ipad 3 will be refreshed with new connector, new screen, less backlight, new lte chip, smaller battery, thinner and lighter. And most importantly for Apple, cheaper to manufacture. Ipad 3 is has the lowest gross margin of any major Apple product. And it is relatively heavy to use. It make sense for Apple to rework the tablet if they can cut production cost as part of the effort. Technology has moved a long way in the last few months. The 28nm Qcom chip used in Iphone 5 will save a lot of power and Apple can finally support LTE in UK, Austrilia etc.. We will find out soon enough when Apple make the Ipad mini announcement. Will see. If the new IPad cut the weight below 1lb and Ipad mini has no 3g, I think I am in..

Yes but for that sort of update they're going to wait until March. Technology is always moving at a fast pace. iphones and ipads have always had a yearly update, I can't see them changing that.

I'm still not convinced by this ipad mini rumour. A 7 inch screen is too small anyway. They aren't going to want to redesign the main ipad at the same time anyway because they'd want the focus on the mini.

I just hate having two connectors now. Thats why I want the next one. I want to move away from the old connectors as quickly as possible.

I once returned a MacBook Pro 13" months (about 3 months) after I purchased it because I complained that I had to strain to see the screen and this gave me a headache (it really did) .... I later went on to buy a 2011 Air 13" a month or so later
Did having a thinner laptop go a long way towards solving those terrible eye-strain problems you were having?

I think it was the glass panel of the MBP that gave me the headaches.

The Air 13" is better, though it's still hard to see because text is so small. I just have to enlarge the text accordingly. A bit of a pain. If the 15" MBPr wasn't so expensive, I'd look into that instead.

I am looking at the MS Surface. I will get one and then decide if I want the Surface Pro. If it is what they make it sound like the iPad will be getting a lot less use!

I can't speak for other consumers, but I want to think I've got the latest and greatest for as long as possible. The annual cycle goes by quick enough and is easy to budget for. Semi-annual updates, or refreshes, would be a turn-off for this consumer.

I upgraded on launch day to both the iPad 2 and iPad 3, but unless there's a major hardware refresh, I'll be sticking with my existing iPad 3.

I think the refresh is imminent, Apple knew there iPad was a total plan B product and need to take the orders away from Samsung for the horrible mixed pink and yellow screens... You will probably see a 10" IGZO screen and without doubt a lightening connector and an A6 processor. There is no point in Apple keep producing the A5X for just the iPad. IMHO the iPad 3 was Apple's worst ever product, it lags like hell and heats up like a radiator when playing 3d games.. Lets hope this refresh rocks, if it does i will be first in the queue;P

Imminent ?

That tells me it will, according to the word imminent, happen in a few weeks, tops

Actually, the iPad 3 is doing very well, and absolutely no indication that Apple is suffering so much as to warrant a refresh. As posted, its only about 5 more months until the next version. Perhaps you would like to have a POLL as to when we brilliant members on this forum think when this refresh will happen ? :D

This whole plan B train of thought is such a ridiculous and absurd notion. For one, technology moves at such a rapid pace that everything could be considered plan b for the next iteration. Apple, like every company, works with available technology. Did apple want the first iPad to be that thick, that slow, or lack cameras? Would it have rather released a slimmer, faster version with front and back cameras? You bet. That's why they released the iPad 2. When they released the iPad 2 did they want to put in 512 mb of ram, an A4, crappy cameras, a non-retina screen and no 4g LTE? No. That's why they released the new iPad.

Maybe the iPad 1 is plan B for the iPad 2. Maybe the iPad 2 is plan B for the new iPad. Maybe the new iPad is plan B for the newer iPad. Maybe the iPad 1 is really plan C or D or E.

The truth is that in the development of any product there are always compromises. Maybe the issue some have is the fact that the new iPad is worse in a few categories than its predecessor? It is slightly thicker, heavier, and warmer than the iPad 2. However you have to look at the tradeoffs here.

In my opinion, the new ipad is one of the most significant upgrades in apple history. First apple device to get 4g LTE (iPhone always gets new tech first), quadruple the pixels (when the device is just one big screen this is huge), double the ram, new processor, Bluetooth 4.0, improved camera, 1080p video, voice dictation (now Siri), all without any appreciable hit in battery life.

Do you still have tradeoffs? Sure. But this is like whining that the new rMBP sucks because you can't play a cd like the old ones could. You simply are focusing on the wrong things.

It's only getting a UK LTE refresh. So, if you're not a Brit don't worry about it.

Even my VZW iPad works plenty fast on their HSPA+ network.

Plan B was simply in regard to the fact that Sharp and LG were to be the main suppliers and both were developing screens that was to be easily illuminated eg IGZO ... These screens failed standards imposed by Apple so they opted for Samsung PLS high resolution screens. The problem with these screens are that they need a substantial amount of light to illuminate the LCD, hence the extra light tube and thicker ipad with more heat. The plans were changed at the last minute hence plan B.... The screens on the ipad 3 are amazing but have dark patches due to not bring adequately lit. These patches manifest as a yellowing of the screen... Every ipad 3 I have seen has this in some form... It makes sense for Apple to refresh as they will want to take business away from Samsung and also throw an a6 chip in there to negate the ipad 3 stutters that occasionally happen. And of course add the lightening connector;)

I don't think your anecdotes represent everyone's experience. Having owned an iPad 2 and 3 I personally can't say that the 3 performs any worse than the 2, and the screen looks fantastic, no "weird pink/yellow glints" at all, and lighting on mine seems quite even. It's a little warmer and heavier, certainly, but those are tradeoffs I am more than willing to make.

I love the iPad 3. I don't think I will be updating for a while. It is fast, LTE in the USA, and the screen looks great. I, personally, never have an issue with the weight and won't be updating for that possible change.

I will probably wait until it is no longer getting OS updates before updating.

I already upgraded twice. I plan on sticking with the ipad 3 for the next few years. Since I got my MBA I barely use it anymore. I think I've charged it less than ten times since I bought it which was around the release date. I still think it's an awesome device which is I why I'm going to hold on to it.

Last year I feared a quick refresh as I thought it would make my ipad 2 obsolete too soon. Now I couldn't care less. Refresh away.

iPad 2 Refreshed

The iPad 2 was 'refreshed' shortly after the New iPad was released. I actually bought one but only because I was still on a slowish iPad 1 and I didnt like what I was reading in regards to the issues a lot of people were having with the New iPad. Actually I was going to hold off until iPad 4 (with hopes of Sharp's IGZO display panel) however I discovered that the iPad 2 had been refreshed with a 32nm processor which give it an additional 1.6hrs battery life.
So, if the New iPad is refreshed then it might have the smaller CPU and the lightning port. However, will you actually know if it has been refreshed and will Apple (or Apple Store) tell you? When I spoke to the local Apple Store about the refreshed iPad 2 they didnt have a clue that it existed. Who knows.

But if the New iPad is refreshed I would advise to wait 6 months for the iPad 4 rather than get another New iPad.

I think there will be a refresh - probably announced as supporting more LTE bands and with the lightning connector as the only features, but they will probably swap out the screen if they have adequate supplies of the IGZO ones ready to go, a lower power LTE chip and move the A5X to 28 nm. This should mean they can either gain a battery life boost (as for the iPad 2 refresh) or clock the A5X slightly higher to get rid of the stuttering and maintain the same battery life. Unlikely they will change the case size though.

To the end user all they will see is more LTE options and the lightning connector at first glance.
