Will you consider changing phones?

4.5" screen is too big. I'd probably just stick with the iPhone 4. Also, I'd rather stay with the iPhone 4 for the life of it's iOS support, than make an Android OS phone my main phone.

To who? No carrier will be offering unlimited data by this summer.

Yeah but I would probably rather have limited data on Verizon than limited data on ATT to be frank. There is no real reason to be loyal to them. If they cut off the unlimited customers then they will leave in droves most likely.

Same here, but when the phone starts to lack functionality of a proper smart phone (specifically notifications), then i'll have to stick with that combo.
Again, i'm willing to wait for iOS 5 and see if it delivers, if not then yeah i'll be jumping ship.

Hardware is nothing without software, and vice versa.

At one point that was true.
But now it's not true, Apple follows the trend when it comes to their iDevices, specifically the iPhone.

Ummm actually the last phone they put out DID set the standard so that paradigm has not changed yet. Not saying it wont change but it hasn't happened yet. People act like iPhone4 is already irrelevant. I beg to differ.

Care to explain how the iPhone 4 set the standard?
I'm talking about setting the standard hardware and software wise.

You dont think it did that? What came out around that time did set the standard then in your opinion? Just curious. I certainly thought when I bought the ip4 that I was getting the baddest assed phone out. Maybe not...

I thought this thread was going to be about microUSB port inclusion.

It would be so great if they added a microUSB port to the side of the iPhone for syncing and charging.

Keep the 30pin port where it is.

I don't have a problem with the iPhone hardware, I'm not all that concerned about processors and cameras. My complaint is with iOS.

I struggle to find something that has changed since its inception. Sure, we have gotten some new features (copy/paste, MMS, multi-tasking), but for the most part it has remained unchanged.

Notifications should not be called notifications in iOS, they should be called interrupts. They are down right invasive. The home screen is stale and static.

Having just tried an Atrix for a few days, I will agree there are some features from the iPhone I miss (iPod, app store specifically), but I LOVE how Andorid handles notifications and I love the idea of widgets. I shouldn't have to enter an application EVERY time I want to read a text or see who just emailed me (the notification LED is a nice touch here too). The mini hdmi port is functional, and the included cable means I dont have to go out and spend ~$30 on an adapter. I also prefer Amazon MP3 over iTunes, for music at least (that's a preference thing though).

I understand I can accomplish a lot of this by jailbreaking my phone, but then its no longer iOS we're talking about here.

I will say, the Atrix is going back in the next few weeks, but that isn't a phone problem, its an ATT problem. If/when ATT fixes the issue, I'll most likely be back to Android, unless Apple manages to really overhaul iOS.

My vote has been "yes", I've been considering of switching already well before iPhone 5 will be released.

Like a happy marriage that is getting stale. An iPhone 5 or 6 with a bigger screen and newer interface may not convince me either way of staying. I am switching not because of my displeasure with iPhones or iOS. More to try something different and Apple's arrogance and diehard fanboys rubs me off the wrong way. I also wouldn't mind downgrading as long as it fits most of my needs. I don't need to have the so-called "best" or the "best-looking" phone. I didn't get iPhone mainly for looks and more for functions. I'm tired of seeing everyone have a phone I have though. I just came back from Best Buy two hours ago and saw a high school kid with an iPhone 4 and the same exact case I have. Ironically, that was the Best Buy I got my iPhone 4 from last June.

If I go Android, it would be for an Xperia Play. Kristen Schaal has got me convinced. But I likely may go with Windows Phone 7. Either a Samsung w/ S-AMOLED or a Nokia WP7 with Xenon Flash. I do want a front-facing cam though for Skype calls. My next upgrade is Feb 25, 2012. By time I get one, the Mango update will have it called WP7.5. I don't want to pay $299+ for a subsidized phone anymore. I will be happy upgrading from Amazon, Best Buy, or Walmart for FREE-$99.

My dream phone is a Nexus phone unlocked and has the slide-out gaming pad of the SEX Play. If only Google can improve Android much more. My iPhone 4 can always be used as an iPod touch and the fact FaceTime is Apple's own VOIP app and we have Skype, I can always make "calls" via WiFi and the front-facing camera even with airplane mode on. Video calling and texting will always exist for it even with an inactive SIM or none at all. My iPhone will never go away, but time to "think different" next year instead of sticking with iOS for 6 straight years. Yeah, I know I will get sick of WP7 or Android eventually just like iOS after three years and will go back to iPhone. But might as well try them out anyway and cure that itch before iPhone 7, 8, 9, or 10 get released. There will always be a better iPhone every year with a few new gimmicks and features to keep lusting for them. All routine.

Apart from a few Android ones..
The HTC EVO 4G was launched on the 4th of June, and definitely raised the standard.

For just a run down.. it had 3G/4G capabilities, 1GHz processor, a massive 4.3" screen, 2 cameras. OS wise, i feel it performed better as a 'smart phone' with their multitasking and notification system, apart from the normal Mail and Internet apps. But it was definitely not as fluid and stable as iOS.

iPhone 4? 3G only, 1GHz processor, 1GHz processor, retina display, and 2 cameras. The biggest addition to iPhone 4 Apple emphasized was the retina display, and frankly i'd prefer a bigger screen than a smaller higher resolution one anytime. OS wise, it had multitasking (which was nice), and home-screen wallpapers.. Something Android phones already had for a while. Thus OS wise it didn't really change that much since '07.

The iPhone 4 seemed like it was playing catch up, and still it failed to give 4G capabilities, and hence would render iPhone 4 useless (for 4G) once the LTE networks are widespread. It also failed having a bigger screen, but i guess Apple took a hint, based on the iPhone 5 rumors.
Hope the iPhone 5 will have 4G capabilities.

All in all the HTC EVO 4G can be used longer as a smart phone than the iPhone 4, imo.

Completely missed the point..

Having the option would mean a longer life for your iPhone.
I'm not the type to upgrade to the latest and greatest things, i still use an iPhone 3G.

Agreed.

Agreed.

But is having the option for a few years down the road worth having a crappy, battery sucking chip now? no, I'll upgrade to the 4g iPhone next year if I need it.

Yeah I don't understand why you would want a 4g phone before you can even connect to 4g. I think its still a matter of perspective and a matter of taste. I wouldnt mind a bigger screen but would rather have the screen with the higher resolution. And I am told that the new droids with twice the ram and twice the cores still dont feel as fast as the iPhone and battery life the iPhone still wins. Every phone that comes out... Even now 9 months later they get compared to the iPhone4. That is what I think makes it the standard. The standard doesnt even necessarily mean that its the best of everything. Maybe live tiles would be cool. I have some options via jailbreak but dont use them. The theme I keep hearing is coming from long time iPhone users. Getting bored. Want to see that greener grass. Thats fine but i am not sure that means Apple is slipping.

Edit - fair play on wanting to extend the life but i think i will be perfectly content to use 3g for the next year and few months. Its pretty much fast enough to do anything I want so whats the big deal?

They (Android) compares their new phones to the 9 month iPhone 4, because the iPhone has an annual upgrade while new Android phones are coming out every month or so. They'll be comparing the latest Android phones to the iPhone 5 as well, because they need to compare it with the competition.

It's not a big deal to me, i'm just stating that it's a nice option to have.
I just want to see a better OS and a 4" screen.

I've somewhat decided that no matter what Apple produces, I'm upgrading later this year. If the new iPhone doesn't appeal to me I'll probably go the HTC route and get an Android. A bigger screen would be nice. I do hope Apple impresses me though, as I would hate to lose my investment in the app store and have to start building a collection again

People say that they are only expecting minor improvements, but new phones coming out every couple of months is asking for Apple to make a MAJOR improvement.

I get a new mobile device every year so I am definitely picking one up this year. Im gonna wait until the new iPhone comes out but if it's not dual core I'll move on. I really want a 4" screen as well. O don't plan on selling my iPhone 4 so I'll always have the games and the AppStore.

From a Droid owner

A 4inch screen really does make a difference and is one of the reasons I love my Droid X. I plan on switching back to iOS this summer with the 5 but only because I like trying different tech and love Apple. Androids great and if you feel like you may want to try the phone you were talking about (OP) id say go for it. Its sad how many people accuse Android of being laggy and behind (mostly because they played with some old junky outdated phone) for me its been great and amazingly fast. By the way quit calling the iPhone the "standard", most companies are taking very different paths and coming up with phones that are incredible

You speak the truth. I like seeing posts like this, open mindedness is always a great a thing

iphone may not have the best specs, but it has the best overall mobile experience. Im sticking with iPhone.

exactly, and by far (even though WP7 is pretty cool).

as much as i LOVE widgets, I couldn't stand the Android experience, after trying so desperately for 6 months to convince myself otherwise.

Android- cool, easily has the most abilities, but one headache after another. inconsistent as it gets. no thanks.

WebOS- pretty awesome, too bad their phones were underpowered out the gate and they never got any real app developer support.

WP7- once they come out with some reasonably sized phones and allow multiple Gmail calendars, they'll be a worthy iOs competitor imo.

BB- perfect if you still live in 2006.

for me it isn't about the best "experience", it's about needs and compromise. it's a phone, not a roller-coaster.

would i rather have a bigger screen? yes. would i rather have a notification system from the 00's rather than the 90's? yes. am i willing to sacrifice the ipod feature? no. am i willing to sacrifice the app store? no.

that's pretty much all it comes down to, and the con's outweigh the pros.

the perfect phone for me would have a 4" screen, android notifications and widgets (the useful ones, i'd replace the iphone "search" screen with a widget "quick glance" screen), the ability to install different (full) browsers and the rest would be iOS.

I'm really hoping that iOS5 at least addresses the notification system, I don't see how they can ignore it any longer.

Not saying apple should, but they should have included more MINOR features, and I love the software (not really), but just how you can have widgets on your homescreen. I'd like to see apple do that, but even BETTTER, because that's what apple does.

I really want the android looks, but the iPhone quality in a phone.

I wonder how much it would really hurt them? I'd guess they have looked at it and decided it's worth the risk.

I read a CR study that said only 4% of users use more than 1GB a month. Obviously even lower at 2GB. Now how many of them will actually leave?

Heck, ATT may be happy if the high data users leave.

Yeah you are probably right. Thats a shame tho. I still think people will leave as their iPhone contracts are up. I guess we will see.
