A larger screen makes sense.

It allows Apple to stuff more internals into the phone. I don't think that Apple has any intentions of going to 4.6" and larger phones.

I could definitely see the iPhone coming in 2 screen sizes in 3 years.

4" slim.
4.5 inch

What it's going to take to get there is a move to make the UI more flexible and that's what Apple is doing in iOS 6. Soon it will not matter that much that the screen size changes because apps will just modify themselves to predictably use the space.

I hope you are right, cause I'm really looking forward for the iphone 5 and very high expectations. That makes me to believe IOS 6 will contain much more features than of announced. That would be a awesome upgrade then.

Here's my little prediction on the likely list of hardware upgrades we'll see:

Larger Screen
Upgraded Camera
Upgraded Facetime Camera
LTE
Faster Processor (maybe Quad)
Higher RAM
Longer Lasting Battery
Higher Capacity

And if the body style looks like the 'leaked' photos we've seen (which aren't confirmed of course) that will be fine with me.

What more could you really ask for at this time?

Quite honestly I think were cresting the hill to that plateau for a while with smartphones of today.

We're in the midst of the screen size war right now, right?

What's next? Now let's see who can make one with the longest lasting battery of any smartphone on the market.

Then what? Thinnest? No we've been there. Lightest? Nah, not an issue anymore. Holograms? What's the point?

Now things like 'Google glass', although a bit "out there" right now, I think this is where were going next. More wearable, hands free style tech.

Geez, just think what our kids will have in the next 10-20 years and we'll all be old geezers sitting around reminiscing about the good 'ol days of smartphones...of course...we'll be reminiscing to one another through our smart contact lenses then while floating around in our Wall-E chairs, lol. :D

Thank you. That's an honest post right here.

Tired of hearing that the iphone will rule the world someday.

Steve Jobs was brilliant, although he had his share of failures, the ipod, iphone, ipad revolutionized mobile industry.

With him gone though, who is the genius behind Apple?? I know there are many bright/creative in this world, but I'm not sure if there is one that replaced Jobs yet.

All we are seeing is upgrades iphone 5, new ipads, new macs. same technology/design since Steve jobs put out. We reach its peak.

What's there next direction? what's the next idevice? their future seems questionable. it's hard to predict, I could see Microsoft who was sidelined of the past few years making a comeback, or maybe a new starter.

The Google glasses is a neat idea though

I will be there cash in hand on day one. I waited and waited for Verizon to get the iPhone and when it did, I tossed my clunky POS Android and got an iPhone. It was like getting out of a Yugo and into a Ferrari. Everything works the way it should work and it just keeps getting better. Ok, so this one doesn't have dramatic cosmetic changes (that we know of) who cares? It's still cutting edge technology and I for one will be glad to cough up the dough.

That doesn't matter if you want what you want, and that's all you want.

That is for sure the case for most iPhone buyers who give zero thought to Brand X, WP8, WebOS or whatever.

My response you quoted wasn't about iPhone users. You said there will always be people who want more from other brands, and while I think that's true, it cannot be true to the same extent as people wanting more from Apple. Not especially when you're talking about phone sizes, which Apple currently offers no choice.

But if we were talking about iPhone users, it doesn't matter if they don't care about other brands. The whole point from the beginning was that it's impossible to think all those iPhone 4S buyers bought the 4S without some of them wishing Apple offered more in the way of sizes (and LTE). You're the one pointing that others also want more from other brands. Sure, of course, but when it comes to phone sizes and LTE, they can get it.

I actually disagree a lot with the idea that if the iPhone 5 looks like the leaked images, Apple is screwed. While the phone may have some similarities, it'll still be a huge departure from the iPhone 4S. For one, there will be no protruding glass (it wont look like a sandwich), and it'll be a helluva lot thinner. In discussing what we've seen so far with an industrial designer, he even believes it'll make the iPhone 4 feel very much like a "toy" because of how ridged and well built it will be. He said to image the 2005 Macbook Pro compared to today's Retina MacBook Pro. That's a huge difference in my opinion. That along with LTE, 4" screen, a better camera, iOS 6 and it will be a huge HUGE success.

I'm willing to seriously bet that when we all see it in person, it'll make all other hardware look like absolute garbage, but only time will tell.

im really certain that the leaked parts are the next iphone. Iphone manufacturing as gotten to such a high level, that its almost impossible to stop a parts leak. It just SUCKS that the new iphone is only taller and not wider. I use my phone primarily for texting or using portrait based applications. more and more lately my phone has felt cramp, and when i text my thumbs constantly bump into each other! If only they widened the phone or AT LEAST just got rid of the damn bezel!! idc how it looks, i just want to be able to text as fast as i used to be able to on my old blackberry...looks like thats never happening!

Even though ill be pre-ordering this the day i can, im disappointed that its just taller, but at least its something. Sucks that this is the design apple is choosing for the next 2 years. I think it will sell really well, but break records? no. I have shown this leaked design to all my friends who are anxiously waiting for the new iphone. They were all disappointed, and these are people who aren't tech geeks like us, but just normal people. and they most likely wont be buying the new iphone.

oh well, cant be king for ever right? last company that just put out minor revisions of the same phone is RIM, and they must be doing great! LOL

I hope apple surprises us, but more than likely what we've seen so far is the real deal...

Apple will be just fine, and sell a record number of iPhones, and you can count on that. With every new Android phone release Apple has always been "doomed" according to the naysayers, but with every new iPhone release we see that that's just not the case.

Thats pretty much all I want - LTE is not a deal killer for me, but the larger screen is. As long as it gets similar run and standby times I'll also be happy, and I actually DO like the images and renders based on the leaked parts.

I dont think it will be the same chip as the iPad as the iPhone does not need the huge graphics performance that the iPad does, so I think we will see a different A5X variant with similar video performance to the existing iPhone, but maybe better processor speed and also better low-power modes too

It's getting an A6 chip, which is the quad core Exynos chip from Samsung (same as the one in the S3).

they should make the whole front part of the iPhone 5 screen. They should make the home button virtual. That way they can at least compete a little with all the touch phones out with bigger screens. I personally would not get any other phone than a iPhone though.

A while back people wanted iPhone Mini's because it was too big... now it's too small... how big pockets do you people have? O_O

This article was a joke. He says some things that reveal his hatred of Apple in general. Overall it seems he's just ranting because he wants a bigger phone, but there is a large market segment that doesn't want a larger device.

Anybody who has ever bet against Apple has lost (including me). I doubt that will change.

And I agree.

I will switch to Android/ Samsung if this is the next iPhone. It looks really dated/ old and small now and i'm getting tired of the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and possibly iPhone 5 looking all the same. No thanks.

iOS6 looks old too. How come Apple isn't doing more innovation? Still the fixed icon grid while Google + even Microsoft have done more cool stuff in the mobile front.

When I had my 4S, any remotely long term texting/emailing made my hands cramped. It's so much more comfortable typing on a wider device.

Exactly, I hear you. I would think they would come up with revolutionary device.

The iphone will still sell like mad. You have the apple fans and simple users. It's very easy use a iphone. It's like the "dumb smart phone".

My folks are not tech savvy, so definitely without hesitation I would recommend iphone. A standard phone user switching to a smartphone that don't know much asks for an iphone, you got pretty much one to choose. In the other hand if they ask for an Android phone, they would have to do some homework to know which one to buy, as there are so many.

Also iphone users buy more apps, so it is wise to stick with the platform after spending all the money on apps. While it's easy for Android users to check out the iphone. Heck... I never bought any apps on my Droid, as most are free (where you have to pay in the app store), or you can get them free :).

 I would have thought Apple fans were more sophisticated.

I'm pretty comfortable with using voice dictation to crank out paragraphs of text with minimal errors. I'm a pretty good speaker with excellent dictation so my "hit rate" is pretty good.

When I replace my iPhone 4 with a "new iPhone" I'm sure I'll be using the dictation feature heavily. I don't want to carry a large phone around just so that I can use a keyboard (QWERTY) that was designed to slow me down in the first place.

I've had lousy experiences with iOS dictation on my third gen iPad, especially when a sentence gets to be long. Dictation on iOS waits for you to finish (which requires an additional step of hitting the mic key to let it know you're done) before compiling your words. And so when sentences get long-ish (sometimes it doesn't even get that long), its accuracy and reliable drop greatly. I'm not just talking about incorrect words, which there are a lot of; I'm talking about flat out missing words. Maybe it's better on the iPhone, but it's terribly unreliable on the iPad.

Conversely, dictation on Android is so much better because it happens live, and types out your words as you're speaking them (words pop up within a second or two of your speech) and so you can see what it's getting and what it's not as it's happening. And it so happens to get what you're saying accurately and correctly most of the time. Plus, you don't have to hit the mic key again to finish; you can just hit send or save or whatever. The whole thing is a much more reliable and smoother experience.

Anyway, I know there's a subforum for this sort of stuff, but the point being, dictation on iOS plain stinks. Maybe it's better on the iPhone for whatever reason.
