I am pretty sure people will be very disappointed with iPhone 5.
4 inch display is not enough for me.

I am migrating to Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 2.

Precisely!

I know what Apple is capable of, I've been a loyal, happy customer for years.

The best thing that ever happened to them in the mobile space is Android. Just the kick in the pants they need to stay on their game.

If true, and we only get an elongated narrow iPhone as the next model, it will be very interesting to see the overall response of the buyers.

On one hand they may accept it as they do all things Apple and allow Apple to coast. On the other hand some may actually push back and complain or migrate to Android to obtain the large, spacious display that truly enhances the smartphone experience.

The 4.8" display on my SGS III is so much nicer to use when one is composing messages and emails, as well as surfing or working on the web. It's a truly great advantage that one can only imagine until you experience it.

Even if Apple went to a 4.65" display that would be enough to keep me extremely happy. Although I've been using both Androids and iPhones over the last several years, my first preference is an iPhone if only it had a modern sized display.

As it stands now, it appears that we're only going to get this 4.0" rather odd looking stretched out display. Due to it's narrow width, there's no improvement in the landscape position which is the way I use it for emails. Therefore this is an iPhone I have no problem ignoring. I'm not about to give my cash to Apple for this rather warmed over model.

It will be the first time in the history of the iPhone, that I don't buy the newest model. Rather sad really, yet I just cannot support Apple's poor choice of milking the same old flat slab rectangular phone with a tiny display.

Oh well, hopefully they won't continue to milk the same old thing next year.

Name one smartphone that isn't a flat rectangular slab.

I don't think Apple is screwed as the article indicates. I do think some people will be disappointed. I had a iPhone 3G but I got the Samsung S2 LTE Skyrocket for the larger screen, widgets and being able to do more with the phone in terms of customization.

However I do have some complaints. My phone is outside of Apple's ecosystem which is more of a pain than a problem for me in terms of my music. An app called double twist has made it a lot easier but its still not as convenient as having the iTunes store on my phone. The other issue is with software updates. Apple is fantastic with this. With Android, excluding the Nexus, we have to wait until the carrier we are on releases it which can be 6 months or longer after Google has released the OS. By that time Google is preparing its next OS release!

I'm not due for a new upgrade until next year around the time when the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s would be shipping. Hopefully by then Apple has a radical design change from the iPhone 4. Also iOS in my opinion needs some serious UI changes. I got bored of the rows of app icons on iOS. Android isn't perfect by any means but it does give the consumer a choice. I'm not sure if I will go back to the iPhone next year or not but if it were this year I would not get the iPhone 5 based on what has been 'leaked'.

I'm with you there. I am very happy with my 4s and gonna keep it for a bit.

They definitely need a major UI overhaul. IOS 6 is kind of disappointing, those "exclusive features" were already on my previous Gingerbread phone.

I don't mind the icons, but the icons should display real time info. definitely needs a notification light.

The 4 inch display will be like my droid 3, but it's seriously lacking compared to GS3 and one X.

I would think Apple would come up with a game changer idea, i don't know... like a dual retina, virtual reality or whatever.

I am pretty sure people will be very disappointed with iPhone 5.

People will be disappointed with the iPhone 5, just like they were with the iPhone 4S. Just like the iPhone 4S the iPhone 5 will set new sales records. How many more years of disappointing phones will it take for it to make a dent? Don't know but with the quality of phones like the SGS3 Apple is going to have to step it up to keep their spot at the top.

I know everybody is talking about specs and all but you know it and i know it that 90% iphone users want is all a big ass screen and LTE..They wont see past that:p

Which is why the iPhone 4S is the best selling phone of 2012 thus far, and the iPhone 3GS outsold every big screen model of android phone sold in the USA in 2011.

Last I checked, neither of those devices supported LTE or had a screen larger than 3.5".

Not to beat a dead horse... but I think it looks damn ugly. I don't like the larger holes at the bottom grill or the two toned back. IMO they should make the next one all brushed/matte metal, but that's just me.

In the end though, looks are always ancillary to function.

I think it's somewhat lazy to assume that a mediocre iPhone update this year will still break sales figures.

I don't think they will be screwed, but can they really expect the same frenzy for a mediocre update?

The 2012 iPhone needs to excite, if nothing else to remind their consumer base what they are about.

The iPhone do sell by the tons.

iPhone buyers:
1) Loyal Apple fans
2) People who buy it for Apple label
3) People who try new gadgets <-- I fall in this category
4) People who are not tech savvy and new to smartphones
5) people who buy it because everyone got one.

2 to 5 will slip if people are more aware of the Android and Windows phone competition and if Apple can't keep up with innovation.

There are many not tech-savvy smartphone buyers and it is very difficult to choose Android phones, because there is so many.

With the iPhone it's all the same and is very easy to use. But as people get more accustomed to them they will want more.

I like my 4s, but sometimes I get bored with how limited it is without jail-breaking (i don't want to jailbreak). Yes the iPhone has higher quality apps, but the Android store had tons of crappy misc apps, its just fun to try them out for the heck of it. Emulators, tethering, apps to just change stuff for the heck of customization, all kind of stupid stuff.

After the 3GS, iPhone 4 and 4S, I did finally make the jump to Android. Not because I prefer the platform more. I actually do like Jelly Bean to an extent, but the main reason for me was 4G. I travel for business and use my phone as a hotspot quite a bit. When you're traveling and using a mobile hotspot then connecting your machine to VPN for intranet access, 3G just doesn't cut it. Especially if you are working with large graphics files like Quark or InDesign.

If this is the next iPhone, I am not sure what I will do. If its 4G, I will be more tempted to switch back. I'm not a huge fan of the color change - I would have preferred that they stayed with the aluminum finish and I do feel the bottom looks a bit too busy. I'll certainly be watching the keynote to see what's up and will go from there.

I agree completely.

The best thing that could happen in my opinion, is for Apple to get a lot of push back on this weird screen size.

Yet that is highly unlikely, since there is a sea of Apple apologists, standing at the ready to defend everything Apple does.

It's a bit nauseating.

For those who simply don't care, or don't mind Apples choice of size, and have the courage to admit it, that would be refreshing.

But to be compelled to stand up for everything Apple does, no matter how bizarre is the disgusting aspect of apologists.

For all those complaining... please, don't buy the phone.

That's one less headache I'll have to deal with when trying to get mine.

This is wishful thinking at best. Your conclusions are not rooted in reality.

In the months leading up to a new model, competing against a refreshed phone from 2010, no one was able to up their market share as much as Apple.

The doubters and haters better brace themselves because it's going to be an iPhone5 world in about 7 weeks...if the reveal rumors are true that is...

You really can't believe that any fraction of those buyers bought it because it's the only thing Apple offers, huh?

I wouldn't go so far as to declare "90% of iPhone owners want this and that" like the member you quoted, but the iPhone 4S and its sales records do not mean people don't want LTE or a larger screen for the iPhone.

This is coming from a person who thinks the next iPhone will do just as well if not better. And even still, it doesn't change the fact that people will buy simply because that's what Apple is offering.

Doesn't count? Say's who?

Eeek, do Apple pay you guys or something. It's like dealing with church solicitors. ;)

I am looking forward for the 5, I guess I must have such high expectations since the competition are getting interesting.

It's possible that's true. However, they want a bigger screen iPhone with LTE, not a brand X approximation which is why the mass iOS exodus that Internet experts have been predicting since HTC Evo has yet to materialize.

No Kidding. Move to the back of the line please, out of MY way! lol :D

Do most people here TRULY believe that all we are getting is a 4 inch display? C'mon now.

Sure, I can hear it now, Ive talking to his design crew..."yea just make the screen a tad bigger and WALAH! New phone!" pssshtt...again I say...c'mon now people.

Wholly agree. That's my point.

If the rumors are true, a .5 inch increase will more or less please iPhone users who want the screen size to stay the same. But for those hoping for bigger, half an inch will be virtually irrelevant.

Yet, they'll buy the iPhone. Again, doesn't change that some will wish it was more than .5.

I hope you are right, cause I'm really looking forward for the iphone 5 and very high expectations. That makes me to believe IOS 6 will contain much more features than of announced. That would be a awesome upgrade then.

I dont disagree, however, there is always going be a segment of any buying demographic that wants a little more something, so this is not exclusive to Apple, Samsung, HTC, Nokia or whomever.
