I just got my 4s not long ago.

I own a Macbook, ipods, and iPhone. I just joined this forum and damn it's funny how some you here kiss apple's behind.

I got rid of the my old Android (Droid 3) Gingerbread because it was very unstable. The 4s suits me well right now, but I'm not gonna deny that the IOS 6 and rumors of the iphone 5, are not very impressive.

It will definitely sell well, because most people just buy it for the brand and image.

These new phones with Jelly Bean are very very impressive. Galaxy S3, HTC one X are the benchmarks right now. Even Windows phone is catching up.

Steve Jobs turned Apple into a leader in devices for pass 8 years. With him gone, I think Apple will be in a down turn slowly back to the 90s. I'm starting to see this already.

The iphone and ipad changed the game, but now everyone has caught up and surpassed them.

A new i device will need to be invented, who has the mind like Steve Jobs?

If you do not count taking/viewing pictures and games... I bet I turn my iPhone to landscape less than once a week. I have two iPhones (work and personal), and I kill the battery on one of them everyday from heavy usage.

None of my friends type/text on the landscape keyboard. I personally do not like and have no use for the landscape keyboard. If it could turn it off, I would because I hate when I am trying to text someone while I am laying down the screen flips to landscape... God that is annoying. I would switch the silent On/Off button to lock rotation but I am not fond of having to toggle the volume up and down like on my older phones.

I'm right with ya..never use Landscape unless I'm taking a photo or watching a quick YouTube clip.

I know I am in the vast minority but I am just not a fan of these over sized smart phones . I have sworn at my iPhone a few times but being too small was never a reason

Yeah definitely. Especially after all of Jony Ives descriptions of how things are actually done at Apple.

A square screen can only be designed so many ways. Sure a few things here or there will be in new locations or look different but in essence it's the same design. At a certain point it will be as thin and trim as is possible. With the antenna around the outside the phone packs as much as it can inside. Hell, the middle plate is gone in this version saving that precious 0.02mm of space?

Sure there are plenty of people who can PS a great design but they don't have to try and bring that design to market with the same level of expectation.

How exactly is the SIII an incredibly innovative design compared to the SII?

It's not, but I don't have the s2. Those that do probably didn't think it was worth the upgrade, but coming from the 4 to 4s which was identical....to move to the 5 that pretty much looks identical just longer....meh!!

I really don't think people realize how minuscule a .5 inch change is.

It's good for those who are happy with the current iPhone screen, but it'll be virtually irrelevant to those who are wishing for larger.

I don't think Apple is screwed as the article indicates. I do think some people will be disappointed. I had a iPhone 3G but I got the Samsung S2 LTE Skyrocket for the larger screen, widgets and being able to do more with the phone in terms of customization.

However I do have some complaints. My phone is outside of Apple's ecosystem which is more of a pain than a problem for me in terms of my music. An app called double twist has made it a lot easier but its still not as convenient as having the iTunes store on my phone. The other issue is with software updates. Apple is fantastic with this. With Android, excluding the Nexus, we have to wait until the carrier we are on releases it which can be 6 months or longer after Google has released the OS. By that time Google is preparing its next OS release!

I'm not due for a new upgrade until next year around the time when the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s would be shipping. Hopefully by then Apple has a radical design change from the iPhone 4. Also iOS in my opinion needs some serious UI changes. I got bored of the rows of app icons on iOS. Android isn't perfect by any means but it does give the consumer a choice. I'm not sure if I will go back to the iPhone next year or not but if it were this year I would not get the iPhone 5 based on what has been 'leaked'.

The Rumors are for the 4GS, they are also introducing iPhone 6 with iOS 6. Upgraded slicker version with better battery and LTE.

Apple won't be screwed no matter what they release. They might make immense profits that don't break their past records, but as long as it has iOS and moderate bumps in features/design, they will sell millions. If you seriously think that design would screw them, you have a lot to learn.

They could sell the crappiest phone ever. They could sell one made out of pudding and I'll still buy it.

Competition Benefits All

I don't think Apple is screwed, they've got too many followers to have this rather mundane new iPhone make much difference either way.

And _that_ is the problem.

While it may very well sell in record numbers, like the iPhones that came before it, the fact is there are rumblings of discontent out there right now, that were not there, just two revisions ago....

This is a very risky time for Apple. It may not appear like that to many, but users are smart, and not eager to put up with the same old phone (in terms of styling) year after year.

How the public receives this new iPhone promises to be interesting.

It may reveal a chink in Apple's armor, or it may not.

Only time will tell.

Both valid points. However, I think what most on these forums fail to realize, is that competition is a good thing, a very good thing for the consumer. While I'm a huge Apple fan, I want other tablets to be successful b/c Apple has enough money in the bank, and the more competition they have, the more they innovate and push themselves.

I'm not going to prophesy gloomy and doom, and I'm not going to wish that Apple runs evryone out of business; I just want great "stuff" when I lay down my hard-earned cash.

oh, so you're saying that a company should completely abandon brand/product recognition? make something that completely doesn't look like an iPhone, so people have no idea that you have the new iPhone, so instead they have to spend millions on marketing to make people aware "no no, that's still an iPhone... it's just a different iPhone." rather than making something that people will recognize, the people who "know" will notice it's different, the people that don't will find out about it through friends that do / sales staff @ AT&T or whatever, Apple keeps customers it has, and doesn't have to market the hell out of the ones it doesn't have yet. because the device is recognizable.

you're clearly not in the business of selling products, or if you are you're probably not very good at it..

but nonetheless, if your interest is in flashy drastic changes and changing a familiar UI to something unfamiliar so that people have to re-learn it (there are people that don't just "get it", but MOST people that pick up an iPhone for the first time have -zero- learning curve) i'd say yeah, switch away.. and don't let the door hit you on the way out. you'll be upset once you realize how ****** android still is (buggy, fragmented, unstable, insecure) but hey, at least its flashy!! my windows phone (lumia 900) is the same way - UI is nice sure, but there are a total of 10 useful apps in the windows marketplace. there are more in the android market (i love my rooted kindle fire running 4.1.1) but im not about to re-invest 100s of dollars into android apps when i've already bought the iOS version.

And I agree.

I will switch to Android/ Samsung if this is the next iPhone. It looks really dated/ old and small now and i'm getting tired of the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and possibly iPhone 5 looking all the same. No thanks.

iOS6 looks old too. How come Apple isn't doing more innovation? Still the fixed icon grid while Google + even Microsoft have done more cool stuff in the mobile front.

yup. at least he's consistent, he's hoping for the one day that he's right.

Oh please, a Henry Blodget link? That dude is nothing more than a fraudulent jackass with an insatiable desire to be call "First!" for Apple's doom & gloom. He's done it over & over again.

P.S. He also finished second, only to Mike Daisey, for The Macalope's "Fools of the Year" Award.

These new phones with Jelly Bean are very very impressive. Galaxy S3, HTC one X are the benchmarks right now. Even Windows phone is catching up. yeah all phones are on par with each other spec wise but if that the driver for buying your phones then thats a shame

The iphone and ipad changed the game, but now everyone has caught up and surpassed them. what? who has surpassed the iPad? lol the 4S may have been surpassed but its quite old now in tech terms

Yep. Agreed. It's a shame Apple no long turns a profit. And I am sure their suppliers are probably looking elsewhere for customers to take up the slack.

I think Apple knows the market they are after. I prefer some of the designs I have seen from Samsung and htc. However, I much prefer the functionality and interface of my current 4s. I'll probably upgrade to get LTE. Anything else is just gravy, for me.

Yes, Apple is laughing all the way to the bank.

What you find funny, I find amazing. Apple doesn't just have customers, they have fans. That's an emotional connection that most businesses envy and few achieve. Whether it's build quality, form, function, or a combination of all those elements, there's a sizable part of Apple's customer base that experience a sense of delight when discovering a new Apple product for the first time.

Point is, whether you approve or not, Apple builds things that many people love, not just like. My hat's off to them - I think it's incredibly hard to do that.

Apple isn't going to be screwed at all with whatever design they put out. I do think all the mock ups that have come out are plausible designs of what it might look like however I think they'll come up with something different. All the mock ups we've seen look like the iPhone 4/4s because it's easy to render those pictures. Either way I'm not worried about the design of the new iPhone just a few minor upgrades (RAM and speed) and a larger screen would sell me on it.

I just want great "stuff" when I lay down my hard-earned cash.
Precisely!

I know what Apple is capable of, I've been a loyal, happy customer for years.

The best thing that ever happened to them in the mobile space is Android. Just the kick in the pants they need to stay on their game.

If true, and we only get an elongated narrow iPhone as the next model, it will be very interesting to see the overall response of the buyers.

On one hand they may accept it as they do all things Apple and allow Apple to coast. On the other hand some may actually push back and complain or migrate to Android to obtain the large, spacious display that truly enhances the smartphone experience.

The 4.8" display on my SGS III is so much nicer to use when one is composing messages and emails, as well as surfing or working on the web. It's a truly great advantage that one can only imagine until you experience it.

Even if Apple went to a 4.65" display that would be enough to keep me extremely happy. Although I've been using both Androids and iPhones over the last several years, my first preference is an iPhone if only it had a modern sized display.

As it stands now, it appears that we're only going to get this 4.0" rather odd looking stretched out display. Due to it's narrow width, there's no improvement in the landscape position which is the way I use it for emails. Therefore this is an iPhone I have no problem ignoring. I'm not about to give my cash to Apple for this rather warmed over model.

It will be the first time in the history of the iPhone, that I don't buy the newest model. Rather sad really, yet I just cannot support Apple's poor choice of milking the same old flat slab rectangular phone with a tiny display.

Oh well, hopefully they won't continue to milk the same old thing next year.

The Rumors are for the 4GS, they are also introducing iPhone 6 with iOS 6. Upgraded slicker version with better battery and LTE.

If that turns out to be true, that would be great! But I do not see them releasing two phones with different resolutions and such. We shall see.

That is very true. It is amazing that Apple has the following and the loyalty that they do. I am glad to say I am one of them. For me, it started with my first iPod and Apple Laptop, which led to my many iPhone's and my iPad.

I buy Apple products because I want them, not because of anything else. I tried Android, it just wasn't for me. I use my phone A LOT, but my iPhone does all of the things I want it to do. Also, it is nice that all of my electronics sync together nicely, thats a plus.

That's my point. Fans. Steven Jobs was brilliant and I am very fascinated his creations as a company and also bringing it back to life.

I understand why people love apple products and find it suited for them, especially in a apple enthusiast forum, but its ok. But there are tremendous amount of people who buy them for status, image, or everyone else has one.

They have very clever marketing and they are definitely laughing to the bank, with all the money they made off us.

There is definitely two crowds here, Apple fans and tech fans

I don't discriminate on any company. I appreciate a good product.
