You would think that it would be worth it for AT&T to allow 3G users the upgrade price. In another year there will be more phones and even the potential of iPhone on Verizon. It would be worth it for AT&T to lock current 3G users in for another year if they could. Just up the ETF and call it a day.

Many 3G users who don't qualify for upgrade pricing until 1/10-3/10 will wait for the 6/10 announcement of the new iPhone and if that means a new carrier (or Palm Pre 2.0, BB Bold next etc) AT&T could be losing a lot more by not keeping their claws around current iPhone users.

Lock the 3G users in until 7/2011 and improve the network and AT&T would end up much better off.

if you have a family plan with at&t you can add a line for a nominal fee ($9.99 per month), pay for the iphone on that line at the lower price, swap sim cards and add the data plan to your old line. The in-store rep gave my wife this advise in March when she got her iphone and was not upgrade eligible.

Why the hell will you add the extra line if you aren't going to use it??? You just said you had one line and now your wife has the second. Who will the Thor line go to? If you have kids then I can understand buy if your just adding the extra line for the heck of it then what's the point? Your just adding into the bill.

honestly it makes sense, cause the new iphone isn't really an upgrade! its the same freakin phone! just video and compass!

Faster processor
2x the ram
2x the storage

voice control
3mp camera

Sucks that we're being frozen out. I'm not eligible until 12/31/09. Happy frigging new year.

I just got off the phone with AT&T and I Found out that my fiancée black berry is eligable for an early upgrade for the 3gs, so I asked if I can just use the phone with my number and AT&T said yes, the only thing is thaty fiancée will have an extra 2 yes on her but she won't mind, she's happy with her black berry. So people with family make make a deal with your family memeber and see if they will upgrade and give you the phone (make sure all of you don't have iPhones!)

Logical, however my understanding is that in many cases this might be more trouble than it is worth. As I understanding it, the upgrading line will also, in order to be valid for the iPhone, need a $30 data plan. Now, if you already have a data plan, the cost won't be that much. If you do not, however, it would be cheaper to buy the phone unsubsidized ($699 for the 32GB unsub as opposed to $299 phone upgrade + $720 data). I could be wrong, but that is how I understand it.

Unless they let you slide if you have the iPhone 3G data plan on the main line....

I was told by the AT&T rep that my fiancée will just have an additional 2 yrs and that since my iPhone is the main line my fiancée won't be bothered with an extra 30 for a non iPhone since she will be using her BB.

When I go to www.apple.com, and click on "Buy iPhone," it asks for my mobile number and info, and then it gives me a quote. I bought my iPhone3G in August2008, and my price is $399, or it says I can wait until January and get a "discounted" price.

Brilliant point. From AT&T's standpoint, AT&T should be doing everything they can to extend those contracts. Heck, they should be giving away free iPhones3G-S for a 3-year contract. I would never do it, but AT&T investors would love the idea.

I cant seem to figure this out-

I bought the 3G on Launch day, my upgrade is for 12/12

Why Do i have the 599/699 prices when others have the same situation and 399/499 Prices?

Can anyone help me out here?

This is what I get I bought the First Gen Iphone a month after it was out and then got the 3G on the first day. Looks like I only have to wait about 1 month.

As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 07/12/2009.

* $299.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
* $399.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
* $499.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

Why am I not getting the valued customer prices? I am going to call them tomorrow and threaten to cancel my account if I do not receive the 499 price.

I have a somewhat complicated question that is open for people smarter than me at this stuff.

I have an iPhone 3G that I bought on launch last year. In January, my family switched to a family plan. My iPhone 3G had it's data turned off using something called "Wixblock", so that I could still have calling and texting abilities that were included in the family plan, but no data. Now how would someone in my position go about selling my current iphone 3G, and getting a new iPhone 3GS without getting screwed for $399 (iPhone 3GS 16g)?

-I Have: iPhone 3G, 8gig, wix block active
-I Want: iPhone 3GS, 16gig

Well I'm glad I bought the 3G on the first day. I only have to wait a month.

No, it's not brilliant.
If at&t give the 3 years then how about next year? Extend for another 2 to get 5 years and so on?
Yeah doubt it.

Well, I have two lines on my family plan. The 4/30 is the iPhone line, but I'll be using the 9/30 for my 199/299 upgrade. :)

With all respect, that does not make sense. The iPhone3G was subsidized down to $199 from about $599. By charging users $69.99 per month instead of the previous iPhone's $59.99 per month, over 24 months, AT&T would get back the $240 plus the remaining amount subsidized for the phone. If you don't have a data plan and you only pay for voice, then AT&T would not be able to pay for your phone. What you say does not make sense. A $69.99 per month 24-month plan contract was mandatory for the iPhone3G.

I want to know what the friggin difference is...

We can offer you an iPhone at the full retail price. On 12/15/2009, you may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade.

* $499.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
* $599.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
* $699.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

This is going through the apple store...selecting the iphone 3GS and hitting Get Started...

I was with AT&T last year using a Cingular 2125 (HTC 2125)...upgrade eligibility date was 10/15/2008. I paid full price at the time (early upgrade price) for my iPhone 3G ($499).

I've been doing $80/mo with no texting. (my guess is that this is the reason, not spending enough)

Now they tell me I gotta pay full price...no subsidy at all...even though I'm about as loyal as an AT&T customer can get.

At this price (I want the 32GB so $699)...there's no way in hell I'm getting it until December (I refuse to...I fully expect to be able to sometime this summer). I would buy it if I could get the same pricing as last year...even though I feel I deserve to get the full subsidized pricing this year.

Before the 2125 was an MPX220 (Cingular)...and before that a MPX200 (AT&T)...I don't remember what was before that but it was on AT&T. Rewards for customer loyalty my ass...

and my understanding is...the $699 price is still with a contract...making the no contract cost even higher than $699. My guess is somewhere closer to $900-1000 to live free of a contract.

You should call AT&T and find out the specifics. This does not make sense. If you paid full price for your 3G, then AT&T did not have to subsidize it, and you should be eligible for a new phone. You need to call AT&T's 1-800 number, ask for the supervisor and argue your point.

I am eligible for the 399/16G and the 499/32G upgrade options.

I am really tempted to grab the 400 dollar 16 gig as it is plenty for me now.

It is either that, or wait until August 12th to get it at the fully discounted price... I do not know if I have that kind of patience.

A new line on my family's plan was only $10 a month. The texting for the rest of my family cost additional. My family enacted wix block which allowed me to keep the calling and texting already on my family's plan, but stop the 3g data that would cost the $30 a month

Well nevermind, I'm going to get the $399 16GB next month. I don't feel like waiting until 9/30 to get it at the discounted price of 199/299. I'm w/o the iPhone now, since I sold it on eBay.

If you are seeing the $599 / $699 pricing then you are not receiving any discount as this is the "No commitment" pricing based on this link from AT&T

http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=1574#tab4

Without out more information on your specific account and features it would be hard to guess as to why you don't see a discount to the $399 / $499 "Early Upgrade" pricing. What do you mean by your 12/12 upgrade date? If you purchased the the iPhone 3G last July 11, then the longest date for a discounted upgrade should be 7/11/2008 + 21 months, which would put you into the 2010 timeframe.

Hmmm.... You just said that you paid full price for the 3G, then in the exact same sentence you said it was an early upgrade. Let me see here, you UPGRADED EARLY is why you are not eligible now. The retail price of the iPhone 3G is $699 - not $499, the same as the non upgrade eligible price of the 3GS.

He probably means 12/12/09 which is appropriate for the date he got his 3G.

Here's my question...

My wife and I are on a family plan. I have a 3G purchased on launch day '08. She has a 2G purchased on launch day '07. For some reason, my upgrade date is 3/12/2010. She is eligible to upgrade now. She doesn't want the new iPhone, but of course I do. Can I buy a 3GS, pretend it's for her so we get the lower price, then just later swap the SIM cards? Is there any down side to doing this?

Thanks!
