In other words Apple should have not used quality (pricy) plastic material and top notch reinforcement technics, but to keep price down make the 5C with low grade stuff (cheap) plastic material so that the phone can compete with myrids of other cheap plastic flexy creeky stuff out there so that the phone can come in at around $59.95 on contract and $1-200 off contract. Ahhh ok I get it. Even i know that Apple is not that kinda of company...At least not right now.
Apple has to turn around their declining global market share. The US/European markets are mature and offer no growth (actually they are slipping there as well). They need to grow in China; but they missed the mark with the high priced 5C. Apple is stuck using the iPhone profits to make up for the significant drop in sales of the PC/Laptop products; which have been their cash cows (and major source of high margin) for years.

Finally a maningful thread, I'm happy with the new devices that apple show and I don't know whats the point of weeping about that you don't like them, the S model is always the same design and the 5C is really nice for people who want to have ios phone for cheap. :)

I guess the consumer should just shut up and take whatever options they're given and not voice their wants/needs/concerns?

Thats not what he's saying, to constantly complain about what apple did wrong instead of what they did right. We knew we weren't getting a bigger display, yet, some still were mad that one wasn't announced. They think apple is just some big bad wolf that wants to choose what we can and can't have. When it's ready we will have it. If you can't wait there are other great alternatives. But you have to admit when apple does something that is already done. They do it great, the fingerprint scanner is a pretty awesome piece of tech, when they did the iPad mini, it's a great product. When they released the original iPhone it was revolutionary. Just sit back relax, and enjoy what we do have instead of what you don't.

 plastic or metal, the total packaging won't exceed $20 bucks, some cheap mass manufactured aluminum alloy or polycarbonate resin totally matters on a $700-900 dollar phone right?

I hold it the same way I hold my iPhone.

And yes, its the actual display I touch.

Here's a photo of how I hold the phone and when I reach across the display - my palm ends up slightly touching the screen and causes whatever I'm pressing with my thumb, not to register.

It's the way you hold it. I think you are gripping your S4 too firmly. Try placing your right pinky under the bottom of your device. That's how I hold mine, without gripping hard at all, and I never accidentally hit my screen.

So.....

I'm holding it wrong? :p

I would be happy to just get my original 5 battery life back in iOS 7. That seems to be too much to ask for.

The iPhone 5S brings three new features:

  1. 64-bit A7 processor
  2. Multi-color flash
  3. Real biometric security

All three of these points are a first in the cellphone industry. How is this not innovative? Sure we'd all like to see more memory and a larger screen as an option or as a permanent feature, but those would certainly not be innovative features.

I second this. Although granted, a fingerprint scanner has been done before, Apple wouldn't have included it in the iPhone if they weren't confident that it's reliable enough for the average user to make use of it. If something doesn't work well, the mass market turn it off and move on with their lives. Case in point, Air Gestures. It's easier to just tap and select the words you want on the screen than hold your finger over it and wait for the phone to do it for you. Granted, it's meant for people wearing gloves, but it's not that much of a pet hate just yet. Plus, you can buy capacitive gloves for £15 these days, compared to the Galaxy S4 which costs £550.

Moving to 64-bit is a foundation thing, it lays the groundwork for the future when applications will require that extra performance. We sure as hell wouldn't have games the visual quality of Crysis 3 if Windows was still running 32-bit all round. And the camera improvements? Well let's just say a 16Megapixel professional camera walks all over Nokia's 41Megapixel pureview, simply because the hardware features like aperture are vastly superior and make more of a difference to the image quality than sheer megapixel quantity.

This culture of "innovation" is a facade. Companies like Samsung have preached that features like Air gestures are innovative, and actually they almost are, except innovation is more than making something new, it's making something that works so reliably that you use it without thinking about it. Think of when broadband moved from dial up which required us to manually log in every single session to being always-on providing the modem is powered up.

The real difference here is that Apple doesn't feel like it has to compete with everyone else's ideas, they move at their own pace, while everyone else seems to be rushing out potentially brilliant features just to beat Apple to the punch. It's a shame that a lot of people believe banging out a dozen ideas that barely work or work "okay", is better than pushing two or three that work flawlessly.

they missed the mark? They hit a home run! Apple makes premium products when are you guys going to get that.

Could not agree more.

People fall into Samsung trap of comparing useless specs and highlight useless gimmicks that noone uses.

All those "cool" features are turned off within a week of using the phone. I know people who own S4 and turned that off after a week of excitement as they drain battery like crazy and cause the phone to exert more heat.

Apple focuses on useful feature, avoiding releasing something that little to no value to customer.

Samsung is a "jack of all trades, master of none type" They toss in 1,000's of half baked features that you might use. Apple limits the features to things that are useful and then tries to perfect them. Neither one is necessarily "wrong" but I myself prefer useful and perfected over half baked and useless most the time.

Haha. Yes.

It's an absent minded thing for me.....I pick up my phone, hold it the way I showed and get frustrated when my palm hits the screen. Then I shift my hand and work away, even one-handed.....

Not saying it was impossible. Just in my natural grip on my phone (which is used to holding an iPhone - even after having owned Android phones for a while).

Agreed. If you don't like it, shut the f up and go buy an android and have fun with that. I had plenty of android phones and they are full of errors.

Leave. Nobody cares. Wah wah wah. Bye! I'm getting 5s and I'm gonna love it!

It's hard to be disappointed when your expectations weren't that high to begin with. The 'S' iterations of the iPhone have never been major steps forward. Why anyone would expect that at this point is puzzling. The 4, the 5, and most likely the 6 will be where the design changes and such occur.

The 'love it or leave it' attitude that some express here is a bit disturbing though. This forum has always been a good place to discuss things with people with varying opinions on Apple and its products & services.

It's natural that holding a larger phone might require a different method of handling it. It appears you are handling the S4 as if it was an old iPhone, and hence your issue.

I'm coming from an iPhone 5. It was pretty natural to adjust my handling of the S4 so it worked for me early on.

I know this is common place - I hope all those who are crying about being disappointed realize they are part of a group who complains each year about the iPhone release - and in doing so, look like a fool.

Let me explain a little something about the iPhone and Apple.

Apple, is first and foremost, an expert in REFINEMENT, not INNOVATION. The main goal each year for Apple is to release a smartphone with features that WORK as close to 100% of the time as is possible in tech, and are USEFUL.

There is a great distinction to be made here. USEFUL over GIMMICK.

Now the word GIMMICK gets thrown around a lot when talking about Samsung or the fingerprint sensor, and really I think it's overused. BUT, when describing features that are cool and "futuristic" but aren't very reliable or terribly useful, I think the word GIMMICK makes sense.

Apple is not in the business of releasing GIMMICKS. Now, many who are upset, are upset because they want a bigger screen. And instead of rationally voicing this desire, they kick and whine about how Apple is doomed.

A few things about the larger screen.

(1) It's nice. I like it as a whole on my GS4.
(2) It's not all roses and unicorns - a larger screen SHOULD have software to adjust for accidental palm touches. The GS4 doesn't (nor does the HTC One) and in both instances, using the phone one-handed is a pain. Mind you, I can fit my hand around the phone just fine.....but when reaching across, my palm ALWAYS touches the edge and negates any taps my finger makes.
(3) Apple WILL release a larger screened iPhone. See #2 as a possible reason why they haven't yet.

If you look at what Apple presented in the 5S - improved camera, 64-bit processor, fingerprint sensor - they gave iPhone owners 2 things that are EXTREMELY USEFUL. The camera features mentioned look to make taking photos on the iPhone easier than ever and all the software and hardware that went into it will produce better pictures across the board. This being a main use of a smartphone for ME (and I assume, for many), I'm extremely excited to be able to take BETTER pictures in pretty much ANY situation. And I know people mock the fingerprint sensor as a GIMMICK - but (1) it works flawlessly from initial hands-ons and (2) I unlock my iPhone and enter my appleID password dozens of times a day. Being able to simply tap the home button instead of typing AND having the simple tap be more secure than the password (remember, your fingerprint will be stored on the A7 itself and NEVER backed up and NEVER synced to Apple's servers), I find this HUGELY convenient and USEFUL.

As for the 64-bit processor - it's hilarious that many of you who are berating Apple for "more of the same", consistently praise other Android OEMs for forward thinking features like Smart Stay.

The 64-bit processor is coming to mobile. It would've been whether Apple released it or not, and with this release they are actually AHEAD of the game....

Yet, people ask "What's the point?", and say "the iPhone was already fast enough."

The implications of moving smartphones to a 64-bit architecture are actually quite substantial. MORE graphics intensive games, more power applications. And Apple happens to do this FIRST, yet gets even MORE hate for it.

Anyways - hopefully this was somewhat informative. The 5S is actually a great upgrade in my opinion. I look forward to picking mine up on the 20th.

Thank you for posting this. The whining was getting slightly annoying.

This S iteration actually exceeded my expectations. 64-bit that's huge and no one was expecting it. A fingerprint sensor done correctly That's huge. Some may have attempted a fingerprint sensor but they did not succeed Not even close. A unibody polycarbonate design it's just plastic done correctly. I wouldn't expect too much from a design change what are you going to make it the shape of a football Or a circle?

Agree OP. The complaining on here is out of control. Apple is damned if they do and damned if the don't.

For heavens sake if your unhappy LEAVE and don't come back.

If Apple released a 8 core "snapdragon" processor people would complain its not 12 cores.

This x100.

Honestly, some posters here act worse than BlackBerry fanboys. If you think Apple can do no wrong, then you are wrong. Corporations are not always correct. Lets clear up two items:

1. Everyone has a right to think for themselves and have their own opinion. If someone likes or does not like the new iPhones that is their right. No one has a right to say a person is wrong for thinking a certain way. Get off your high horse.

2. If you think Apple is a 'god' and can do no wrong, well that's how users of BlackBerry felt. I know because I used BlackBerry for years. But, once I realized they were not changing for the better I left their products and services. Even a great company like Apple will screw up. Some people here act like Apple can do no wrong, sorry to tell you this but yes they can - everyone can.

+1

Everybody knew what we were getting for WEEKS!

I am not upset with the upgrade, it is exactly what I expected.

The 5C believe it or not is a good option. You have no idea how many people will look at the 2 models and say I want to save $100 and get a cool color. I am not one of them, but there are plenty of those people out there that will buy.

Yes, they are innovative but are they needed and useful?

1. SIRI was "innovative", how much do iPhone users use SIRI?

2. Faster phone. So what. The iPhone 5 is fast enough (it's a phone not a laptop computer).

3. Better camera. Sure, the camera is better. But, is it really worth a full phone upgrade? The iPhone 5 camera is fine and one of the best on the market right now. Plus, most people don't print the photos from their phones. The photos are used for online display. I'm a photographer and I don't use my iPhone for fancy photos, it's just to take snapshots.

4. The scanner is nice and an interesting feature. But, it's just a nice to have feature. Don't forget no apps will have access to the scanner.

Bottom line is users have a right to like or dislike the new iPhone. It's called a free market. If you don't like free speech don't read the internet.

How was it a solid jump? I feel bad for folks going from the 5 to 5s what a joke this upgrade is. I don't even want to get started on the gold plated bling? I guess it is par for the course for apple nowadays

Rofl

You shouldnt be buying a phone every year, the reason why its not a huge upgrade from the 5 is because its the 5S. The bigger updates always coming every two days. From the 5 to the 6.

I am going from a 4S to a 5S and its a big leap for someone like me. And its even bigger if someone as on a 4 or 3GS
