The next engineering marvel of the world

After seeing the dissection, all I have to say is, WOW!

Apple packed everything so tight in the iPhone 5 that all previous versions of the iPhone seem spacious inside. The logic board alone looks like it barely has the room to breath!

I love the Karateka screengrab in your profile!
Reminds me of the first day I got to use the Apple IIc

Thanks!

We had an Apple II at my primary school, but we didn't have Karateka. My avatar is actually from International Karate + on the Commodore 64 (which was the first computer I ever owned). Screenshots look very similar though!

The linear-oscillating vibrator is "quieter and less annoying" and iFixit is "scratching our heads as to why" Apple reverted to the less elegant design.

That's what she said.

I'm actually incredibly discouraged that it only went up 2 mAh.

Seriously?!? 2?!

I'm HOPING they found some way to make that terrible ~1430 mAh last longer but I'm sick and tired of Apple focusing so much on thinness and not enough on battery life. My wife's 4S is absolutely horrible. Can't make it until 3-4 PM most days. (And yes, I've tried everything possible.)

I'm going to stay optimistic because reviews seemed to suggest battery life is OK on i5 but I'm definitely skeptical.

The A6 requires less power also the've combined all the previous cell radio chips into one chip also requiring less power. It will definately last longer.

Oh my god....

iFixIt discovered that the Iphone changed it's VIBRATIONS OSCILLATOR ! How am I ever going to live......

....Hey FEDex guy....screw this....I'll refuse delivery tomorrow ! I want the "new" old oscillator back.

Is the battery physically bigger in volume than the 4S battery?

----------

iFixit? I don't think that iPhone 5 is ever going to function again.

----------

Correct :) I actually very much enjoy the circuitry porn aspect of it. Just think it's silly to blast a product for something where the percentage of people affected is astonishingly small, probably about the same number of people who would answer "yes" to "Have you used your own soldering iron in the last month?"

But I wish the RAM was upgradeable. The soldered-on RAM is the only thing overboard about the MBPR's non-user-serviceability. Then again, those people will be all prepared with their soldering irons :D

The only things I ever modify on a Mac are the RAM and the Apple logo color.

Dang, I liked the new vibrator on the 4S. It was much quieter and nicer.

If I remember correctly, the Verizon iPhone 4 was the first to implement the linear-oscillating vibrator cause I remember being able to tell apart a Verizon iPhone 4 from an AT&T iPhone 4 just based on the vibrate. :nerd:

It's Vibratorgate! The sexiest Apple scandal yet!

Why are you so worked up about what kind of a vibration motor it has?
Centainly no reason to refuse delivery. At least keep it and sell it on Ebay or Craigslist.

How come the rate of understanding sarcasm on MacRumors is like 40%?

Thanks!

WOAH that's really weird.
Vic20 was my first PC, and primary school was with Karateka. The other engineers that worked with my Dad for American Airlines (back in the good ol days) always had his my kid is cooler than yours thing going on. Since the other dad lost a bet ... a months salary and software was the winnings for pops. (I'm unsure what he lost over those few years; but it didn't seem it happened often)

Telling the teacher a simple cut on the otherside made a 5 1/4" floppy double-sided was bliss (being 8). The look on all the other kids I was afraid of and the teacher when colour game loaded with 4 sounds simultaneously = Priceless.

So, lets get this straight....

iFixit flew half way round the world just to visit an Apple Store here in Australia. ?

They did know the iPhone 5 was available in UK at the same time right?

Well if your flying half way around the world to camp out on a street I know which one I'd pick given the choice.

Agreed

Even still, it seems with every new iPhone, that the battery barely changes capacity. Obviously, as you said, Apple typically makes other hardware and/or software improvements to increase battery life, but I am always thinking seriously... couldn't those engineering geniuses at Apple have somehow fit a slightly higher capacity battery in there. I always wonder how/why they decide what batteries to go with. Like maybe they want charging time to stay the same? There have been 3rd party batteries with higher capacities available for every iPhone, of which I am sure many are not the same quality, but this just seems like something Apple is at least to some extent, doing on purpose, and not just because the technology is limited.

I'll save you all some time. Shockingly, it's not very user-repairable. Screw you, iFixIt, no one cares.

It's more repairable than any other iPhone.

With the 3G/3GS you had to rip everything out to get to the battery. The 4/4S you had to rip everything out to get to the LCD/Digitizer. This one the screen is first, the battery is second. Very nice for guys like me who do the occasional home repair :D

"Based on a user request, we looked into the concerns about "Scuff Gate," the fear that the black coating scuffs off too easily."
"We found that the side is pretty tough, but the chamfered edge can be susceptible to scuffing, making for a shiny streak on the side."
"Moral of this story: be careful, or get a case."

So when I had the 4, I had to use a case. Now with the 5, it looks like I will have to use a case.... again. I guess the s model iPhone's are the way to go

Which is the very reason I opted for the white because the sides are bare and there isn't anything to rub off.

Seriously?!?

Here's a rather clear case of hardware specs not mattering. I couldn't care less about the battery capacity as measure in mAh. I DO care about battery life. Real world.

If Apple is able to squeeze the same or more life out of the same capacity battery - good.
