hahaha, we have that lamp for 2 years now at the office for our samsung co-workers. every time some apple executive said nobody needed wireless charging we laughed.

welcome to 2014.

I had my first wireless charging phone in 2011, you were even later to that game than Apple is to yours.

Oh, and wireless charging was practically useless to me...it wasn't prolific enough to use anywhere that I didn't carry all the usual gear PLUS a charging plate. That's about to change.

nop, that got implemented from the start as a standard by the entire industry. Nobody put their head in the ground and pretended it was not a good idea.

You know, you need to take a close look at the first responses to the iPhone. No other companies even caught up to using glass for at least a couple of years. Samsung dropped the Omnia II as its flagship TWO years after the iPhone, still with resistive touch. They tried very hard to market it like an iPhone though.

Many companies insisted that a QWERTY keyboard was still necessary as well.

Inductive charging can be a nice option but it's nowhere near a necessity.

Apple is very clever in 'leaving them wanting more' with all their devices.

That, my friend, is why they will NEVER be first to the party (again).

You mean, like first to the party with payment processing that everyone copied just a couple of years ago? Or, like, first to the party with actual secure biometric face scanning? People really like to pick and choose when it comes to Apple innovations to fit their views.

This is for those who underestimate Apple's marketing pull.

Qi charging has existed for years (it's built into my Note5!) but now that Apple puts a phone out with it built in, then people take notice.

Amazing.
You do realise that these are not new products "inspired" by Apple "innovation".

Looks like there having a sly dig at Apple users knowing Apple users have longed for wireless charging and they will now come rushing in to buy these products that Apple made possible.

Don’t be daft! It’s not that they take or don’t take a notice. It is because iPhone is extremely popular. Nothing takes totally off until it has been implemented on the iPhone but of course you know that.

ikea.com indicates 5W charge power on these. I wonder how long that would take to fully charge a 8+ or X. Are there any published charge times for the new phones somewhere? Certainly the charge time should vary by the mode the phone is in; e.g. DND, airplane mode, off (?), displaying notifications, etc.

Personally, I think it's time companies start more campaigns like this. Apple takes themselves WAYYY to seriously.

And to those who post, "Qi charging has been out for years, it's only when apple does people take it seriously..." Well, yeah, apple has a HUGE market in the US (not such a presence in other parts of the world) and that does mean something. Apple also knows, though, with large market share comes commonality.

Touche', somewhat.

I'm not really downing Apple here, when they innovate they innovate. But the tech you mention already existed, just like the iPod, multitouch, NFC, Qi Charging, etc. Thus Apple is never first to the party (anymore, at least post-Jobs).

That said, usually they're fashionably late, implementing features in unique and often excellent ways, like FaceID. Whether it works as advertised remains to be seen, but the limitations are already visible despite the clearly innovative tech behind it...

However, Apple always, always leaves something obvious out for the next iteration. Like the iPad not having a front camera until iPad 2, the watch not being waterproof like the watch2, or having call ability like the watch3, etc etc.

I’m not sure I understand Apple customers who also buy IKEA. They are willing to buy the most premium electronics and the absolute least premium furniture. IKEA has some clever designs but the quality is pathetic.

By 'people noticing' I meant 'marketing people'. Which is why I made the reference to Apple's marketing pull. Don't be daft, yourself.

I attribute Apple's delay in adopting the Qi standard to a hope they probably had that they could do better. In the end they gave up. They decided whatever they were working on may as well be incorporated into the Qi standard. It is better for everybody that Apple's technology isn't proprietary. Apple don't put out proprietary new standards for the sake of it. They do it if they believe what they have is significantly better than what is on the market. In this case, they obviously didn't.

  • Nobody wants to rent music.
  • Nobody wants to watch videos on a small screen.
  • Nobody wants a phone where your fingers can't reach across the screen while holding it (with that same hand).

Innovation is what I look for from Apple, not necessarily invention. I'm definitely on top of technology enough to know what exists before Apple gets it, most of the time I own the technology in other devices first anyway. However, I also watch a lot of tech come and go and I see why Apple waits it out first.

The first watch was "waterproof" though, Tim Cook talked about how he showered with it at launch. They just weren't going the full mile with water ejection and certification. I'm still not convinced around LTE in a watch, I'm trading up my series 2 for a series 3 but only because I want to downgrade from SS to aluminum and if I do end up getting that airpower pad thing I'd like it to be able to charge. But, I have become accustomed to how the watch works and I never really find a need for LTE since it works over wifi without the phone - which is usually only not tethered while it's being swapped for a new iPhone or updating the OS. We'll see how it works for me but I see it as an unneeded battery drain that I don't want to actually use. Oh, and the red dot is stupid.

Despite all of that, I do agree that they purposefully leave a feature out of things...and this time around it's USB Type C.

Apple, late to the party, but you fanatics spin it as First Coming Of iChrist because it was finally implemented by Apple. Hypocrisy living in Apple & its users duly noted.

First of all, it's not hypocrisy. Second, who the hell is praising it?

That's my guess too, they wanted to do it better. And I also believe that in testing they ran into the problems I've had with inductive charging in phones in the past - burned out charging plates and phones. Possibly why it only charges at half speed.

Seriously?? I personally don't rent it, but c'mon.
  • Nobody wants to watch videos on a small screen.
Seriously?!?!? You must be even older than I am, 'cause YouTube and mobile are inseparable.

SERIOUSLY?? You must have the longest fingers ever, or you are not human...this is the Internet after all. No one knows what anyone is. Every phone requires a different grip than the iPhone 4/5/SE.

They do what they are supposed to do, marketing their products and they do it well. I would not blame them.

Stop defending your beloved, I wasn't attacking neither Apple nor Ikea.

No one is blaming anyone. I simply made an observation regarding Apple's marketing pull and influence.
