Overall happy, but still missing a few things

Overall I'm pretty happy with iLife '05. I'm not thrilled that the price went up but I understand the value that we are still getting for $79.

Positives:
iPhoto-nested folders, improved editing, more (and cheaper) books, cheaper prints (huge!)

iMovie: 16:9 support--Now I can always shoot in 16:9 on my GS400.
Improved performance! Magic iMovie: not sure if I'll use but I may.

iDVD: 16:9 support!!!! Improved preformance! One-step-dvd--I almost bought a set-top DVD recorder to move old VHS tapes to DVD. Now with this feature I can use my MiniDV cam as a bridge, click one button and let it go. Let's hope it works!

Features I was really hoping for:
iMovie/iDVD: surround sound support or at least simulated surround (pro-logic II). We now have HD and 16:9, how cool would it be to be able to add a surround sound mix to your iMovies? The $99 PC packages have this so I guess adding it would increase cost of iLife...

iMovie: New Titling!!! They added LiveType to Express so I guess in a year or two we will have something better in iMovie. The titling today still sucks. I was hoping that they would create Plug-in packs for iMovie (like JamPacks for GB) where if you want somethign extra, you pay more for it...

New app or another iMovie Plug-in: I was hoping for a special effects creation app, like AlamDV or AfterEffects. I purchased Virtix Arsenal to do lightsabers and explosions and Arsenal is great but I was hoping for something from Apple.

If the suite is not complete I say it should not have been released. Who wants to have to toggle between iWorks and Excel? I want a fully integrated office solution like all of Apple's other software and until that time comes I won't be completely happy with iWorks.
The release is part of the larger picture.

i found the iLife family pack in the austrian store for 99€ compared to 79 normal

it got more confusing when i checked the educational store where i found iLife family package for 49€ while the normal package costs 69€
What do you know? There's no link for "family pack" when you look up iLife on the Apple US store, but a search for "ilife family" gives you the family pack price of $99. Excellent!

As before, there is no US family pack EDU pricing.

iWork looks intriguing. It appears on the surface that Apple is making its foray into the Office world like the did with Safari vs Explorer.

It obviously needs a spreadsheet, but I guess that will be coming.

OSX needs something to bind it together like Office does in the "other world." Mac Office 2004 is a great product. I use it for just about everything. The calendar is worlds better than iCal and Mail is just OK. But even then, all the iApps seem like separate entities without any continuity. Since Microsoft isn't doing Office anymore, I don't think Apple will take it over, but rather make their own, which they obviously have the talent to do, and probably do it better in the end.

It's great to see Apple not sit on their iPods and still come out with new and better hardware and software for Apple users.

Go Apple!!!

Anyone know if there's a difference aside from the price for the academic iwork? Just making sure it's not crippled somehow.
same great taste ... less filling.

in other words, it is the exact same thing. just an academic license.

ohh no . . . i haven't even got my BTO Imac G5 yet and they already have a new version of Ilife. i'll have to pay for an upgrade right away . . . hope the store can cut me a deal.

But is this part of iLife '05 or will all iPhoto users get this new lower price. I'm thinking that iPhoto 4 will get the lower price too.

He did allude that it would be available in most countries so I am assuming it would be available in Canada? I heard reports about poor print quality, so if this service were to be valuable to the majority of people, they'll need some QC for them prints.

or, maybe, they don't see the point in making a spreadsheet app because there already is excel which is great in what it does. i mean, come on, how much can you simplify a spreadsheet which is used by those of us who can already think? it's a pro app and apple's spreadsheet app should have to be VERY exceptional to compete with excel.

a regular joe doesn't need a spreadsheet app.

I pretty sure that a lot of "average joe's" would that they don't need a spread sheet. As you noted above, its a fairly simplified program. Is easy to use and very useful for a myriad of uses.
My other comment would be: Why would you buy iWorks AND MS Office just so you can get the Excel? That's a to ask a consumer. Yes there will be some who say that they don't need and will buy iWorks but everyone else would probably go for Office. Long term, I think that Apple is developing a spreadsheet program. It makes more sense to offer a complete pgk. rather than forcing a potential buyer to have to shop for additional programs. THis is the essence of iLife. You don't have to go out and shop around for a photo editor, media player, movie maker, etc. Its all there. iWorks fits nicely in that paradigm wants its all complete.

I cannot get over all of the students on here who say "boo hoo - iLife is too expensive." "$60 is way too much."

So I look at their sig thinking that they are running ancient machinery and lo and behold they have new PBs, dual processor G5s etc etc.

Sorry, but eh?

I have been working for years, can definitely afford iLife even at UK prices without Edu discount but I struggle to justify the kind of metal some of you guys are toting. (And when I was a student? No way?)

Phew, rant over.

I would have that decision to make also. Currently using Excel. Also hoping that Tiger will improve Mail enough that it will work with our Wireless Earthlink system. Hope we don't have to wait another year for the spreadsheet addition.

I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing,

dual G5's and PB's Brought by mummy and daddy maybe?

when i was a kid i wouldnt have been able to afford it either, but then again i dont think it was compatible with my system ( pencil and paper :) )

iWork replacing Appleworks

I think the only reason that iWork hasn't replaced Appleworks for being pre-installed on new consumer macs is that iWork is missing a spreadsheet app. Appleworks already has a passable spreadsheet app.

Once "cells" or whatever it'll be called is finished, iWork will replace Appleworks as preinstalled. Then, it will be like iLife where the upgrades to iWork will cost $$.

IMovie

Does anyone know if IMovie 5 now supports higher resolution pictures. I like to use IMovie to set up slideshows, but I am always disappointed that the resolution of the pictures I import is always so much less than the originals.

Since I never got any response, I'll try posing this question again, if anyone has any opinion on the matter:

One question...Anyone know if this software would be included in Tiger? To those who bought Panther when it came out, was iLife included? If it isn't typical to include iLife with the store bought OS then I will buy iLife next week when it releases...if not, I will wait for Tiger.

To my knowledge, iLife has never shipped with any Mac OS. I've seen others posting that they got iLife with Panther, but it certainly didn't come with my version of Panther. I'm wondering if they are remembering incorrectly: iLife ships with new COMPUTERS, not stand-alone Mac OS products.

It won't be included in Tiger - only on new Mac's.

Does anyone know if iDVD will work with 3rd party drives yet? or if Keynote 2 can add web links?

1. out of the box: apparently not. There might seem to be ways around though...
2. Yes, it can even include live webpages that updates through safari it seems (and other media)

Otherwise: I think the prices are ok. Since the price is now starting to be more than "a few" bucks, I think Apple should consider to also include an upgrade path for the apps. I see both these packages getting regular updates from now on, and it seems a bit tough to cash out $159 (both packages) + a possible OS update at $129 once a year just to stay current... soon one might as well be buying a new Mac mini each year instead :D

Then why release Pages and Keynote as iWorks already if the transition is not complete? iPhoto, iTunes, iDvd, iMovie were not automatically packaged as iLife.
I say they should have just brought out Pages and Keynote separately and wait until the new Excel competitor is released before packaging them as a replacement for Appleworks.

Well, Keynote has already been out there for a while - alone. Noone complained then... so now you get Keynote 2 + Pages for $20 less and NOW people are complaining...
Sorry - some people might find this appealing - as some did for Keynote alone. If you are not one, I think you should be disappointed for yourself, and also feel free to use other available software. As other noted Office 2004 is not that bad - especially Excel. And there is always Open Office for those who wants it free...

iLife has been separate from the OS since they started charging for it, so go order it or buy it on the 22nd. The only iApp in iLife included in Tiger will be iTunes. I think it would be better if they included .mac in the iLife bundle since they both are a yearly purchase now, since its $178 a year to keep both up to date, maybe make the bundle $129.

Next year no one complain if you buy a new computer or iLife in december (nov, oct...) and have to buy the new iLife '06 since you KNOW its going to be released in January! Apple does not have an "upgrade" price for anything other than the major expensive apps (see Final Cut Express.) If you want to wait for Tiger to buy a Mac Mini, thats 6 months away so you probably don't need a(nother) computer now anyway!

I've been to University and had no money, no job, no car, so I got a part-time job to buy "stuff". It is possible to get a 3.5+ gpa and work a little, However the iLife suite isn't something a student really NEEDS, since its more for FUN, and if you can't afford $79($59) then how can you afford digital cameras, digital HD camcorders, DVD/CD media, a music keyboard, or an iPod???

I ordered iLife '05, iWork, an iPod Shuffle 1GB w/dock on my Apple Credit card "With same-as-cash financing for 90 days" which give me enough time to pay it off. I bought an iMac 20" for my birthday October 27. I got a used iPod 15GB the same day as a gift, but its broken until I try to get "best buy" to honor their "warranty" that was purchased with it, does anyone have experience with that? It orginally cost $399 so I don't think its a replacement warranty.

I agree. People will find anything to complain about. It's amazing.

The math is simple, people:

You get an updated application
You get a brand new application
It costs $25 less.

This is a great deal.

Stop the mindless complaining.

The only question, if iDVD 5 also supports burning to an external DVD burner. There's no information about this. Since iDVD 4 already that capability which could be unlocked with an easter egg, I wouldn't be surprised if iDVD could burn directly to external or third part drives.

In his keynote yesterday, Steve said of iDVD, "We're supporting all of the DVD formats now, if you have a drive that supports them." Of course that would imply +R DL as well.

The website does comfirm that using iDVD 05 will enable +R/RW in all currently shipping SuperDrives, including the iMacG5s.

GarageBand - Lock Track - Like Freeze tracks in Logic

I don't know why no one has mentioned this yet, but it is huge, you can now lock tracks in garageband, like you can freeze them in Logic, freeing up huge amounts of ram and cpu! this just made garageband even better! not to mention the multitrack recording. ;)

I'm assuming that Tiger will ship with iLife '04. Looking at my Panther box, some to of the "Key Features" are :

iMovie 3
iPhoto 2
iTunes 4

Looks like they'll include them, but a generation behind. Although my copy of Panther is from the release day, meaning those apps weren't actually made into iLife '04 at the time.

So in all reality I have no clue, I just checked what the Panther box said and made some guesses

Just my 2 cents.
