i personally don't like that the "perforated bottom speaker and microphone grilles have been transformed into larger shapes alongside the Dock Connector" they don't look very Apple-ish.

I believe that's the case's design, with the iPhone maintaining the grilles.

Plastic instead of aluminium

I don'tknow if i'm the only one here, but i would like to see the backside of the phone change to plastic, because i dropped my iphone a couple of times already just because it slipped out of my hand because the alu back i just to smooth.
Glossy plastic would provide a much better grip on the phone, and that would be a good reason to exchange alu for plastic in my opinion ;-).

Right. If they put an other one, this thing might become alive!
I can picture myself trying to turn off the ringer and the iPhone says: "What are you doing, Dave?"... ;)

But then again, if you're about to make a drunken phone call to an ex, the phone would say, "I can't allow you to do that Dave..." and shut down all outgoing calls to her/his number.

two problems with templates

I haven't heard anyone else mention them so here are two things I noticed:

1) The "tapering" diagram in the upper left, is both poorly drawn (non-continuous curve), and would leave a smaller screen on the front of the iPhone by quite a large amount. The front screen is glass and needs to be flat for obvious reasons. If you do an isometric projection of what an iPhone with that profile would look like, it appears that the front screen would be significantly smaller and surrounded by a huge margin of metal/plastic/whatever.

2) Despite the verbal description, the image (bottom left), of the base of the new iPhone is in reality *less* curved and actually quite close to a square block. If this truly is the cross-sectional profile of the new iPhone, then the new "curvyness" would only be from top to bottom, with the sides actually getting squarer.

Since neither of these makes any sense, and since Apple does not generally hand out templates of upcoming products, ever .... it's likely that these are (badly) redrawn by whomever submitted them to iLounge and based on either a verbal description or an even sketchier original graphic.

In other words they are at least twice and possibly three times removed from the original source and should not be trusted.

ummm powerbook....macbook?

I believe what he was originally asking was "When was the last time Apple had an aluminum product, and then changed it to plastic?"

So the MacBook is not one. I'm not sure about older PowerBooks.

For the converse of that, the new iMacs are now aluminum. There definitely is a trend of going towards aluminum.

Seeing as how the aluminum iMacs look a lot like the current iPhones, I doubt they would change the iPhone's metal look. They have too much invested in it.

It simply doesn't make any sense why apple would introduce a plastic iphone after they've switched the entire iPod line to aluminum casing.

What I'd like to see is an all black back, plus instead of having the chrome ring around the front, it would have color options. I'd get blue in a heartbeat.

Well, the disinformation campaign is a success then, as far as I'm concerned. I don't know what to believe any more.

All I know is that it'll be 3G and I'm looking forward to getting one, and to running all those cool 3d party apps!! I'm sure it'll look great, too, whatever Apple decides in the end.

Why do some people seem to think that a second camera on the iPhone for video chat is such a 'futuristic' (for want of a better word) idea?

Yeah, a better word would've been good. No one thinks it's futuristic. They just see that it isn't implemented at this point, but probably will be soon.

Isn't the back now plastic with an aluminum look?

No.

It sure doesn't feel like aluminum.

Sure does to me.

I HATE the chrome, scratch-prone ring.
My iPhone looks great, save that dang ring (which was a victim of my Incase Topo sleeve).
BAH!

I'd personally be happier with the iPod touch bevel.

More like iPod Touch?

I got the iPhone on day one, and consistently marvel at its design, wondering in my mind how on Earth this beauty could be "improved" upon. Design change is inevitable, especially in the world of Apple; but talk about near perfection right out of the gate - it's a fantastic design, look and feel. ('cept it IS a bit on the slippery side, as mentioned elsewhere.)

Then the iPod Touch came out, and I found myself a bit jealous. I like the tapered "cut" running around the side of the machine, and the feel of it is one of credit-card sharpness - plus putting the "main touch buttons" on an OS X Dock-like shelf adds a nice dimensionality, even though that is a software-driven cosmetic design as opposed to a "hardware" (case) design. It feels and looks really nice.

So, as much as I thought the current iPhone "form" can't be improved upon, the iPod Touch changed my view - and if the new 3G iPhone can stand out on its own with an up tick in design, bring it on- as we all know, speculation aside, whatever they come out with will be dripping with Steve's approval, and the man, along with his main-man designer Ive, have rarely failed us with near-perfect eye candy goodness!:D

It could be a PRODUCT(RED) version, I wouldn't mind. Those red iPod are very nice.

Wow, I would get a Product(RED) iPhone in a split second, that would be so great. I got some nanos for my family and love the color.

But eeeek then one would have to wait for the new iPhone, no? It's not like they're going to crank out a million (red) ones and just hope we want them.

What am I worried about, my iPhone has a year left on the old contract...

I am more curious about the camera in the back. No news about that. Will it take 3,2mp shots? Will it have a flash - I doubt that?! What about video-resolution?
