... i don't think apple will bring plastic into the iphone... it has nothing to do with durability or quality. it has to do with the intangible factors of the iphone. sure, general metals are more dense than plastics, so metals offer more confidence, the weight reinforces the confidence in the product. it's all about the intangible factor: it's not about what you can see, it's about what you can feel, the emotion... for me, that's what distinguish apple, from everybody else.
don't disappoint me apple... :p

just my 2 cents

Also if interest is that is accessory manfactures who are report plactic.
All they really need to know is the shape
so apple could send plastic mookups that can be cast pretty easy
While working on the stamp for the metal case is being tooled.

Don't think it's going plastic.
if they want two products like nano and classic then i would have thought it would follow the same track.
The Nano is the previous generation but the smallest it can be (which means slimmer as the screen could only really shrink to say 3inch before it would not be usedable)
The classic is feature improvement.
But if these guys are saying same size but slimmer curveier then i guess it's just one iPhone for now

boring. All this insider information is going to make the release anti-climatic. Seems like we know everything already. Shape, size, color, features. Can someone please develop a software so i can control my car James Bond style with it?

All joking aside, can't wait for WDDC. Bring on the goods Steve!

We know nothing.

nooo....no plastic please
My friend pre-ordered a PRADA phone, and finally upsad by its feeling of plastic (and changed to use iPhone lateron)
though plastic appearance may be close to metal, while touching it, you may feel the temperature, weight and surface texture are almost different.

2-way video isn't something I NEED, but it WOULD be cool and fun and even useful. What do I do now with the 90+% of people I know who don't have webcams? I don't video conference with them. But I do with the other 10%. I'd happily use iPhone video chat with the few who could handle it. And yes, I'd do it when I had a good signal, not when I don't. Very often I'd be doing it from my home WiFi in fact--like a handheld iSight that doesn't tie me to my desk.

And most often, I would imagine I'd be video chatting with someone on a computer--not someone on a phone.

That's how I feel. Most people I know still don't have/use web cams, so there wouldn't be a lot of people for me to use it with.

But I could see it being cool to talk via video conference to my wife when I'm away (me on the iPhone, her on the iMac).

tapered edges
all black casing
chrome volume buttons
2mm thinner
thinner bezel

PERFECT!! looks pretty hot too (esp if the apple logo breathes on and off)

my only concern is whether it could get enough battery life esp with 3G, GPS, and that gigantic screen.

material choices much more complex than just aesthetics

Is it really that tough for so many people to grasp the concept that short radio waves don't pass through aluminum that well. Does everyone screaming "ZOMG NO PLASTIC - METAL OR I WON'T BUY THE NEW IPHONE!!!:mad::eek::eek::eek::( " really want a phone without decent reception?

First of all, with the change over to 3G, there are many new factors at play for signal strength and performance. The 3G iPhone air interface is now W-CDMA (UMTS) instead of TDMA (GSM) which means the technologies will have different performance characteristics for signal reception and de-multiplexing. Along side this fact, most UMTS networks run on a different frequency band than existing GSM/EDGE networks, which means the radio waves will have different behavior when encountering different metals, and the transmittance capacity will be different. Also something else that is different is that UMTS (3G) cellphone transceivers require more power than their GSM equivalents. Couple this with the fact that phones manage their output power based upon signal strength, and you can see why a good part of energy use optimization has to do with keeping a good signal to the tower.
Besides all these complexities of the telecommunications side, the new iPhone will also most likely carry an onboard GPS chip, which adds yet another layer of complexity for signal reception through different materials.

I'm sure Apple has many smart RF engineers working on the issues, and I trust them to make the best design compromises for the device, whether that means more plastic or not.

Those pictures tend to match the lines of the phone indicated on the drawings from the first page...but of course neither are official. Looks great though.

Although I am fond of current backside design, I still like the idea of using Aluminium.

If Apple had change the backcase material because of reception, why can't they just embed plastic Apple logo in Al. casing like Macbook Pro? Would this not warranty enough window for the EM transmission to come in and go?

Just my two cents

Well, if the third sensor is a camera, as some have anticipated, then it might be something worth holding out for.

Yeah, 'cause iPhone doesn't ALREADY HAVE A CAMERA. Good Lord. The camera in the iPhone will support video recording even if EDGE is not the best mobile medium for video chat. It's just the software doesn't (yet) support video.

I'm not sure what the point of video chat on iPhone might be. It's been built into laptops and iMacs for years and no one really uses it. People like their chat with the typing part.

no two way video from AT&T

if the phone is 3G then video calls are pretty much part of the deal so a camera on the front of the phone is a necessity. The one I have on my current 3G phone is about as good as you'd expect it to be for video calls, it makes everyone look like Mr Bean.

all the rumors about 2 way video it can't happen at&t does not have that on the roadmap or budget. Don't think 3G means video it will provide better data speeds that is all. At&t is still about a year or more away. Sorry all it helps to have inside info. The only thing even deployed on the network in about 10,000 people with handsets that will do one way video. Meaning I'm holding a 3G phone with a camera and I can transmit my image but I can't see you.

But then again, if you're about to make a drunken phone call to an ex, the phone would say, "I can't allow you to do that Dave..." and shut down all outgoing calls to her/his number.
Maybe that's what the sensor IS. It analyzes your breath and if the alcohol content is too high it will block any person in the address where the checkbox "ex" is ticked.

So what if AT&T is lousy? Why would that stop Apple from introducing that feature in Europe? Just saying...

Third sensor

Third sensor
Please let it be a remote window...maybe it'll double as an Apple Remote aka Front Row/ Apple TV :D

3G means video in a big way. HSDPA will help capacity, and also to bring 2 cam phones to be a bit more represented in the US...

It's a widely-used, standard 3G feature in Europe. Have you been reading the thread?

I may be late to the game on this one, but just read this over at Engadget: Real or Fake?

I'm hoping its oh-so-fake as it looks very generic with all of the other touch screen phones springing up at the moment - the current iPhone has enough about it to separate it from the heard...

Looks plausible. I just don't think Jonathon Ives when I see it. Then again, we should stop expecting something extreme - we know the screen size is here to stay and the home button isn't going anywhere.

edit: it looks TOO bland.
