have you ever compared it to a model? you really have to compare it to bring out the difference the first time so it registers in your head and then you always see it from that point on.

We have 3 3G iPhones and 2 3GS's here, so yes, I have compared. I have a 3G and 3GS in front of me right now. The 3GS screen has a warmer color temperature overall, but it's uniform across the entire screen. There is no part of the bottom that is more yellow, even at full brightness.

If it takes effort to find it, why worry about it? I never, and I literally mean never, have my brightness anywhere above 50%. It's just not necessary unless you want to admire how vivid the screen can get. I haven't done that since I bought my 1st gen back in February of last year.

Seriously. Every generation of iphone so far has had these crazy things that seem to be more figment of people's imaginations than reality. The 1st gen, the 3g and this one. All these crazy things where some wackos return their phones 5 or 6 times, talk about version and build numbers, it is absolutely insane.

Seriously, look at the top and bottom really fast? WTH.

Your post reminds me of this picture, haha

I've got 2 3gs's here. One is a 32gb, 926, and has a yellow bottom portion of the screen. The other is a 16gb, 925, and has a uniform but warm screen. The uniform screen is much more desirable IMO. I haven't decided if I'm going to try to exchange the 32gb.

It's not a figment of anyone's imagination. This is a very real issue that is EXTREMELY noticeable.

For me, it's more the washed out colors that bother me.

When compared against my 3G, the 3GS definitely looks more washed out, but if I view a photo (same photo from same source) on both devices, the 3GS seems to reproduce the colours much more acccurately, with more natural tones.

People are just going to have to realise that because of Apples manufacturing preference (made in a sweatshop in China) they can't get the QC right at all. The 3G was plagued with problems, I had around 10 replacements for stuff like, cracking, dust under the screen, dead pixels, light leaks. The 3G I have now isn't perfect(the seal is messed up) but I can't be arsed anymore.

It puts me off the 3GS, having to go through all that **** again, worrying that there is a good chance there will be some issue with either the build quality or the screen.

My advice to the original poster would be to sit in the apple shop until you get a perfect one, no matter how long it takes.

I tried to get them to let me do that but they start to deny that there's any issues when it's obvious. Like I'm holding up a yellow iPhone to one that is clearly normal and they're telling me it's exactly the same. What should I say to them?

So far all the replacements seem to have the same issue. When does everyone think it will be likely enough to get a replacement without a yellow bottom? Will Apple even correct the problem in future production?

I just picked up my 16gb yesterday and my phone has no yellowing at all. Vey white. ;)

The problem is, if you look hard enough for long enough you'll notice a slight contrast difference between the top and bottom. I'm with the OP that this is across the board. The backlight is up top so it's a tiny bit darker/yellower on the bottom.

That being said, I used to frequent a skateboarding forum a lot, and whenever someone posted that they got a board in the mail that had some kind of manufacturing defect or anomaly, the unanimous response from other members would always be, "who cares, ride the sh*t out of it!"

My iPhone 3GS 16GB (black, from O2 UK) has the yellow screen (week 20).
I think it's due to the new coating on the screen and not on the screen itself. This is my first iPhone so I'm not too bothered about it... other than that the phone is 'perfect'.

A great comparison showing the 'yellow bottom' issue on the iPhone 3GS.

The image above demonstrates the exact look of my replacement iPhone 3GS. I called Apple Support and will be going for a second replacement on Tuesday.

I've got a 3GS 16GB (black, week 20 from O2 UK) and it's got that yellow look to it, but it's not too bad... I can live with it... I'd rather not risk getting a replacement and it have one of the other multitude of issues people have brought to our attention on these boards... misaligned bezel, wobbly buttons, cracks, dust, etc, etc

My first 3Gs looked just like that middle one. My second (the one I'm using now) is actually inbetween the 3G and the 2G in the white balance. I'm starting to be very happy with how mine looks now... especially compared to the first one I had.

Ironically, both were 925s.

I would like to point out that if I look closely enough (maybe if I try hard enough to fake my mind into seeing it) I can see a slight difference in brightness between the top and the bottom of all 3 units.

Really good picture. Exactly how all of my 3GS look. Some worse, some better. Either way, the whole screen should be UNIFORM. Not gradient.

Every one of my 32 GB Black 3GS (I've had three now) all had the washed out/warm/yellow look. My buddy just bought a 16GB black from the same store and it looks white like my previous 3G. His was built 926. I've had two 924 and the first was 925.

Comparison of top white and bottom 'white.' I can understand why the genius would have a hard time finding it, but the yellow is unacceptable.
