Every one of my 32 GB Black 3GS (I've had three now) all had the washed out/warm/yellow look. My buddy just bought a 16GB black from the same store and it looks white like my previous 3G. His was built 926. I've had two 924 and the first was 925.

I am going to wait and see if any 26/27's come in at Best Buy before I attempt another swap.

If this yellow screen issue is as widespread as it seems to be, is it likely that Apple will issue a recall or could it be addressed through a firmware update?

Is this likely a hardware issue with the screens or just poor calibration of the screens?

Because the screen is not uniform, all signs point to a hardware issue - likely the reason swaps are being performed instead of software restores.

A great comparison showing the 'yellow bottom' issue on the iPhone 3GS.

iPhone 2G - iPhone 3GS - iPhone 3G

My 3GS looks like that. The funny thing is thats one of the better screens, there are worser ones than that, the replacement phone i was offered looked worse than that. It looked like urine after a multivitamin tablet.

Same thing with 4 of the phones on the store floor. I'm slowly getting used to my screen...it's kinda easier on the eyes too

Another thing is, its hard to convince geniuses there's something wrong unless you have phones side by side like the pic above...there's no reference point and unless something is blatantly wrong they'll just dismiss the issue

Yes, all iPhones will be slightly yellower toward the bottom. Those who say otherwise are.. well.. wrong, or just don't notice.

Its a little annoying, but not a big deal. No, its not an optical illusion either. I compared it side by side with my 3g and there is a difference. I have the 924 32gb black. I didn't even notice it before now, and I'm a graphic designer.

My biggest annoyance is the brightness level compared to my 3g, although that is adjustable. I wonder if this is where Apple is getting the improved battery figures? Using the same exact display settings for brightness, tested in different lighting conditions at different times of the day, my 3gs is nearly twice as dark as the 3g. I have to raise the brightness slider up much further to match to two together. If I turn off auto-brightness, however, they are nearly the same. So I credit it to over-zealous power saving. Its annoying though because the baseline for my screen is too dark. I turned it up today--hopefully it doesn't hit the battery life too hard because in some brighter lighting conditions it may be brighter than normal? Not sure.

Edit add:

Looking at the 3g and 3gs side by side, from varying angles, the 3gs had much better viewing angles. I couldn't get my display to turn orange at angles like my old 3g would. The displays were set to the same brightness and the 3gs was brighter from all angles.

The colors are also a bit cooler than my 3g but still warmer than my first gen. Aside from the yellowing bottom, the white balance is really good and photos side by side show a bit more detail and clarity near shadow areas on my 3gs.

Either way it looks away better than the TN piece of crap on my wife's Dell. Although it doesn't come close to the quality of my H-IPS calibrated monitor either. The yellowing only slightly annoys me now when in landscape in Safari on a mostly white or new page. I wish I hadn't read this post! However, I will most likely forget about it in the coming weeks.

thats simply not true that all phones are yellow at the bottom. my 3g is flawless. all the display models in the store except for one were flawless.

theres an obvious problem and the geniuses are being told by apple not to acknoledge a problem. its pretty ridiculous if you ask me

Dammit. Why did I read this thread?

My replacement iPhone 3G has this problem too. The first five digits of the serial number is 88923. This is my 4th iPhone and I didn't notice this on the other ones I had. Oh well, it's not a big deal as this one has the least problems out of the four. I'll see if the other iPhones in my family have this problem too.

That's a good photo, and my 3GS looks exactly like that one, which I believe is one of the better ones.

Personally, I think the 3G on the right shows a slight variation from top to bottom too, just as my own 3G does.

Same. I don't think this is a 3GS specific issue. I think some of the screens are like this and some aren't. My guess is that it's caused by Apple using different parts from different LCD manufacturers or different models within a manufacturer.

I have a week 25 3GS with absolutely zero yellowing. In fact, this is the most perfect 3G/3GS I have ever had. I was in double digit replacements for the 3G and feel like I might not need to go through that pain with the 3GS.

I still have yet to see this yellow-gradient issue in the wild.

This kind of stuff makes me angry.

It's obviously one of the lcd vendors produced a terrible screen.

NOBODY saw this? Riiight...

New iPhone 3GS week 25 - second replacement with a yellow tint on the bottom of the screen. Nevertheless the build quality on this phone is great - perfect buttons, bezel, speaker, etc. I may just keep it and ignore the yellowing at this point unless I can be sure a replacement would be better than this.
