F that, I'm a junior in college, but when I was in highschool if I didn't have my phone in class I would die, along with everyother student. EVERYONE had their phone on them constantly texting. My school eventually got a rule where the phone had to be out on ones desk and off so everyone just invested in a cheap phone put it on their desk and continued to use their real one.

You mean you guys do texting during the class? How do you study and get good grades like that? Seriously... I never attended high school in the U.S., but I don't think they'll let you graduate that easily...

lol.....It happens everyday..people graduate....

Just like how cellphones are a natural part of life in this era...so is cellphones at school...cellphones are used for many other things..not just texting...or else no one would have cellphones and many companies would lose alot of money from anyone under 18 without a cellphone.

Cell phones for work are for making money and dealing with customers. Cell phones in school do nothing. Last time I looked McDonald's works who are in highschool don't need a cell phone.
When I am in training and if my phone or my work phone rings, I get written up. If I get written up 3 times I am out of a job. When I do training I tell people cell phones are to be turned off and if I hear one ring I kick them out of class.
You're right. Common sense DOES seem to be in short supply.

You're not kidding!!!

You gotta remember that students are no longer graded on their raw test scores as it was where and when I went to high school. Nowadays alot of schools are on the 5.0 scale instead of the 4.0 scale so grades are artificially inflated. Extra credit is offered in many classes to boost ones grades and I have actually seen a few students grades that actually exceeded the scale. Ala a 5.21 on a 5.0 scale. Huh, how does that work I ask my self. Well, it all fake and artificial. Much like the life of many of Gen Yers. The dumbing down of America. The schools, faculty and parents are actually doing their offspring a disservice.

Reminds me of the 5 or six high school age kids I saw in the airport last Spring. It was 85F out side and about 80F in the terminal and headed to a warmer climate but yet these individuals were clad in the latest Ambercrobie&Fitch winter wear. Complete with toboggans and all. They might be clueless but at least they try to look good doing it. How sad.

Talk about thread drift.

This reminds of the film student that blamed his constant iphone problems for why he couldn't complete his school project in time. Stanley Kubrick would be turning in his grave if he heard that.

Who told you what to do in school?

Cell phones are a distraction, bottom line, and you shouldn't be able to bring them to school.

An iPhone can be a distraction while at job, at school, at church, everywhere. Just one has to be responsible and learn when it is appropiate to take it out....use it. As long as you know that what's the problem of bringing it anywhere you go?

I don't really see the problem with bring cell phones to school, class. In the end learning is the student's responsibility, not the teacher's. If a student would rather text than listen to the course material (provided they're unable to multitask :p) then that's their prerogative. Students texting does not distract me nor does it ever seem to distract my professors. Granted in high school teacher's are held to a different responsibility than professors.

I make it a personal rule not to text until class breaks for a few minutes or until class ends. But I say that with a bit of hypocrisy, because when my laptop is out taking notes I'm also using it to e-mail, IM.

The first mention of a cellphone & school on this forum gets the whole board in a frenzy.

"OMG! Your like supposed to be learnin"

Shut up, Who cares. If someone wants to waste their time in school with a cellphone, it is their problem. Just because some guy on the internet told them not to do so, I'm pretty sure they are not going to listen to you.

No. If you think about it, it is our problem. Us being the rest of the generation of people in question. I'm not going to be taxed for millions of welfare checks for people who refused to pay attention in school and therefore cannot find a job.

*tries to think of something intelligently relevant* oooh ooh i got something..

My school, even college, and uni looked poorly down on people texting, phones going off etc in class. From a personal aspect for me, its just impolite, and rather rude i guess, unless the lesson is finished, in which case thats fair enough.

IF your gonna text in lesson, then at least do it silently, TURN OFF THE RINGTONES!! lol :p

Thats my 2 pieces

So what are you doing on these boards? Go help the children learn and encourage them!

Mobile phones are indeed a distraction that should be turned off, silenced and/or ignored during classes/meetings, not just because they distract the owner, but out of respect for the people around you in those situations (kind of like in the cinema - think of those around you and whether or not they want to be distracted by you playing with your phone in any given situation).

I agree with a lot of what you're saying by the way but to say it's JUST your generation is very silly. Every generation have people who are lazy etc. Those guys get the mindless jobs that keep the cogs turning - they're needed.

I just graduated last May, and at my university, you'd be tossed out of class if you were caught screwing around with your phone (or on MySpace, Facebook, whatever--I was a CompSci major, so most classes had computers on every desk) during a lecture.

Not entirely relevant, but I feel like throwing it out there anyway--my best friend is an attorney; you can be arrested for contempt of court if your phone goes off while court's in session. Not to mention the fact that you'd be on that judge's sh*t list for God knows how long.

When i was in college i was doing music tech, and the same for uni in fact. I just regard it common courtesy to not be on the phone in the middle of a lesson, or lecture.. obviously it got more relaxed toward the uni end of the scale. It was also dependent on different teachers. :)

Your wrong, it is the teacher's responsibility to make sure his students are learning and believe it or not the teacher is the one's that make the rules in the classroom..

If they need the phone's for emergencies at school, the students don't need them, I'm sure the teacher has one... When I went to school you wouldn't even think about having one..

I'm glad the OP is using his for whatever business he needs to use it for, but the school my daughter goes to,if they even see or hear the phone unless it is being used for an emergency get's the phone taken away and the parents called..

I saw this one girl at my daughter's school, she was talking to the teacher and her phone rang... The student said to the teacher " Hold on a minute, it's my friend, I have to answer this".. ANd this was during school... WTF..

It's really sad that this generation thinks that they can walk around with whatever they want just because there friends do it... I mean really what 10 year old needs a cell phone.. Makes no sense to me..

But to the OP if your using it on lunch and only on breaks then there shouldn't be a problem. If it starts effecting your grades then I see it being an issue..

You know what makes me sad? Seeing people who can not get their hononyms in order insulting a whole generation of people because they think mobile phones will get in the way of their learning. I'm guessing that you did not have a mobile phone in school, so how come you do not know the difference between 'there', 'their' and 'they're'? I apologise for what may come across as me being rude. I do not intend to be. I only want to point out the hypocrisy in your post.

Believe it or not, the world's a changin'. A cellphone is pretty much a staple with anybody these days. You may agree with that or not, but that's the way it is.

Common courtesy would, however, dictate that this privilege be used only in the right circumstances. In class, you would just turn it off, or have it silenced.

Anyway, I had my iPhone for a day before I showed it to my girlfriend Motion X poker. She wanted to have a go, and the first thing she does is to let go of it mid shake, and put a gouge in the chrome frame. I think the OP should just be thankful it hasn't affected the phones performance.

Wow, it's just a phone.

I was actually shocked to see the amount of people on here who were angry about someone bringing a phone to a public school.

When I had a phone in High School (around 2000-2002) most teachers didn't care unless someone was openly texting during class or didn't switch the phone into silent. Phones were technically against the rules at my school (officially because they "could be used to deal drugs") but few teachers enforced the rule as long as people were courteous and respectful. Most of us were able to handle ourselves reasonably and I only remember a few idiots' phones being taken off to the principal's office.

We don't need cell jammers at schools. We don't even need rules about using a phone in class. If a student is being discourteous to their teacher (i.e. obviously texting during class, or receiving multiple calls with ringtones) it's obvious that they're not just stupid, but they're also extremely disrespectful, and they should be dealt with accordingly.

A punishment for just having a phone that's off or on silent is stupid and insulting to people in that age group. If you never give kids the chance to learn how to conduct themselves as adults, then a lot of them will grow up and behave like children. Meaning, people who weren't allowed to have a phone in high school are probably the same idiots you hear with an annoying ringtone and a loud, squeaky voice two booths down at Chili's.

Also, texting doesn't cause bad grammar. From the first day I text messaged, I made an effort to type out coherent, complete sentences. Some people don't prefer to take the time, and that's okay, as long as they (like most people) know that texting is pretty much the only time and place when this is acceptable. Someone who turns in an essay that reads like a text message would have done something equally as stupid in the 70s. There are always people who can't write in school. It's disappointing to hear someone younger than me blame big bad Technology rather than just placing it on the individuals who deserve the blame.

I still attend highschool and i am a senior and someone who is in my class ask if they can see my iPhone 3G S. It is only 4 days old. I have never dropped it and still looks brand new. I then go and sharpen my pencil. She has it between her legs trying to hide the phone while teh teacher came by. Apparent she was spooked and drop the phone. Now the back of my iPhone has small chips out of it...very small but kind of noticeable...i wanted at last one week of it lookin new....
I think i am definately going to buy a case lol....and i will no longer let people i do not know use or see my iPhone as i am not trying to pay a 199 replacement fee in the first few months...

Check other threads about this subject it's amazing how people will allow other people to handle their personal property....

by the way I hope this wasn't an English class ? See example in red
..lol:D

On a side note, iPhone texting is the best when you turn off the keyboard click noises because you can't really hear the fingers against the glass panel.

I'm a pre-med student and do just fine. I don't study in class though, I study at home
