My school eventually got a rule where the phone had to be out on ones desk and off so everyone just invested in a cheap phone put it on their desk and continued to use their real one.

I learn something every day as a teacher. Thanks. Something else to watch for now...

I have a rule in my classroom - use a cell phone or if I even see it in class it's mine for the week. Let's just say that I have no arguments after someone has lost their phone for a week. I make their parents come and pick it up too.

Cell phones are very disruptive in the classroom environment and that is why I ban them in my classroom.

I was actually shocked to see the amount of people on here who were angry about someone bringing a phone to a public school.

When I had a phone in High School (around 2000-2002) most teachers didn't care unless someone was openly texting during class or didn't switch the phone into silent. Phones were technically against the rules at my school (officially because they "could be used to deal drugs") but few teachers enforced the rule as long as people were courteous and respectful. Most of us were able to handle ourselves reasonably and I only remember a few idiots' phones being taken off to the principal's office.

We don't need cell jammers at schools. We don't even need rules about using a phone in class. If a student is being discourteous to their teacher (i.e. obviously texting during class, or receiving multiple calls with ringtones) it's obvious that they're not just stupid, but they're also extremely disrespectful, and they should be dealt with accordingly.

A punishment for just having a phone that's off or on silent is stupid and insulting to people in that age group. If you never give kids the chance to learn how to conduct themselves as adults, then a lot of them will grow up and behave like children. Meaning, people who weren't allowed to have a phone in high school are probably the same idiots you hear with an annoying ringtone and a loud, squeaky voice two booths down at Chili's.

Also, texting doesn't cause bad grammar. From the first day I text messaged, I made an effort to type out coherent, complete sentences. Some people don't prefer to take the time, and that's okay, as long as they (like most people) know that texting is pretty much the only time and place when this is acceptable. Someone who turns in an essay that reads like a text message would have done something equally as stupid in the 70s. There are always people who can't write in school. It's disappointing to hear someone younger than me blame big bad Technology rather than just placing it on the individuals who deserve the blame.

I completely agree with you here. Very well put.

Yea straight a student, and yes that was a rant. Certain things, like morons who think cell phones should be banned in school and the complete stupidity of the overall public school system, piss me off. Therefore I rant. Not only do I get straight A's but I also am an extremely fast test taker. When I finish and have to sit silently for sometimes up to an hour in a row, my phone is the only thing that stops me from falling asleep or going nuts, which are both also not allowed. That is another reason why cell phones should b allowed in schools. Sorry about the typos and maybe a little bit of bad grammer but I'm not the best typer. Also I know the last post did sound a little more PO'd then necessary but that is how I chose to get my point an firm beliefs across
peace out

Ok ok...so I'm completely fine with people having phones in school and am on your side in this argument but in an exam!? That's just distracting to people around you. You might be a straight A student but you're definitely lacking in the area of 'respecting others'.

Personally I would have loved a mobile when I was at school, texting, MMS etc would have been hilarious, oh and a PSP for lunch breaks would have been great as well; oh to be at school in the 21st century. I don't agree with disrupting others though, but this needn't be the case.

By the way OP, did it trip the moisture/water sensor?

Teacher : Bob call 911!
Bob: How do I dial out of the school?
Teacher: Dial #56, then *656, then *56....eg...

I wasn't going to respond to this thread until I saw this... I want to make this perfectly clear. I have programmed several PBX systems and will tell you that there is not one system that will require you to punch in a code to dial 911. So, the argument above is incorrect.

OP, you should have had your phone put away, so the scratches are really your fault. Had she not been trying to hide it from the teacher, it would not have fallen. Bottom line, put it away when it is supposed to be away and you won't have a problem.

Lastly... buy a case. ;)

School is brainwash, the less you listen the better in the longrun, that's how I see it.

Yet I'm starting uni soon :D

Phones? School? Is their a better mix?
I have taken my 3G into school every day since ownership. I let anyone use it if their were my freinds, but i go MENTAL if they touch my phone or leave a fingerprint. Incase slider and Power Support all round the thing.
I dont usally take mine out in class, but my freind used his in every lesson he coudnt be arced doing. He has some pretty good results.
And my maths teacher allowed me to demonstrate shazam in class, because we were discussing searching the internet through picture and other non-written forms (the whole class gets bored at times and stops working)
Wait what did i just contribute...
:apple:

That's one less Nobel laureate from Sweden to worry about. :)

This OP has totally gone off topic. What started with, "How I messed up my iPhone when letting a girl hold it between her legs" has become "School, no place for phones," which is not an iPhone topic.

Alright its time to set everyone here straight on the whole cell phone at school thing:
first off, I'm about to start junior year of high school. I have an iPhone and I bring it with me everyday to school and use it every day at school, every class aside from pe. I text all the time in class(not like some ppl who are constant, but), eat in class all the time, talk in class constantly, never pay attention, and never study no matter what. I HAVE HAD STRIAGHT A's SINCE SEVENTH GRADE! the reason kids are stupid isn't that they are txting in class, it's just that they are plain stupid. Nothing gonna change that so get over it and stop trying to "fix them". Ain't gonna work. Another reason kids these days are stupid is because in my experience, 85-90% of teachers are either freakin terrible or below average. I've had 20ish teachers since 7th grade 2-3 of them have actually known there subject and been able to teach it effectively. No disrespect to those teachers who actually do it right, but most teachers I've had first tried to get a different job. Then theyrealized they were dumbsh*ts and went back to get a teaching degree in their spare time because it's the best thing the idiots could come up with. Teachers are useless and insanely boring and that's another reason I text in class. Unless your some sort of hardcore nerd, u text in class. I personally text everyday in class and have never been caught. More proof of terrible teachers. Phoes in class are the only way to keep our sanity. They don't stop us from learning the terrible teachers and school system along with just idiotic students are the problem. Phones don't affect learning!!!

First...learn how to spell and use correct grammar, then you can tell me that you get A's.

Second...why don't you stand up and teach the class if you think so little of your teachers? Lets see if the all mighty straight A student can do better than the teacher. I don't think you can...so shut up.

Saying your a hardcore nerd if you don't text in class is just stupid, maybe there are still just people out there who would like to show the teacher some respect, unlike yourself.

Also, I hope you realize that once you reach the real world and get a job and maybe mature up a bit that you aren't going to be allowed to use your cell phone at work. Guess what...you think that texting in class is all fun and games now when there aren't really any consequences other than you not being able to spell correctly, you do that sort of stuff at work and you lose your job.

So maybe its time that mature up a bit and realize that you aren't the best thing in this world who is above all the teachers. Your a junior in high school who has a bad attitude and needs to learn to be more responsible.

Don't tell me what to do in school. Tell that to my 3.8 GPA....like i said, i need the phone to call home and friends after school....i don't go straight home...and i keep it because people do go into lockers and steal it and i have seen it. When i have free time, i will go on my phone and check messages...If someone wanted to see it they can only when there is free time.

Wow, that's like 'Don't tell me what to do! You're not my dad!'

Becuase I'm the only one with an iPhone that has access to apps, we used my iPhone to do education stuff, e.g writing applications, touch-screen calculator etc.

Yeah. I'm not impressed. Abe Lincoln managed to become President of the USA without doing any "education stuff" on an iPhone.

I think we can sum this thread up as:
Teenagers will say they cant live without their precious cell phones in school.
Adults will say that, from experience, much like in everything else, that they are wrong, and their education is more important, which it is.

You will not win this battle. They will come around when they graduate and go "man, I wish I could have done HS differently. Maybe if I hadnt spent all my time on my cell phone in school, I would have gotten into that college."

Live and learn. Let them find out themselves.

My only comment to add is this (after being a youth group advisor for several years)

Today's youth (at least in the USA) have almost infinite access to knowledge and in the fastest mediums to day. Yet - statistically speaking - students test scores and education level have not even remotely reflected this.

Now I am not against progress or technology in schools - in fact - to survive in the real world, these tools are pretty much a requirement. However - like ANY TOOL - it leaves it open to abuse.

Texting, IM, Social Networking sites, etc are not necc during class time. Period. It's the equiv. to passing notes in class for the older generation. If you got caught - you were in "trouble" How is texting any different?

And I'm likely to get flamed for this - but so be it. People might say they can multitask - but the truth is - you CAN do more than one thing at a time - but it comes at a cost of true focus and concentration. So if you're trying to learn - that's what you should be doing. Saying you can text and still pay attention in class is just wrong. I'm not saying you won't retain most of what's being said - but you're mentally "crippling" yourself when you engage in that behavior.

Why do we need fire departments covering all areas? Police departments? Emergency rooms? After all, there's a .0001% of a "true emergency," right?

What a joke of an argument.

I can't tell if you're trying to miss the point or if it just comes naturally. Your argument is that cell phones are necessary because 1) there might be an emergency, and 2) landlines will not suffice in that instance.

Now what I said is there's a tiny chance of both of those things being true. In no way does that argument imply that fire and police departments are unnecessary - it simply implies that in the rare cases when they are necessary at school, they can be reached by land line. Or, if necessary, by a teacher with a cell phone. 25 kids in class with cellphones is not necessary to respond to ANY emergency.

You can't honestly think every kid in school needs a cell phone for emergency/safety reasons - it's just too ridiculous.

Omg every thread on mac rumors turns into spelling and grammar rants. Its an internet forum people not an English paper! :p

True, but when the post being dissected was written by someone bragging about the amazing grades he's able to get in spite of the fact that he has to sit through classes taught by complete morons, apparently, I think a little nitpicking is completely justified. :)

Saw this and fell in love...

I still attend highschool and i am a senior and someone who is in my class ask if they can see my iPhone 3G S. It is only 4 days old. I have never dropped it and still looks brand new. I then go and sharpen my pencil. She has it between her legs trying to hide the phone while teh teacher came by. Apparent she was spooked and drop the phone. Now the back of my iPhone has small chips out of it...very small but kind of noticeable...i wanted at last one week of it lookin new....
I think i am definately going to buy a case lol....and i will no longer let people i do not know use or see my iPhone as i am not trying to pay a 199 replacement fee in the first few months...

I stopped buying cases after the first case I bought scrached the chrome bezel on my 2G.. I have had the 3G and 3GS since then with no cases and have never had a problem. Just get a screen protector.

The real problem is that the retard chick put it between here cavs when she could have put it between her thighs ;) that woudl have made more sense.. I tell you at this point there is no reason to buy a case u already got the chips.. just dont give it to a girl.. they dont really value gadgets or not scratching them..

You don't need a cell phone to learn, which is what you're supposed to be doing.

Are you effin serious?

It is quite OBVIOUS that he doesn't need a phone to "learn". I don't think anyone, yourself included, needs a phone to learn. I still don't see the problem with him having a phone at school. What is the purpose of a "mobile" phone anyway if you don't have it with you?

You can do tons of stuff with an iPhone in class other than, you know, calling people. Besides, who pays attention to the teacher 100% all the time.
