iSight HD

There are a number of features I'd like to see, but something I'm surprised hasn't gotten more attention is the neglect given to the iSight, or FaceTime Camera as I guess it's now called. The iPhone and iPod touch get 720p cameras, but the iMac, fully capable of holding a nice 1080p camera, has none. Photo Booth exemplifies this with a a tiny 640 x 480 image in a huge field of pixels. HD (and higher!) displays without HD cameras? Crazy, and a bit cruel.

At the least, I'd love to see a Blu-Ray BTO option but I know that's never going to happen. I think it's ridiculous but I think Apple would be too worried (read: greedy) about cutting into potential iTunes profits for HD Video content.

That said, I'd rather see some substantial hardware updates. A true quad-core processor would be nice for those of us who want to do virtualization-type work. I doubt this will happen. If it does, it'll only be on the most expensive model. I'd also like to see the upgrade to 8GB of RAM decrease in price. Way too expensive BTO right now.

Still hoping for an antiglare screen option on the 13" MBPs.

+1

Can someone who has and knows the details of the new MBA comment on the screen? Some folks claim it has some antiglare feature, perhaps a 1/4-wave coating, while the specs just say "glossy" - as if "glossy" is a positive feature :(

Can the MBA be easily be used with, e.g., windows behind you? Just asking ...

I HATE the obsession with crippled anorexic laptops... Keep that crap in the "Air" line and stop ruining the *PRO* laptops already...

I want a 15" MacBook PRO with the ExpressCard slot ...

I prefer my laptops to have some meat on their bones.. Anyone that thinks 5 Lbs is too heavy in a PRO laptop needs to crawl out of their basement and hit the fracking gym!

Someone needs to sneak inside Apple and feed the "Pro" laptops a sandwich or 5!

Somewhat bad analogy, but, I love it. Yes, Apple promotes the The Look in its laptops-- especially the MBA.

When it comes to humans, I agree. Down with Balanchine! Down with the New York City Ballet! Down with anorexia! Let's bring back the healthy look.

With laptops, though -- well, let's just say I'm not sure I could have carried Mae West around on my back.

i hope apple ups the storage on the MBP's. i need a new laptop and my wife has been bugging me for an MBP but i told her she can have an iMac. no MPB due to cost and the fact that it's only 300GB of storage

Would like to ask. If I were to buy an iMac this month and in the following month, Apple releases the new updated iMacs, will I be able to ask Apple for an exchange for the new ones? Is that possible?

I was wondering the same thing. I really wanted to get the iMac shortly. Should I just wait?

if it's anything like this year don't expect new Mac's when CPU's are released. Apple is way down on the totem pole for orders. Acer, Dell and HP get top priority on orders. expect to wait a few months. unless the rumors are true and Apple goes with AMD then they may just announce next month during Intel's CES announcement. but AMD has it's own set of issues

hard drives are easily and cheaply replaceable. Put something bigger (read: terabyte) in for less than one hundred bucks.

Very interesting rumour :)

I know that quad core cpus with SB will be released by intel mid Feb. I think this what will happen:

yes SB will be released but will apple adopt it? theystill use core2duos, no usb3, no esata, no Bluray, etc

1. plastic macbook will be dropped

hopefully

2. current mbp will become macbook (i3 cpus)

at their current price point, they better be i5's to be competative, quad core i7s can be had for under $999

3. 2 15" model will be introduced (dual core i5 SB) + Nvidia's Optimus technology. 4GB ram will be standard, flash drive will be standard one with 128GB/256GB.

OSX doesnt support Optimus or SLI, so i highly doubt it, hell even linux supports optimus, apple is just dragging their feet

4GB of ram as standard, i thought it was already standard? SSD's will probably be an option, personally i would rather not have the manufacture put in some piece of junk cheap garbage SSD like apple did with the macbook air,

that's my guesses, i also think optical drive will not be dropped yet.

probably, businesses still use optical media despite what apple fans say

It doesn't matter that Apple doesn't support Optimus. Apple have their own solution that works just as well, and is assumedly not tied down to a single graphics manufacturer.

The lack of support for SLI and Crossfire are disappointing for Mac Pro users, but irrelevant for everyone else.

SSD's will probably be an option, personally i would rather not have the manufacture put in some piece of junk cheap garbage SSD like apple did with the macbook air.

I would rather have a "cheap garbage SSD" than not. Especially as they will likely be upgradeable, and if you want something that isn't offered in blade form, you could replace the inevitable HDD with a large, expensive sandforce SSD.

tell you what, if Apple drops their prices this next update I will not build my i7 custom pc and buy an iMac. They have till next summer to impress me....
( oh god, I'm sounding like a Windows user now...)

To impress people they invested in a spell-checker. It's a good idea.

Grammar and spelling was never one of my strong points. :p
I can fix computers but when it comes to writing papers and such I have issues.

maybe that's why he said "I'm sounding like a Windows user now" ;) .

I currently am sadly a Windows user but have no choice because of school. I still love Mac and use my G4's daily. :)
I'm waiting to buy an Intel Mac when I can afford one. I've been drooling over an i5 MBP for months. :p

I am looking forward to it, I'm hoping there will be a redesign, would also be nice to see an imac that can swivel and rotate.. Would also be nice to see a 23" in the entry level macs..

There had better be some kind of redesign. I'm so tired of everyone on my campus having identical looking computers. Some variation is needed fast, it's getting very stale (I'm tired of people defending it saying "it's just the most perfect design, it should never be changed!".

"If it ain't broke..."

The best "upgrade" for the iMac line would be to fix the inherent internal design problems that are causing so many defective displays.

This looks to be both a "heat issue" (with the design limitations of trying to cram the works of a computer into such a small space, and keep it quiet while doing so) and a "display panel issue" (the LED backlit display design seems to be _more_ prone to problems, both heat-related and shipping-related). Perhaps we'll see Apple go _back_ to using a non-LED display for the time being.

Hope so too, returning my 3rd iMac (and not accepting a replacement this time!!!) cuz of heat issues, backlight bleeding, and noisy hard drive.

Hopefully they'll upgrade the iMacs in January, but if not I guess it'll just give me more time to save for a SSD.
