Except the Air has never had a superdrive.
So that can't be counted in the future but a design trade off that is defined by the difference between the Air and the rest of MacBook range.

Let's think more positively, and just hope that the superdrive is gone.

No kidding...I love Apple products, but I dislike the company's marketing strategy. Too "closed lipped"

Wouldn't that just move the rumor frenzy to just before the scheduled roadmap announcements. Then you want them to pre-announce the Roadmap. Sure if you where the CTO of a major company buying lots of Apple product they might just show you the roadmap.

Given they have now said they want to standardize on annual events for each product group and we know they work to price points how much more of roadmap does the average consumer need?

Catch Steve's words:

While introducing the new MBA:

"..and we think it is the next generation of MacBooks."

1.SuperDrive is out
2.iSight renamed to FaceTime
3.More battery life
4.Sandy Bridge!

Except the Air has never had a superdrive.
So that can't be counted in the future but a design trade off that is defined by the difference between the Air and the rest of MacBook range.

Steve Jobs didn't mean that this upgrade of MBA is the next gen.

He meant that MBA IS the the future.

So I am almost 100% that SuperDrive will be out in the next upgrade. Look at how he supported this move at the MBA first introduction too...

IMO SuperDrive and optical drives are old. Even Sony PSP console from now on doesn't use UMD discs. It can be used for games via downloads from the PS Store.

Does that ring any bells? Yep.

Mac App Store=SuperDrive not neded.

Doesn't the store need to Open and Useful before it can used as a way to remove another means of delivery.

Maybe the 2012 MacBookPro's might be in a position to remove optical but there are some really important things that need to be in place first. Not just the app store. I just can't see it happening this round.

Blade SSD like the air so it can be double layered with the motherboard yes.

From my point of view Apple is the company that takes risks.

Just like they did with iPhone,iPod and by taking the risk of making a laptop without Optical Drive.

MBA is a very big success and people don't care much that it doesn't come with Oprical drive.

That is all that Apple needs to take out the SuperDrive.

Also the iPhone AppStore is a HUGE success along with the iPad AppStore.

Do you think the Mac App store is going to be a fail. I don't thunk so.

But most of all they will be taking extra $ from the sales of the external SuperDrive too.

SuperDrive will be ditched out.

You probably don't like surprise parties or wrapped gifts, either?

Yeah, surprises are great, but there's a limit to all of that. It would be a horrible feeling if I bought a macbook now and it was replaced with something better in a couple of months. $1000 is something I don't want to take a chance on...

That is an excellent point, but I can't wait much longer unless I am informed of an update or an update is released. I guess it is selfish of me to expect Apple to relinquish information because I am a little pressed for time

I disagree. I think people buy Macbook Air because of increased mobility and they are willing to sacrifice some things...like the optical drive. I believe that a large portion of macbook white and pro users use their optical drives and would see a shortcoming in taking it out.

If you're happy enough with the computer to buy it, then why would you feel horrible if there was a new one in a few months? Has the MacBook somehow become worse just because a new one has come out? The MacBook Pro that I'm using right now is 5 revisions out of date right now and it didn't magically become slower right after each of those new models came out. You're not taking a chance on anything, it's a computer, stop worry about new models. Otherwise you're never going to buy a new one because in a couple of months that one is going to be replaced with something better too.

It would be an interesting step for Apple to remove the SuperDrive completely. I don't know how often they are used anymore, but I only use mine at home to rip the occasional movie for my iPhone. In my situation having the external SD would be ideal if it meant that the removal of the optical drive could mean a bigger battery or smaller frame.

Some of you people are freaking hilarious. :D

Why would Apple remove the Super Drive? Just because they can? They'll need a compelling reason to do so in the MBP line and won't do it just to make them thinner/lighter. (Been there, done that).

I too hope they find other tech to use in its place (which has already been discussed ad nauseam), but if it's just going to be dead space then hell, keep it in until there's just cause to remove it.

Of course there is a serious, actual reason.

If SD is out then MBP 13 will have the room for a discrete GPU and more battery life and a core iX..

Apple never acts before thinking..and I sincerely believe this is why their computers are so much more expensive than PCs.

Because they engineer their machines. They think, they do,they undo..THEY IMAGINE.

So I have no problem taking out the SD if it is for better performance.

This is exactly why Apple introduced us to the Mac App store which we will be able to use when OSX Lion hits the stores.

What Apple is trying to do is make money out of every inch of their Macs. And the Oprical Drive is an object for achieving this goal.

Didn't you notice what Steve Jobs said while introducing MBA? Let me remind you:

"Most people these days don't need CDs and DVDs. Well for watching movies..now we can rent movies ON ITUNES. For making CDs for the car..now we HAVE IPODS. For making backups.. now we have TIME MACHINE. And lastly for installing software.." blah blah he said the known feature MBA has to use an OD of another PC or Mac to install software.

As harsh as it may sound..taking the OD out is something good for Apple. And even you or me or any other user still using his/hers SD isn't going to stand in the way.

No, I don't have a problem buying the current model, but if I can wait a couple months for the newest, why wouldn't I? Also, I will have to buy either the current or next model because I can't wait past March

Yes, that is completely true. I actually never said that I need/want the drive, but I think that there are many consumers that do. I think that ODs should be scrap metal and replaced with battery life, discrete graphics, and SSDs. The only reason Apple may keep the OD is because they want to keep as many people happy as possible, and, despite what we think, there is a large chunk of people that will be a little angry if Apple takes the OD away.
on the other hand...external disc drives............

Keep the optical drive in the white Macbook.
Keep the optical drive in the MBP15 and MBP17.
Remove it from the MBP13 (with perhaps a "free external drive" promotion for students and faculty, later replaced by the free iPod touch summer promotion).
= Everyone happy.

My dream MBP13 for 2011, base model for $1299:
i5 Sandy Bridge (i7 BTO)
4 GB (8 GB BTO)
128 GB SSD (256 GB BTO)
ATI GPU with 512 MB
10h battery life
Lightpeak

Yes, if things like this are indeed in the works. I think the i3 is a given but a dGPU most likely won't be. If that's the case then there's no need to remove the ODD - at least this go-around while Apple transitions out of C2D land.

You guys act like a useless ODD is a ball and chain preventing you from doing something. I don't use the Ethernet port but it's still there - not bothering me at all.

Apple never acts before thinking..

LOL!

Research the removal (oops) of the firewire port then get back to me.

and I sincerely believe this is why their computers are so much more expensive than PCs.
They only cost more because we lemmings gleefully pay what Apple asks for them. It's really that simple. (I'm not saying this is a bad thing).

Because they engineer their machines. They think, they do,they undo..THEY IMAGINE.

How about *you* do the imagining and get something that fits what you imagine? (rather than waiting for somebody to think it up for you).

Sure, I like cool innovation as well as the next guy but at the end of the day, I still need that innovation to do something useful for me while at the same time performing better than what I have. And taking a step backwards in storage capacity (i.e., low end SSD's being standard) is not my idea of an "upgrade".

So again... if the void that was the Super Drive is filled with pricey new tech which makes me an early adopter of said tech (in a pro line that's been around for years no less)... No thanks. I'll pass.

Nope. IGP only.

Ok.

No port changes.

My dad runs a company that created all on his own. There is not a single chance he would have made it where he is now if he didn't RISK.

I never said Apple does it all perfectly. Of course there are going to be some fails BUT when the success comes. It is going to be HUGE. For example. EVERYONE. Literraly EVERYONE(even me) on the net was looking at the iPad and started laughing before the launch.

What was that? It is a HUGE selling device? Yep it is. So admit that Apple knows quite a lot more than you(and me) do. At least enough more to being able to foreseen the success of the iPad. It sold more copies than freaking iPhone did when first launched!

Also..I would love being the one who events this stuff(e.g. Working for Apple) but this is not what I do. And as a very serious man said:

"Everyone must do and act the way they are supposed to ..do the thing they were born to BE.. If everyone wants to do everything and talk about everything..then chaos will rise. "

I think you get the point.

Clever Plato quotes aside, I'm actually quite confused. My response was based on the lemmings here who blindly assume that removal of the ODD will be a good thing because that space will surely be replaced with something magical and better because after all, it's Apple and they know best. Rest assured, it will not be anything stellar.

There are just SuperDrive haters here... and for no apparent reason other then the fact it's there. :)

I at least am not a hater. I use CDs and DVDs BUT I sincerely think that they have no use in a laptop. Because yes they will be replaced by something more useful. Like battery and performance.

Also you said earlier that you'll pass if SD is replaced with some new expensive tech? No offense dude but new tech is always pricey. If you want to pay less..stick to C2D.

Also I mentioned iPad just like you mentioned FireWire. For example..to prove my point.

ODs should be taken out for battery and performance if they give an external option. Also, I don't care how cheap it is, im not going to pay for another C2D macbook. Plain and simple. It's been outdated for a while, and I think keeping it will hurt Apple sales

Digitimes claims that in addition to a new iPad revision, Apple is also planning on upgrading both the MacBook Pro and iMac in the first half of 2011.The Macbook Pro was last updated in April of 2010, so a first-half 2011 revision seems likely. Digitimes' sources believe that four new MacBook Pro models will arrive at that time.

Meanwhile, the iMac was more recently updated in July 2010, and the new claims describe a "new panel size" and "price point".

Article Link: iMac and MacBook Pro Upgrades in First Half of 2011?

Only four MacBook Pro models, eh? Does that mean that the 13" MacBook Pro will be discontinued? I suppose it'd make sense, given that the white MacBook, Mac mini, and MacBook Air models are all either retaining a Core 2 Duo and a GeForce 320M or switching to an i3 with an Intel IGP, and given that neither option is appropriate for a future 13" MacBook Pro, let alone any computer bearing the name "MacBook Pro".

So much is sacrificed for "thin"

ODs should be taken out for battery and performance if they give an external option.

Options are nice - especially on my Dell Latitude where the BD is in a bay slot, which also supports hard drives and batteries.

Nice to have the option of less weight (empty bay), more battery, extra hard drive space, or optical.

Even nicer that I can decide on which option each time that I put my laptop in its bag - and I even have the option of putting more than one of the bay devices in my bag!

Also, I don't care how cheap it is, im not going to pay for another C2D macbook. Plain and simple. It's been outdated for a while, and I think keeping it will hurt Apple sales

Newegg has 8 Core i3 laptops under $600... ;)

I think i3 has 2 cores?

Options are nice - especially on my Dell Latitude where the BD is in a bay slot, which also supports hard drives and batteries.

If only Apple could find a way of implementing that and not having it suck. Though I get the feeling they'd shy away from the idea on principle.
