im now entering the most painful 7 hours of my life. I have to wait until 5pm before I can go home and set up my new imac. It arrived (4 days early) this morning, and I know my roommate is practically dry humping the box right now. hopefully his fiance will distract him long enough for me to hose down the box and liberate my imac from it.

yay for apple! good job beating expectations.

I am going to buy the JBL creatures, completely clearing me out of cash but oh well!, which i have heard sound good.
I am still loving my imac, it hasn't crashed once and i have now managed to install the extra 512 mb ram to increase the ram to 1gb and it is much speedier than with just 512. All it took was a lot of pushing and finally got it in there.
Still keep saying to myself "Incredible...incredible computer :p" and i love coming home to it from college.

I've got those. My only disappointment was the gigantic floor wart of a transformer and the 50ft of cable on that floor wart power supply.

They sound pretty dang good though.

Wow dispatch time is down to 24 hours in the uk store..
Signs showing that they are keeping up with demand and producing more G5's :) for the busy christmas period, good one Apple :)

Well, I got home and I got it allright.
What did I get for my patience? 15 minutes with my beautiful, yet deceptively heavy new toy, and then aparently the inverter went out. so now, i have a hurge, stylish paperweight until apple fixes it. im SO glad i didnt just spend the extra $100 and go buy it at the mac store in town.

I'm happy to see tha you successfully hosed down the box prior to opening. :D I'm sorry to hear about about the problem with the inverter. Are they just going to fix your iMac or a replacement? Were you given any time frame?

Apple is pretty good about getting parts out very fast and the iMac is easy enough to work on that even a 60 year old f@rt like me can do it. At least you'll have some "tech" ragging rights in a day or two.

In the mean time go through Apple's site or http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/cats.php for the neat free or shareware you will want to play with. Make a list to download when your iMac is up and running again. That should keep you interested until the part arrives.

By the way, a bad component can be put in iMacs shipped to the stores also.

Im okay with replacing a part or two, im a UNIX system administrator. It's what I do every day. The big thing is, I shouldn't have to. I'm not one of those people who think a "consumer level" system should have a big ol' radeon in it, I just don't think that if I shell out almost my entire month's net salary on something, i should be required to do anything as far as fixing it. It should simply work.

My cube worked just fine, right out of the box, as did my iBook and my Yikes! tower. My 1st gen iPod is still chugging along, on it's original battery, but I think they really really screwed up on this machine.

I love everything about it, aside from the fact that it doesn't work.

going through the applecare chat thing at 1am (pacific time) is a painful ordeal by the way. The first guy I talked to had no clue what I was talking about, and the 2nd one took forever to get around to fixing it. At least the system was peppy and fast while I got to use it. =/

I think they should send me a free gb of ram too. I think that would help make up for it.

The frustrating thing about any electronics, especially computers, is that the components are coming off the line at the suppliers at a fast clip and there can be a bad part. If they are going to fail it generally happens fairly fast.

I've had one problem with a PB. Called Apple Monday morning, they sent a box that day and I returned the unit that day. It was back on my desk Wednesday morning - which impressed me a lot.

The iMac with it's design that lets users replace a lot parts basically should cut one day out of that down time. I think you could have asked to send it in for repair, but you'll get it up and running faster this way.

While your situation is frustrating it sure beats the problems I had with Dulls before I switched!

well sure.
Don't even get me started on Dell.
For what my company spent to get a mail server running, we could have purchased an xserve. As it is, we have a customer's xserve in our datacenter, and it never has problems. Just a happy silver bundle of joy.

Also, just for the record, I do think that asking for an upgrade to a 20" or a gig of ram is unreasonable. What IS reasonable though, might be a $10 iTunes gift certificate. What do you guys think?

If all computers worked perfectly first time and never needed parts replaced what would your monthly nett salary be as a system administrator?

The world isn’t perfect and I’m pretty sure that the manufacture of consumer electronics is neither the most perfect nor the area that needs addressing as a priority.

It’s a shame you’ve had a bad Apple but it will be fixed and you will find further imperfections with it.

On the plus side you listed three other computers which I assume you still have at least one working. I had to wait 6+ weeks for my new iMac without a home PC at all because my iBook died I can’t blame Apple for that, I’m sure they would love to offer same day delivery to everyone always but they’re not perfect.

That is correct humans aren't perfect they make mistakes. It just makes for a sad owner when they receive a sick Mac.

That must have been a very agonizing wait wit no Mac at all mpw. My wife keeps after me that we either need to update the iBook or my G4 so that I don't end of without a Mac.

It's not like they could pay me much less!
And I completely understand that even the brakes on a porche will fail occasionally, errors happen, i get that, really.

it just still doesn't make me feel any better about it.

With any luck, FedEx will be here soon with my replacement part, and the bitching will stop. (i hope)

can anyone hear that?
it's me, slamming my head against the table.
because im not getting my inverter today.
or tomorrow.
Maybe friday. maybe not.

all i got was a 49 minute call to apple, 40+ of which was spent on hold.
and an explanation about how fantastic it is that the imac is user serviceable.

insert "service this" joke here.

forgot to add this... they told me that my computer is out of warranty.
has anyone else tried to demand compensation? any results?

i am sorry to hear soem people had problems...

I am writing on my new iMac 17 G5 and it is great.

No sounds or whatsoever and just a great machine.

768 memory and i just love it.

I just got it today and , what can i say, i got the quiet one i guess.

Hope Apple fixes your machines , truly

Take good care,

Max

Much Better!

May the bitching cease!
I got my new inverter today. Gotta say, that was pretty darn quick. It shipped this morning, and got to me... this afternoon. Wow.

Enjoying the new iMac now. Although it does seem to be making more noise now, than it was the first time I got to use it.

I'ts just arrived!

My 20", 1GB, 250 Meg, bluetooth, airport express, broadband router and modem wonderful piece of kit, but I need some advice on the following question. Do I unwrap it now or go down the pub and unwrap when I get back and I've had a few, or not go down the pub, or go down the pub and leave it until the morning?
I placed the order 2 weeks ago to the day from an apple supplier in London, so it seems apple are getting their act together. I'm a switcher by the way so poor old Bill will be a bit short this Christmas.

Very happy to have you as a new member of MacRumors and as a switcher. Two cool things to accomplish. I really don't think Bill will miss your purchase.

iMac G5 Refurb

Just ordered an iMac 17" SuperDrive Refurbished for only £836, thats a 20% DISCOUNT!

Sort of surprised that there have been refurbs already but hey! I ordered on the 8th and it got dispatched today on the 10th!

Been on Windows since 95 and can't wait to try out OS X. Im takin a huge risk in switchin, but im told its worth it!

I ordered the 17" 1.8 iMac on Dec 2... it said Est. Ship time 1 - 3 days. I ordered it thinking it would arrive by Christmas... Today I check the order status to see if it's ship and the Est. Ship date was changed to Dec. 24!!! I called apple to ask WTF was going on and they told me they were trying to speed things up by shipping my iMac from California instead of overseas! I'm sure it would have arrived from overseas before Christmas!!! 22 days to ship a computer kinda sucks... I've been buying Apples & Mas for YEARS now and this is one of the suckiest orders that I've dealt with Apple with. I think it sucks... they know most of the stuff ordered is for christmas so you'd think they'd want to ship the product before christmas and not on christmas eve!! They let me cancel my order so I'm heading down tonight to the apple reseller to buy one!

Help! I'm ready to buy

I live in Michigan. No Apple store within 250 miles. What's the best bet for buying? Online? Take the trip to Apple store in Minneapolis? When can I expect delivery on my 20", 1 Gig with no other extras? I see from this forum that some buyers wait for a month or so. I sure don't want to wait for a month or even 2 weeks to get it so I need your recomendations for the best way to purchase. BTW, I'm a switcher after owning PCs since the late '80s. Last Mac was a 512SE. I can't wait!!!

If you have the time to travel, then make the trip to Minneapolis. I would recommend calling the store to see if they have some 20" iMac's in stock. They might even put one on hold for you, just be sure to ask nicely. Since you are a switcher, that will give you an opportunity to ask questions in person. Congratulations on your decision.

Of course they want to ship their product before Christmas. But if the product isnt there what are supposed to do?

heh. 2750th response.

You know, even with the hassles i went through, replacing the broken part was much easier than the other things i've had to deal with this week in computerland. 2 windows computers that took more than 4 days to diagnose, order replacement parts, get parts, install, re-troubleshoot, reinstall windows, *shudder* try to recover data from drives... you get the picture. In the end, I left work without fixing it. Just left a copy of the new MacAddict on the keyboard... hint hint.

to be fair to my boss, he's very mac friendly, lets me use a g4 instead of a windows box as my workstation. He's just cheap. He's spending 40 hours of my time, and $200 to fix the machines. Should have just got a used g4 machine and saved everyone (read: me) the headaches.

Windows 2000 install / bring to patch on a T1: 2-4 hours with antivirus, 400 + curse words.
Mac OS X Install: 35 minutes, 1 frappuccino, no swearing.
