The Ae card was installed easily mate, it is just a matter of sliding it in and attaching the lead to the aerial, anyways on the memory matter i have pushed it in, all in line, hard enough and it seems like it is fitted but clips either side don't clamp it down....starting it up now...wish me luck!

Just to report, everything is perfect - not a single dead pixel or any fan noise...but it has only registered 512mb ram so i guess i have not connected it properly, should i just push it really hard?
Anyways i am chuffed - not typing from it yet coz i am having a few problems getting reception in my room
Fredstar :D
Update: Absolutely loving the imac, it is absolutely gorgeous. No fan noise and not a single dead pixel so far and it is super fast - even with just the 512 mb but i do want to add the other 512!
Also not sure how to compress files on the pc, not much of a pc user :p, so can i send the pics to anyone who would be so kinda as too upload and compress them for me to the 100k size?

Installing RAM

In my experience you do have to force the RAM a bit. Because of the position of the slots (the innermost slot is the tricky one, as you can't get your fingers to the side catches easily). However, many messages back in this thread there was a stark warning from someone who had damaged his G5 by forcing the chip(s) in too strongly, dislodging the drive immediately above.

Coincidentally, one of the chips I bought from Crucial turned out to be faulty (they replaced it promptly). The only way I could tell this was because applications kept quitting unexpectedly (the memory registered and appeared to be OK). Eventually I ran the full test on the hardware checking disc that came with the G5, which identified the error (this takes some time). I confirmed the result swapping the suspect chip into the other slot, just to check it was the RAM and not the slot that was at fault.

It is the ram for imac as i did the online check thing and it doesn't seem to slot in at all, i had the same problem when i was installing memory on our Dell Pc, it just kinda refused to go any further in and be clamped in with the clips...i must be doing something wrong but i don't know what, i am aligning everything perfectly.

Congrats Fred on your new iMac finally arriving!

I echo the sentiments about pushing the RAM - it can take quite a bit of effort to go in! Be extremely careful to only push at the edges, preferably the corner edges of the RAM, so that you don't hurt any other parts, but after a bit of wiggling and pushing it SHOULD go in okay.

Lucky you! ENJOY YOUR IMAC!

iMac finally delivered

The place I work for are very pro-mac and I was delighted when they agreed to allow myself and a few other developers get iMacs. As an owner of a powerbook and an emac, and a recent convert, I was somewhat excited by this.

After much curfuffle with the order, then a 5 week build time, 2 week delivery time, it finally arrived today and yes, it is worth the wait, they are great machines!

I've been a bit worried about reports of them being somewhat noisy, is this typically out of the box or after a while as this is barely audible?

Anyway, hello to all, Macs are great, hell fire .Mac is useful (I am a PalmOS user aswell) and rendevous, well, mutts nutts, big time.

Yup. Coincidentally, the Crucial chip was exactly the same brand as that provided by Apple. There is a right and wrong way round to install it of course.

It's just slightly more difficult to install than usual because the slot is so tightly fitted into the machine.

So is my iMac in China or now in Europe?

Waiting ... Waiting ... Waiting

I got my first shipping notification on Nov 18, then nothing, then last night the following (using 'apecode'):

26 nov 04 90 75 truck arrived at final destination Apple Shanghai
18 nov 04 30 60 departed from product source Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
18 nov 04 05 00 boxes scanned Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
18 nov 04 00 05 Data received from supplier Apple Shanghai

Is my iMac just waiting to get on a plane or is it already in Europe? My shipment is to be merged in Holland with some software from Apple Dublin (Final Cut Express, Soundtrack etc...). So when I check TNT it just shows what's waiting in Holland.

What do you think?

I reckon it'll still be in China I'm afraid. Next update'll say something about it being booked on a flight but it'll still be 4-5 days away.

Well when i get home i shall try again to push the ram in, such a pitty that i have to go into college today!
To sum up my view of the imac
Pro's:very fast (even with just 512mb ram), great and beautiful design, relatively light so it is really easy to switch rooms now and again and the whole 'plug and play' and nearly wire-free environment is fantastic. It is also very quiet, i can hardly hear the fans in normal operation. The 20" screen is massive! Taking apart the imac is also a doddle, three quick turns with a screwdriver take off the back and there you have it, the internals of the machine are also gorgeous - oh the first time i saw that G5 in there :D . i could go on..! Oh and the speakers are surprisingly good, obvious lack of bass and mid-range but i wasn't expecting anything much better than my ibook's!

Con's:Only really con is the screen quality and dvd playback quality, it is not as good as i have expected and have seen, if i remember that is...maybe i am being a bit pedantic but it is a lil grainy and not too sharp and contrast isn't great. I think i will try and play with the settings when i get home. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as my 12" ibook, for obvious reasons as it is about 4 times the size and there is no where near that increase in the number of pixels. Can anyone else comment on their displays?
I am thinking of going to the Regent street store and having a look see at their 20"er's just so i know i don't have a crap display or something.
On the whole, a fantastic machine from Apple and super fast. A big improvement over the G4 family. Well done Apple!
Fredstar - now chuffed with his imac :D :D

I'm very happy for you Fredstar. Too bad that college had to get in the way of your iMac enjoyment, well such is life. I hope that you will be able to rectify the LCD to your satisfaction.

Thanks mate,
A note to everyone waiting:It is definately worth the wait!
To Apple's credit: I got it the day they originally projected.

I now feel like one of you guys - my first mac has arrived! I am writing this on my new 20" iMac G5.

I will post some pics when I stop playing with it. Currently adding all my CDs to iTunes and then I'm planning on fiddling with iPhoto.

I have no intention of doing any work on it until the weekend at the earliest: it's going to be lessons straight out of the textbook this week.

I'm trying to register my AppleCare without much luck at the moment, configured my wireless network (suprisingly hard), and set up mail. Is there anything else I should be doing?

Oh, and what do I have to do to get all the buttons on my Logitech MX510 mouse working? At the moment I'm enjoying the wireless Apple one, but the lack of scrollwheel is bugging me.

Dave

p.s. To all those waiting - it's well worth it when it arrives.

I am sure you will start yelling at me ... but I just canceld my Imac order. It's been 2 months now. I feel like I have ordered a car and not a computer.
Well now I will go on with my AMD64 and Linux. That's also good. Interesting: It did not seem to bother anybody that I cancelled my order of a 2500€ Imac. They do not care at all. The same way they did not care when I was waiting for the Imac to arrive...what kind of customer service is that ?

Maybe I buy the next generation ... maybe ... maybe not ... maybe ...

I can't blame you - and I'm writing on my new iMac.

I don't know what country you are in, but your iMac should have shipped within 2 months. I would write a letter (or send an epail) to Apple at their main office in the US and advise them of the situation. Try to be polite (it may be hard) and let them know about the lack of concern with the local people not only about your canceling, but also about an apparent lack of concern about your order not being processed. There is no excuse for the fact that the order wasn't shipped as Apple is shipping very fast these days. Worse is the lack of concern on the local employee's part.

As for ordering again - the iMac is still as good a computer as it was on August 31st. There might be a rev b announced by Steve Jobs that is a little bit better (2.0? BTO graphics board - if you want to go BTO again!) Might be worth the wait, but if Apple responds to your letter it may be a better deal than waiting. Hang in there and see what Apple USA says.

Check out www.griffintechnology.com for a nice little dial (the PowerMate) that will handle the scrolling. You can also set it to be a volume control when you are in iTunes.

One bit of warning - they have a lot of very nice stuff that you might droll over. They have cost me a small fortune as I have a low drool resistance to their stuff! :D

Those are very nice pictures Fredstar. Nice setup. The desk is impressive also. Now for the enjoyment, of course.

Thank you asif786 for hosting his pictures, that was very kind.

Thanks mate, the imac is really incredible - typing from it atm. No real problems so far, a few querries with the wireless internetting but i think that is more the crappy Belkin we have. Also the memory issue but a friend is coming over to fit the other 512 mb ram which should make my imac that extra bit quicker when running loads of programs.
Asif did you get it ok?!
Big praise goes out to Apple for designing this incredible, incredible computer.
One hell of a happy imac user :D

Hey Guys!

My iMac arrived yesterday :D

It's supercool, everybody in my house is drooling over it :) Unfortunately, I can hear a constant fun/buzzing sound, so that's a bit annoying/upsetting..

Fred: Glad you're enjoying yours! Did you find that it was really hard to get the iMac back cover back in after installing your extras? It took me around 20 mins to get it all lined up and back on properly

Anyway, all is well now. Thanks Wdlove for the messages of support all the way through this thread - I'm sure it's helped most of us get through our v. long shipping dates :)

I don't think the wait was so bad, at least on this side of the pond. I ordered my g5 imac on tuesdy night, about 6:30pm. It shipped out this morning from Shanghai, and I should have it next friday.

I think the biggest stress from the whole thing came from watching the apple store, waiting for another one to pop up in the refurb department.

currently, by the way, there's a 1.8 17" for $1299 there... better hurry.

I don't have a problem putting the back on, if you align the ports up it just kinda slots back in. Hope the fan noise is not to pertruding mate, best take it down to the Apple store to check...
An a big thanks to WDlove as well for the comments which helped me get through the wait! Made sure i didn't cancel the order so thanks!
Everyone in my house adores it, my brother is considering getting rid of his imac G4 :p and it is just beautiful.

I'm just glad that you and the others have receive their new G5 iMac. Now comes the great joy with using your new Mac.

Maybe I was just naive, but yes, I did expect sound at least as good as the "softballs" from the iMac G4. I am irked I am going to have to buy a subwoofer now, on top of an already expensive computer.

Other than that, I love it. In sleep mode there is NO NOISE. The loudest it got so far was when it was huffing and puffing during a processor-hungry activity... MS Window Media Player!
