I was actually thinking the same thing. It seems like all the ones that are stuck are 20" models, right? And BigEvan23 reported that every 20" iMac he saw had an unusually large number of dead/stuck pixels. So maybe Apple is replacing a lot of the screens because they realized they got a bad batch of displays.

My iMac is one of the 430 stuck in China and it is a 17" BTO.

So, has anyone received a shipment e-mail ever since the computers became stuck because of "mechanical" problems. Just wondering if this has thrown a wrench in the whole thing?

Yep, I have - got my notification on Thursday (Yesterday) although Apple status page (which is always notoriously out of date anyways) says it has not moved from China yet.

Am from the UK though, so order is shipped with TNT and not Fedex, so don't know if that would make a difference at all.

Alex, when did you order? is it a bto?

Number of orders?

Does anyone know if Apple released the number of pre-orders placed on 8/31?

Just curious. Since the hurricane missed us and I ordered a BTO w/BT I have a lot of time to just sit, wait, check email and wonder about useless information.

For instance: Rugby, ND is the geographical center of North America.

Your stuck in China dilemna reminds me of when I ordered my Mini Cooper.

The Coopers were delivered to shipping docks for their treck across the Atlantic. A group of us got our Minis somehow stuck at the back of the dock and as new Coopers arrived they would put these on the boat and the boat would become full before we could get loaded. This occurred several times.

Rumors started up from Britain that the dockhands were seen driving our Coopers around on the docks and driving them hard. It was a tense situation.

Finally we were loaded onto a ship (which we were tracking), they arrived and no mileage had been added to them.

If rumors start that your iMacs are being used, just ignore it. :)

A mechanical problem I can understand. I fly too much on business and I never want the pilot to take off if he (or she) wants something fixed first.

Spare planes that can cross the Pacific are generally not laying around and if there is a 4 day delay they are probably sending in a part.

Let the pilot decide when it is safe for the crew AND your iMac to take off. The good news is that you can ask for a refund of any 2nd day charges you paid and put that money towards more memory . . .

Otherwise, go watch Cast Away and see what will happen to your iMac and Fed Ex Jet ;)

Definitely agree with the 'wait' start of things. You can't pull over onto cloud nine and fix anything in the air, things go bad even Scotty can't help you

Ordered 8/31 3:05 AM PST
20"/160/512*/AE/BTwirelessKB

And still waiting for a notice.

Day off, so routine consists of:
1. Check Apple.com. No change from 9/30 or before.
2. Check credit card transaction details. No new charges.
3. Check email. No notification of shipping.
4. Get more coffee. Goto front door. Open it. Look out wistfully at empty front porch. Sigh.
5. Return to Sony Vaio laptop (I want out of PC world!). Repeat steps 1-4.

*512 ordered, 1 G shows up, call to make change (little voice says don't), order slipped one day. Someone else had this problem, too.

Same situation. Only differences are:

5. Look at my AppleCare pack that I received this AM and say to myself "I asked for all items to be delivered at the same time; the 20in iMac has to be minutes away from shipping...."
6. Try to convince myself that internal BT and 250GB HD will be worth the wait vs. 5 minutes going to the local Apple store and getting a stock iMac 20in...
7. Return to my PC laptop (I want out of PC world!). Repeat steps 1-6 above.

... and the fact that I don't "constrain" myself to this routine just on my day off...

Very happy with my new iMac

It's really fast, very quite and the speakers are pretty good for AIO. Screen could be a little brighter and white/bezel on bottom of screen should be a little smaller. Other than that very happy with my purchase!

Did you get a shipping email from Apple or did you call them to find out that yours was on that pallet? I also ordered a 17" BTO (on Aug. 31st) and am wondering if it's on that stuck shipment too.

However, I have yet to receive a shipping confirmation email from Apple; order status still says "on or before 9/30."

Kind of silly

After missing the ups guy 2 times (the applecare warranty) I called and asked them to send it to my work . I was frustrated because I sat here 6 hours on the estimated 3rd try and tried to listen for the door only to still miss him!
So they sent it to my work.
That worked so well I tried to have my G5 (9/30) come to my work.
They said they couldn't change it (via 1 800 my apple) because of the contract they had with ups (chance of thieft). I can understand that but he said after 3 tries and misses it goes back and THEN they would take a new address!
What a waste of manpower!

Someone tore apart the G5 and posted pictures, even ripped the heat sink off.

Ouch, Braver than me.

Actually, the whole back detaches (intentionally) after you un-screw three screws which hold it in place. My power cord wouldn't plug in all the way so I looked in the manual to see if I could access that part. To put ram and airport cards in, one can just lift the whole back off. I was a little surprised to find that everything is right there: processor, motherboard etc., and not in a little isolated section specifically made for ram and the like. Seeing as they crammed everything into a 2 inch form factor, it makes sense they couldn't afford little separate sections. It opens up quite a few more options for self repair and upgrade. I'm not sure if you have access to the hard drive but I'm sure it's not that far off...(though I wouldn't risk upgrade)

This is sooo stupid. Would it really be that hard to move them onto a different jet instead of just letting them sit for a week? At least they will be going to Indianapolis which should mean they get to Chicago quick. That is, unless the truck breaks down and they just leave them there for a month or two.

Yeah they will, 2 iPods now from Shanghai. Both were next day delivery.

I'm not upset at all with Fedex fixing their plane. I just don't like getting 5 different answers to the same question. I'm getting the idea when FedEx says Apple requested a hold for 2 days, they TOLD Apple they would have to wait 2 days.

I used to work for AMEX in the UK and we had a similar policy with the courier service we used for delivering cards. We could not change the delivery address, but the customer could direct with the courier service, BUT only after they had tried to deliver to the home address first - even if they knew no one would be there!

I never understood that!

Seeing the fans in those pics makes me wonder: sure, the early reviews are that the iMacs are super-quiet TODAY, but do you think they'll get noisier in 3 years?

my recomendation is buy a can of compressed air, and blow the dust out from them every 6 months (keeps the bearings clean) should keep them quiet :)

I'm not worried about that. I will sell it and get a new before I need to worry.

Good idea!

I plan to keep it 4.5 - 5 years. My iMac 333 is almost 5.5 years old.

Those fans have been used for some time in the IBM Thinkpad line, not sure if they're the same as the powerbook line. Pretty efficient/long life design.

I received a shipping conformation and invoice from Apple on the 14th. I used the waybill # that was on my invoice to find that it was one of the 430 (at the time I could use the number to see all 430 pieces, now it just shows it as one shippent). The number is 671002317360.

Hope this helps.
