Repetitive Motion Injuries

Ordered 8/31 3:05 AM PST
20"/160/512*/AE/BTwirelessKB

And still waiting for a notice.

Day off, so routine consists of:
1. Check Apple.com. No change from 9/30 or before.
2. Check credit card transaction details. No new charges.
3. Check email. No notification of shipping.
4. Get more coffee. Goto front door. Open it. Look out wistfully at empty front porch. Sigh.
5. Return to Sony Vaio laptop (I want out of PC world!). Repeat steps 1-4.

*512 ordered, 1 G shows up, call to make change (little voice says don't), order slipped one day. Someone else had this problem, too.

The majority of shipments that come via FedEx come through Memphis. This is their main hub, if you are the west coast it could come through Oakland.

According to Fedex, my 17" (BTO) w/512 left Shanghai China on 9/15, went to Anchorage, AK, then left Shaghai again (misprint?), then went to Indianapolis, IN, then to Portland, OR - which is where it will depart for shipment to me, probably today.

ALL within 2 days. I guess I don't track packages often enough, cuz that is just funking amazing to me.

I ordered Sept 3, the iMac was listed as shipping "on or before Oct. 5th", until Sept 15, which is when I got an email from Apple telling me it was on it's way.

That's fast enough to have me wondering if they remembered to remove the "floor model" sticker! :D

That may be a international date thing. Mine left Shanghai at 9:58pm the other day, but crossing the date line it arrived in Anchorage the same day at 1:00 p.m. so when FedEx's application ordered the date/times, it put them not in location date order but regular time order.

Did that make sense? To recap, it didn't go back to Shanghai, just a weird quirk w/ FedEx's trackin software and it's ability to order dates and times correctly.

Some quick notes

E-mail notice: My previous orders from China have had the e-mails sent at like 2:30 AM (Central time in the US). I used to check all day until I found out that they send e-mails based on the time in China.

Waiting worth it? I'm waiting simply because I wanted the larger hard drive (250 on 20") and the BT. The BT can be handled with a dongle (taking up a USB slot) but the HD is the key for me.

BTO: This is starting to look like the key for a faster delivery on the 20" as other people have their 20" without BT. (Anyone get a 20" with BT? When did you order?) Since it is welded to the MB I'm betting that there will be a batch run at the plant and we'll all get shipment notifications at once.

Current delivery time. Talked to an Apple salesman (educ branch) and he said that the iMacs were going through the production line faster than anticipated. It sounds like the line is ramped to full speed and that they are getting through the backorders fairly fast - except for my 20" with BT. I have a feeling that a new BTO will be OK in the near term, but that it will change as people start seeing the new iMac in the stores. If you want a BTO for a large HD it's a good time to order.

Just got a 20" in WestChester

I know I'm going to make all of you jealous, but I just went into the Apple Store in WestChester last night, hoping to be able to try a demo model of the 17", and not expecting to be able to get a 20" until the end of the month, but when I asked the guy, they had just gotten a bunch in stock. I bought a 20" last night, ordered two sticks of 512MB RAM from NewEgg, and it is up and running!

My thoughts: This computer is OK, but performance really sucks with only 256 MB of RAM. I can't wait until I get my additional memory. Also, performance really blows if you have Energy Saver set to "Automatic" processor performance. I was playing with GarageBand, and everything was completely choppy and performance was terrible until I set it to "Highest". Also, simple operations like dragging windows around on the screen were stuttering until I made this setting change. Methinks there will be some bug fixes and performance improvements in 10.3.6 for the iMac line, because I don't think it's getting the kind of performance it should right now. The thing is dead silent though, and doesn't put out much heat at all. The design is killer, and the single slit vent on the back is a great idea for releasing heat.

All in all, it's a great computer, it just needs more memory. I feel sorry for all of you that purchased BTO online, since you probably won't get yours for another two weeks... Oh well, if you need Bluetooth internal, I could see why you might want to do that.

So I have no idea whether or not to go with a stock 20" at my local Apple Store or sit and wait it out. The stock config won't have Bluetooth, the wireless keyboard/mouse and the 250 GB drive I ordered, but I could have it today.

Wonder how patient I should be :)

As if that's not the only thing, I'm still stuck on trying to figure out whether or not I should get two matching sticks of 512 MB or one 1 GB stick. Wonder how the performance will differ between a matched pair and a mismatched pair.

"On or before 10/01"

I've seen the pictures of the iMac with keyboard & cables, I'll wait for the BT module/keyboard thanks ;)

Plus the 250GB drive is the kicker. When you have a 40GB iPod you have the urge to 'fill it' and since i've yet to figure out a way to do that without having my systems hard drive have 40GB occupied, I guess I need the extra space. I'll fill it for sure with digital pictures/movies.

So instead I'll foam at the mouth every day it doesn't ship as I stare at my Applecare box I got yesterday & the 4 boxes of DVD-Rs

Welcome to fun with the international dateline. FedEx reports based on local time, and coming from China to Alaska you arrive earlier in the day than you left. It's kinda amusing to watch how the system handles it. One time I had something delivered before it left.

ok, no iMac 20" BTO is shipped until now, am I wrong? hopefully they start shipping on Monday

Do you mean no iMac 20" BT? Then that would be correct as far as I can tell. But a good many people have gotten their 20" BTO already (BTO= built to order, BT= bluetooth). :)

I hope they start shipping on Monday too!

For those still stuck in China since Tuesday, I called FedEx again this morning as soon as they opened and they called Shanghai. Apple has called in another 2 day hold on the shipment, which should expire Saturday, they do not know why they've had 2 holds put on them. But they are sitting at the FedEx dock, not the Apple facility.

Wow, this really sucks. The bright side is that my computer gets an extended vacation in beautiful Shanghai. What do you think this is anyway? Apple trying to decide whether or not they're going to replace a bunch of defective LCD's? Why are the rest coming out so quick?
If it takes an hour for your soup to come out of the kitchen at a restaurant, it's not because that's how long it takes to warm up soup- it is because somebody screwed something up.

I was actually thinking the same thing. It seems like all the ones that are stuck are 20" models, right? And BigEvan23 reported that every 20" iMac he saw had an unusually large number of dead/stuck pixels. So maybe Apple is replacing a lot of the screens because they realized they got a bad batch of displays.

The bad part is they are already shipped. So while the stores around here have 20" in stock, you can't cancel your order nearly as easy as if it hadn't shipped.

I tried asking Apple this morning if they knew why, all I got was "we have till the 24th before it's late"

this is getting seriously funny. I just had a long phone call with Apple. They claim FedEx is having mechanical problems with the aircraft- for four days!? Wouldn't they just move them to another gosh darn jet?? Everyone's got a different excuse. Maybe they're just lost.

Oh, well in that case if you scroll back through the thread you will see that members have listed their 20" BTOs as being shipped. :)

Anyone in the Uk got shipment yet?? My 20" BT + Keyboard and mouse is still 'open' on the order status page and on or before October 5th hopefully.... soon

This from Insanely Great Macs today:

I don't know how true that story is. I live in Canada order a 20" iMac w/1 gig of ram on August 31 through Apple Canada. I receive notice that it was ship on Sept. 14 and receive it today. 1 iMac is no pallet. So much for the story.

You seem to have the iMac waiting pattern down to a science. At least your wait is less than those purchasing a 2.5 G5, some conciliation.

How many have received a 20" with BT? If any, when did you order it?

I think that the 20" with BT is the one that is going to go the slowest out the door. Hopefully isn't not because Apple found a problem during QA testing.
