If you go to the online Apple Store (AUS) now and set-up the custom config I ordered it says shipping in 2-4 days!!! That's great seeing as though I've been waiting since 31/8.

If you select the base 20 inch it says 2-3 weeks?!?!?

Can't figure it out. Could be a mistake or maybe there are a few too many BTOs on that ship.

i can hardly believe it. but you know what is really funny? the 20" stock will take 2-3 weeks, add any bto to it. BT, AP or 1gb of ram and suddenly it's only 2-3 days.

blows my mind.

Attention US Readers: This post may contain scarcasm

I ordering on the 8/31 with a delivery estimate of 10/5.

On 10/8 I get a delay E-mail pushing back to 10/15

Then on 10/15 another delay to 10/22 (at least the delay E-mails are now going out on time).

Apple store people are nice but fundamentally clueless and powerless to do anything. One even informs me that my 'G5' will be made in Cork !

Anyway, imagine my amazement when I did my daily 'more from boredom than hope' check of the Apple store status page.

Its shipped !

Mind you, I have no E-mail confirmation, the Apple tracking page doesnt work and the reference number isnt recognised by the TNT site.

So I'm relieved to inform you all that Apple are maintaining the impressive record of professionalism they have displayed so far.

You wouldn't expect anything less eh ?

Just Shipped!

Hi!

My Order Status just went to "Shipped" and I also got my Shipping Confirmation. :D

It's an iMac 17" SD + 512 MB RAM instead of 256 + Bluetooth Desktop

I ordered on 10/15.

My former shipping date was 10/13, then I got an eMail saying it will be shipped on 10/19, well and today it shipped.

Does anybody know wether there is a better way to track your iMac (i'm from Germany)?

Christian

Just shipped?

How can you order on 10/15 and say you originally had a 10/13 ship date??

I ordered on 10/4 (20" BTO, BT, AP, 1GB). No update yet. Still "open" with a OOB 11/02.

That doesn't really make sense. Apple just seems to keep surprising us. :D

Strange. Just tried configuring up a 20" iMac with 1 GB RAM, and another 20" iMac with Bluetooth, but otherwise stock; got the same result every time: two to three weeks.

It's been over six weeks now since I ordered my (stock!) 20" iMac. Still waiting. Rang the reseller, and got the same answer: no news. I suggested that he might contact Apple and try to persuade them to sweeten the pot. He gave me his supplier's contact number for me to ring and try to persuade. :D I mean, if they'd shipped on time, that'd be fine -- but they didn't, it's been double the original estimate, and we're still waiting. I'm tipping arrival some time in November.

Sigh. Damnit all to hell and back ...

weird, must have been a weird problem they were having last night. the 'order status' has not been functioning all day long.

just spoke with apple on the phone (again) according to that woman macs are arriving between the 18th and the 22nd and will be allocated as they arrive. as yet, my mac has not been allocated. she said it would be allocated tonight probably and i should expect it friday or monday. wishful thinking sounds to me. but you never know! if they keep talking out their arse eventually it's going to come true.

Stock 20" iMac G5 ships!

Well I finally received the shipping notification from Apple. I purchased a stock 20" on the Apple Canada on-line store as an education customer on August 31. Judging by this forum, I can expect shipping to take between 3 days to 3 weeks from Shanghai, though it will probably be 4-8 days. Now it's off to compulsively clicking the Fedex tracking page.

Hang in there everyone! :)

Patience is what is needed, Mac people need to be a patient lot. If you call Apple it is best to do it with a pleasant firm voice. The ones answering the calls are doing the best that they can. They have no real control over the situation.

Be assured, the wait will be worth it. This machine is -- by far -- the best computer I've ever used or owned.

I'll second that. The thing's incredible. Single best purchase (of any kind) I've made in a long time. Satisfaction level is off the charts, and soaring higher everytime I sit down at the thing and learn a little something more. Wish I'd made the switch to Apple a long time ago.

I was thinking about cancelling my order (after the 2nd delay email). Would've been a huge mistake. Hang in there and I guarantee you'll be ecstatic you did.

Mine arrived yesterday, two days early! Good job, FedEx! :D

Apple...not so good job. :(

No dead pixels but this machine makes an annoying whining noise out of the box. It appears to be fan-related. I've started going the rounds with Apple Tech Support and it doesn't look good. (I have, historically, had really bad luck with Apple Tech Support. Maybe I need to be less nice and more "pissed off customer?")

Oh well, guess I'll start a new thread on the noise issue.

Why's it so hard!

So I ordered my iMac 1.6 Combo / AE / 512 / 80GB a few weeks ago on the online Education store and it hasn't shipped yet. So it occurred to me that I could just call down to the local Apple store here to see if they have any in stock.

so I called the local store, explain that I have placed an online order, and sure enough they have my iMac in stock! They said it shouldn't be a problem to cancel my online order and buy it locally, so they put an iMac on hold for me and transfer my call to the online store so I can cancel my order there. The woman on the online store said she could cancel it no problem, but then I wouldn't qualify for the $99 printer rebate offer since the printer and computer wouldn't be on the same receipt. So I ask her to just keep the order.

Then I call back down to the local store to have them take the iMac off hold. The woman at the local store says that I can just return the printer to them and they will sell me a new printer with my new iMac so it will all be on the same receipt. Woohoo! So I call the online store back to once again cancel the order. The guy says, "sure, I can do that, but if you keep your online order I will give you an additional $50 off". AAH!

So I said sure, let's keep it on the online store. Then I called the local store back to see if they would match that, but they said they can't give any discounts beyond the education price :(. I was so so so so so close to getting my iMac tonight. And now I still have to wait for the one to come from china. Supposed to ship on the 26th of October.

I'm in so much pain. Why must they give me $50... I wanted it now... but can't pass up the $50 off. AAAAGH

Don, check out :

http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@144.STGwaaamzP2.3@.689b1277

Some folks have had replacement PSUs sent to them that reduced the noise, others had Midplane Assemblies sent to them.

My own experience is that the unit's noise level varies from nothing to a barely audible (I believe one fan on) hum to a louder hum, corresponding to ambient room temerature. At or below 75 F, no fan. 75F to 78F one fan. Somewhere around 80 F, more than one fan.

However, the noise of one or even more fans is not annoying, and I don't even think about it, until I read a post where someone says it is too loud.

Oh, I realise this. You catch a lot more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. :D This is a case of "nothing ventured, nothing gained"; in the worst case, I get a stock 20" iMac. In the best case, I get a stock 20" iMac plus a sweetener. :p Either way, I'm still happy. Mostly. :D

At this rate, the odds are good that I'll get my new iMac around the same time that I move into my new home (although I'm yet to actually put an offer in on the latter ;)) ... would be a nice house warming present to myself. :p

Tempted by new PowerMac

I spent the day wondering if I should cancel the order for the 20" iMac and get that brand new - and in stock! - PowerMac instead. I'm sure I could make do with my CRT monitor until I could afford a nice 20" Apple display...

In the end though, I think I've decided that the iMac is better value. So I'll at least wait and see if the OOB date (10/22) happens..

Hi,

Still no shipping notice despite earlier promises.... Received an email today from Apple telling me that "all" iMacs are scheduled to ship by 23 October 2004. Not sure if that is from overseas or Sydney. They didn't tell me.

However, a friend of mine actually received his today. Yes delivered! He ordered stock 17 through a reseller. Still, first actual iMac I've heard of being delivered in Australia that wasn't a store demo version.

They must be here soon!

Hey, good for you. $50 is not bad..

But from a business point of view this is insane. Apple has its different retail branches bidding against one another for the same sale !

There'll be some excrement flying if/when the bosses hear about this....

i think i would have passed up the $50 to get the mac tonight... i ordered my 20" on oct 7 and i'm hoping i get it in the time i was told (3-4weeks) but from what i've read here and on the apple website forum, i could be waiting longer. It hasn't even shipped yet.

I switched and ordered my 20" iMac /BT/Wirless/1GB/250HDD on the 8th September and it shipped (after 3 "sorry but we will have to revise your shipping date" emails) on the 18th October.

Any idea how the tracking numbers work on the TNT website? The numbers given by Apple (I've tried them all) don't bring anything up when trying to track a parcel being sent to the UK from overseas.

I'll just have to wait............ (I've taken 2 weeks off work now though :) )

Well, I'm going to go to my Apple reseller and play on the iMacs if I can't have mine!

I ordered September 27th. (20", BT...)
