I ordered a 20" BTO 9/22, using the Apple Credit offer - which effectively meant I signed up for a credit card. Initially the available credit went down, then in a few days, back to the full 4 grand. It's still at that limit today, and today was my OOB date. The order is still marked as "open", rather disappointingly.

What happens when the OOB date is passed? Do Apple email a "oops, here's a new OOB" the next day? or next week? or what?

I want my iMac! Don't make me snap and rush off to my local Apple Store and get a 1.8Ghz PowerMac, I'd rather have an iMac...

90 pages

My 20" iMac arrived about 3 weeks ago so I haven't checked this thread for a while. Now 90 pages and over 2,200 posts. When it started there were posts that it "might" get to 10 pages!

All I can say is to relax. It's worth the wait - a total joy to use.

An excellent question... It's frustrating that they carry stock in the apple stores while we continue to wait...

Not on my end. I've given up haranguing the vendor; Apple will ship it when they ship it, and he'll call me when he wants my money. (He placed the order and told me to keep my credit card in my wallet -- he'd take the money from me closer to the time.) Might give him a call this time next week if there's still no sign.

Darn. Now I know. They send you an email:

Due to an unexpected supply delay, we are unable to ship the following
item(s) by the date that you were originally quoted:
IMAC20/1.8G5/512/250G/SD/APX/FC/LL
will now ship on or before 10/27/2004

Another week... Must.. stay.. calm.. Using breathing exercises..

Don't hold your breath.

My email said it was to be delivered on or before 22nd (today!) and, as a previous post helpfully pointed out, it's somewhere in the air/on the ground between China and the Moon, awaiting delivery to The Netherlands. I think that date given is the date that it will be forwarded on to the regional carrier?

Anyway, in a few months time, we'll all look back and laugh at this..........oh the fun we had.........

Finally my Imac G5 order on 31 Aug is coming :) I hope the shipping will be faster :) I am from The Netherlands

I'm sorry to hear about your delay again. It will all be forgotten when your iMac arrives. Sounds as though you have the proper technique for waiting down pat. :D

just phoned Apple Store UK, as my 3rd OOB date is today,
ME : "can i have a order update please ?"

Apple: "yes, (long pause) have you been getting delay email sir"

ME : "yes, 3 now, today is the last On or before date"

Apple: "i can't see anything new happed with your order, (long pause) oh wait a minute, yes there is a job number attached now, it will be shipping within 24 hours, it will then take 3-5 working day to get to TNT then a further 5-7 working days to get to you"

ME: "great, so you are sure it will ship withing 24 hours ?"

Apple: "YES, definately, Sir"

ME: "Thanks for your help. good bye"

Apple: "good bye Sir"

I HUNG UP

I then check Apple Store UK Web page update it still says "OPEN"

does this sound strange to you ?

and i have had no emails since the last delay email last week

It will say open until you (presumably) sign for it, then it will be complete.

Mine is in Europe somewhere now and the order is still "Open".

I'm glad that everyone who received their new iMac keeps posting here that it is worth the wait, because right now, this waiting is painful!

Sorry to dissapoint, but if it still says OPEN then it hasnt shipped.

It will change to SHIPPED for a while before you actually get it.

I saw the status change on the Apple Store page about an hour before I got a 'confirmation of shipping' E-mail from Apple.

Since then it spent 5 days in China psyching itself up to make the flight and now seems to have landed in Luxenburg today.

Monday then all being well.

After ordering (and transfering the money) on the 31st August its about time.

Those who ordered in September can have some sympathy AFTER mine arrives... :)

Hi

I checked the online status and it says "flight booked on 10-27" does this means my iMac will be shipped on 27 Oct? Hope it will be sooner :)

Sorry I forgot it changed to Shipped from Open when Shipped.

Seems like mine is in the same batch as yours.

Not sure if this item will actually leave or not, but received notice that my 17" BTO IMAC G5 1.8 with BT, Extra Ram, and AE placed on 10/16 shipped yesterday.

17, 1.8, 512, BT keyboard & mouse, Airport - to UK

Ordered 23 Sept
Left factory 14 Oct
Left Shanghai 17 Oct
Arrived at local [Northampton] TNT distribution centre at 15:00 today - Friday.

But it won't get unloaded from the cage on the truck until Sunday night ready to go out to me Monday morning.

The depot is open now, and tomorrow. But I can't go and collect it until it is taken out of the cage and sorted.

Frustrating or what ...

Couldn't wait any longer..

After posting that last whinge, I phoned my local Apple store in Seattle - and guess what, they had the 20" in stock. I decided that I could live without the BTO options (extra memory, 250Gb drive) and cancelled my online order. I rushed off to the store and now have a GORGEOUS 20" iMac on my desk. The Apple store also does the $99 Final Cut Express deal - it comes in the retail box obviously - so I'm very happy.

It took me a total of 12 minutes to open up the box, install an Airport Express card and 512Mb of memory from Crucial, and set it up to transfer apps and data from my PowerBook. And that included running down to the basement to find the philips screwdriver.

One trip to the pizza place later, and my new iMac was done and.. well it hung on the network set up. Whoops.. But once reset, it works fine. Crazy to see the exact same desktop (albeit with a larger screen) on the new iMac. The new iMac feels heavy and oozes quality. Very quiet too. Can't see any dodgey pixels. Speakers are nice (was the set-up music Moby, Air or Royskop? I've heard it before! Heck, it's in my iTunes library somewhere, I just know it - there needs to be an option to hum into iTunes and let it find what you meant).

It's currently download software updates (the network did become set up correctly afterall, the wizard just hung for some reason), and looks fabulous. I'm very chuffed. (Hint - if you have a non-Airport access point, you need to precede your hex key with a $ symbol).

So the moral of the story is that if you are still waiting for your iMac, it might be worth while phoning your local Apple Store! Oh, the online store didn't offer me $50 not to cancel...

One question: does the iSight come with a nice way of mounting on the new iMac? There is no way I'm using the self-adhesive disk on this beauty.

Edit: I think the set-up music is Eple by Roysksopp, from Melody AM...?

Battery icon, top right

Is it normal to have a battery indicator in the top right of the display next to the time, or did this get carried over when I copied settings from my PowerBook?

Sometimes there are advantages to living here in the US.. even if a can of Heinz Beanz cost me $1.70, and a Chunky KitKat was over $2!

Oh, I missed out the best part. After 'phoning the store and getting them to hold their last 20" until I drove the 30 minutes there, I cancelled the online order (my luck would have it go through and I'd end up with two). But when I got to the Apple store, and then waited 20 minutes to speak to someone (thanks for cutting in front of me, you tall bald git with a blue jacket) they denied that I had spoken to anyone and that they had put one on hold for me.

I think they then took one look at my face and decided that before I went Celtic Warrior King on their asses, they might reconsider that move.. heh heh.. They managed to find another one out the back.

The 20" iMac is most definitely is a fine computer. I was so excited to get it all set up, I didn't even stop to take pictures. And I was probably quite rude to the sales dude in the Apple Store, who seemed to be under the impression I was an undecided customer that he had to work in order to sell the system to. I was going "just give it to me now give it to me now" in my head, while he was asking me what sort of things I needed a computer to do. Shesh. And no, really, you don't have to ask me three times, I KNOW how to install an Airport card. I clearly look like some kind of moron, but I've a masters degree in electronics, ok? Just give me the damn computer. No, i don't need to pay $99 for your in-store Pro Service thing, because again, I can actually work a screwdriver enough to install RAM. Now hand me the computer and no-one will get hurt.. Thank you.

So yes, it doesn't help anyone else, it is worth the wait. Really.
