long live bill gates

Oh, he's crying all the way to the bank.

I'm not a touch screen person. Light pen (remember those), I loved.

As for the HP? I couldn't bear the thought of the amount of screen cleaner i'd need to read the screen on this puppy!

Mac-killer? Version 1.00.02.

anyone else cringe when the see the term (insert apple product here) killer?

cuz when companies launch a product labelled as so all that comes to mind personally is "gee a product that borrows an apples form factor, and looky there, windows, no thanks.":apple:

All this killer talk has me wondering how you could kill an imac. Is there anything that isnt an imac killer? They sell so badly that pretty much every machine released by dell and HP is an "imac killer". Isnt the "_____ killer" scenerio reserved for the top selling stuff?

IF people do not buy macs for their design (as was mentioned in an earlier post) why not just order the replacement parts or guts and hot glue 'em to a shingle? You could sell like a bajillion of 'em by in the morning! Tack one up anywhere! OR, you could pot them in epoxy and have the first submersible one peice mac. I guess that could shed light on the REAL origin of Aqua! Perhaps just press the enclosure out of a block of material derived from 100% post consumer waste -- and make it edible too. The flavor could be changed with a click of your mighty mouse. Please forgive the unaviodable twist on the old soylent green concept. I love the design of every mac, and I've even got a couple of them around to prove it.

Correct, people don't buy the iMac for design, they buy it for the operating system, the iMac is the primary consumer OS X running desktop. If the "HP TouchSmart IQ506" ran Mac OS X then perhaps it might stand a chance, but not a lot of us really want touch screens on desktops... too much work involved with actively using the computer... outstretched arms and all.

Absolutely correct. I can't imagine having to untuck my arms and reach towards the monitor (seriosly hehe). No really, what you said about OS X is true. Sure, if the HP was running OSX, then perhaps it would be threatening, but honestly, I don't think anything Microsoft will be threatening to Apple.

Interesting concept.

Unfortunately, it is not multi-touch. It has a similar UI, but not multi-touch.

I would imagine that we will be seeing multi-touch types in the near future.

For now, the iMac seems better. HP quality is not the best these days.

-- and to stainless -- Why, do you think, Apples' laptop line is the first choice for college students, and Apple marketshare continues to climb? Explain to us the basis of your claim that they sell so badly (poorly).

Notice how I didnt say macbooks? I singled out the imac, none of their desktops sell well, which makes it hard for anything to have an "imac killer" label.

by which standards do their desktops not sell well?
if your comparing it to windows machines thats completely unfair seeing as windows doesnt make a desktop.

Watching the demo video here, I actually think it doesn't look that bad. It does look pretty cool, but it's obvious they hadn't gotten it quite there yet.

I wouldn't buy one, and definitely wouldn't get this over the iMac, but it doesn't seem like a horrible product.
