I think it doesn't look half-bad.
Can't run OSX, and Touch Screen is more of a gimmick but still looks great, and would still have that "Wow" factor that some people look for.

Nah... not an iMac killer. Even if I was running only Windows, I'd still rather do it on the iMac.

Though I gotta say that the new Voodoo Omen kind of beats Apple at their own game in terms of sleek industrial design. While I'm not too fond of the stupid tribal logo on the side, the case design itself is sweet and I have a feeling that Johnny Ive had something like this on his drawing table for the next Mac Pro, and that he's cursing a lot right now.

You can say whatever you want but if that had been an Apple logo on the side, y'all would be touching yourselves...

I have an imac and love it. I just wish it was touchscreen. This thing could be amazing running my house.

I used to run a website for a firm who sold such a computer. They were pretty smart too, sure they weren't as pretty as an iMac and only had a 4:3 display but they worked very well.

yeah the omen looks amazing. vodoo and hp look like they are really trying to copy alot of apples design. Have you guys seen vodoo page on youtube???? Check it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watching the demo video here, I actually think it doesn't look that bad. It does look pretty cool, but it's obvious they hadn't gotten it quite there yet.

I wouldn't buy one, and definitely wouldn't get this over the iMac, but it doesn't seem like a horrible product.

HHHmmm, looks like a.... Giant iPod Touch!

Thats kind of sweet looking, but not something Apple or Johnny would design.

Looks more like a poor copy of a Mac Pro. A little unstable looking as well.

In Canada, these touch screen HP's have been out for ages. They are in almost every London Drugs store and FutureShop and I have played around with them a few times while visiting for something else.

They *look* really cool, and the build quality seems fine to me, but the touch-screen is "iffy." It works about as well as a giant version of a WinMobile touchscreen, which is to say you have to poke several times to get it to recognise your fingers a lot of the time, or it's accuracy is off a bit.

The biggest problem I had with them is that the interface, (while it looks really cool in a product shot) is just "different." By that I mean it doesn't look or work anything like Windows or Mac. So you see a lot of people poking at it with confused looks on their faces. They smile, because hey, who doesn't like poking around with a touch-screen, but ultimately they walk away.

IMO the only way touch will catch on is with a standardised interface, which is exactly what Apple is trying to do. All these other touch machines will always have to use different metaphors and such due to copyright and trademark issues and that is their real achilles heel.

The rise of Windows taught us all that no one really wants to learn multiple OS metaphors. This is the same. No one really wants to learn how to operate a "Windows touch" machine versus a "Mac Touch machine." If it's going to be touch it's the first one to come up with the "standard interface", and we already know who that is. ;)

I'm a recent switcher, and no fanboy. So I think I can give a reasonable comparison. I do have hands-on experience with the earlier touchsmart machine.

1) it still runs vista.
In most cases this works against it.
2) it still runs vista
In some cases it works for it. Windows Media Center is great. Apple front row, while pretty is very limited. No support for live TV. In contrast media center supports live TV and includes dvr capability. Finally, a MC Vista machine can distribute HD content to any MC extender (including Xbox360) via any kind of ethernet connection, wired, or wireless.

Touchscreen - for a kitchen type pc. the ability to pull up a calendar or weather without a keyboard is a nice feature.
Also, the touchscreen's use for viewing lists and dragging and dropping is very intuitive.

But . . its still not OSX
I have no doubt that when (if?) apple addopts things like

1) touchscreen
2) built in TV tuner.

that they will be far better implemented than they could ever be in Vista. Even with the cool HP Touchsmart UI on top of it.

How retarded. You reach up to your screen and touch it when you can use a mouse.
As an "oldie" I can tell you that people said pretty much the exact same kind of things when the mouse first came out. (Paraphrased) as far as I can remember the argument was like this:

"Why take your hands off the keyboard and reach for a mouse, position the mouse, click the mouse and then put your fingers back on the keyboard when you can just use the keyboard?"

.

The iMac killer is...

...a headless iMac.

On a more serious note, Apple I love Windows Media Center and tuners are cheap for it. Why can't you do it? I never use Front Row.

The imac killer is a headless mac. i agree. will it ever happen? When will the imac be touchscreen? Does osx have touchscreen built in like vista?

Do you guys really want to be touching all over your monitor? I know I dont. Touch screens are not new to windows machines (I believe it was gateway or sony who had one in bestbuy stores) and they werent all that great.

Also, for HP I really dont know what happened to them! A few years ago they were great, especially when I bought my laptop off of them, then last oct I bought a laptop from them and it was horrible! So was everyone elses I knew who had one. They really took a tumble. That laptop is the reason I own a mac today though so there is always a happy ending :)

hp is doing great things. They have more patents then apple. I also love there approach with the blackbird and vodoo. The hp slimline and the mini note are amazing. They just need to get up there build quality and get osx and i bet everyone here will switch.

Um, no. That's your wishful thinking talking. The defined rectangular shape looks a lot more modern and sophisticated than the curvy Mac Pro.

The Mac Pro enclosure is now 5 years old and starting to look outdated, probably because it's little more than a metal version of the Quicksilver G4 which in turn was a pimped version of the old turqoise G3 / graphite G4 plastic blob, dating back to the late 90's.

But don't fret, Apple can't be the leader all the time, I'm sure they will catch up eventually.

Anyone who has extensive experience of opening up and working within both of these cases will recognise your statement as the arrant nonsense it is.

We are talking about the exterior design, not the damn interior. I know perfectly well that the cable-free innards of a Mac Pro are eye-candy for DIY:ers, but the exterior still looks outdated. Those rounded shapes are like a hillbilly mullet to the eyes of a hair designer.

Apple used to refresh their designs very often (as they still do when it comes to iPods -- 3 Nanos in 3 years), now we're looking at a 5 year old Mac Pro/PMG5, a 3½ year old Mac Mini and a 5 year old MBP/PBG4. If it weren't for the alu iMac and the MBA I'd be tempted to believe that they're phasing out computers altogether.

The Mac Pro is not about solely how it looks, the people that use it don't care about modern design in their workstation, they want power, and on that the Mac Pro delivers. The Mac Pro is designed around air flow, so if you think a solid sheet of metal allows more air to cool the computer than one with numerous holes in it, you are wrong. Certainly Apple isn't going to build an ugly computer (like that silver brick above), but they aren't going to build one that isn't up the their standards of performance for professionals. Apple puts a lot of time into an efficient design, and the reason they don't change too often is that there isn't much to improve upon in the design. Quite honestly, I can't picture what would replace the current Mac Pro case or the MacBook Pro's case... I can't think of much to improve upon.
