touch interface clunky??

Imagine a 20 inch diagonal with the interface of an ipod touch.

It would be fantastic. A 2 year old could use it, as could grandma.

As stated before -
Apple could use a touchscreen for a home type machine
Apple should upgrade frontrow to be something useful. Win MC is superior.

In almost all other ways osX is superior. Thats why these omissions are so glaring.
I can see how a tablet-type touchscreen might be useful, but when you're saying 20" you're talking about some sort of iMac Touch, right? Sounds like an ergonomic nightmare to me. You don't think your arms will go numb if you're leaning over a desktop for 8 hours straight to manipulate stuff on an iMac screen? Cool gimmick, but useless...

Exactly. Face your left palm upwards and tap on it with your right index finger. It feels natural.

Now stick your right arm up and tap on your screen - a vertical surface. It feels awful.

Touch screen is for small palm held devices and pub quiz machines.

Good lord, this forum seems to have been infested with uber mac fanbois, not surprising for a mac forum but hey, worth a mention.

Well first of all the title is a little tired, sensational and contrived but the attention should surely be on the device itself. The HP IQ506 is a cool computer and I am seriously considering this as a kitchen computer myself.

I respect the comments of IJ Reilly seeing as he has something interesting to say on the subject but the majority of the comments on this subject have been poor attempts at witty remarks that come across as mac elitism. I think it's fair to say that everyone here fully understands that Mac OS X has not been ported to HP's line of computers and as kind as it is to inform us all of this, we really don't need this pointed out repeatedly.

This forum is fast becoming a place for mac users to laugh-off any attempts of the PC manufacturers to make something they would ever consider using, regardless of their merit. I notice that a large percentage are still talking about the old adage of the "long-term usability of touch screens", which is fair enough, provided that when Apple inevitably launches the touch imac, those that poo-poo'd the concept of the touch-screen do not herald the new mac version as 'the second coming'.

This HP does a lot of things that an iMac doesn't, such as offering a built in TV tuner, a good media centre in MS MC, a (relatively) good design, good looking software in the touchsmart software of which this is the second version and of course the multi-touch style touch-screen itself. Now that's not to say it is a better machine, if Apple launched a touch-screen iMac, I would choose that over this of course due to my own preference for OS X but thats not to say this is not a worthy opponent.

As IJ Reilly has already said, it's great that manufacturers keep trying to better the iMac as it gets some healthy competition going (not that that has ever really bothered Jobs & co, still not offering TV tuners in any of their products).

In fairness there's a lot of hobby horse riding going on in these discussions. One of them takes the form of Apple elitism. The other common theme is that Apple hasn't done anything worthwhile in years and is going straight down the tubes.

I've been away a while :D nothing changes...

i notice how people who dislike apple fans always think they can for some reason predict the future:rolleyes:

I'd love a tablet type of computer that ran OSX on a computer that was around the size of the mac book and that was portable but I would not like a computer the size of an imac that had a touchscreen. It doesn't sound practical. I imagine it would also be very messy. I haven't seen any all in ones on the markets that really take on the iMac. The only one I think comes even close is the Vaio L and while it comes close it is not there yet even if you ignored the lack of OSX

Very well said Elven. After my last experience with HP, I will never use HP again.

You're not the only one. They're like the McDonald's of PCs. Put enough of them out there for cheap and you'll eventually own the market. If you must buy a PC, get a Dell.

I'm a PC "house" with 3 computers currently...

That said, Vista is making me look at macs for my next machine to hold me over until Win7 is out and working well (or it converts me) but after reading this thread...I want my 10 min back...

The best thing about any mac is OS X

Enough Said!!!

+1 Mac OS X FTW!

+1
I haven't got a Mac - yet - but just tried it in German (on holiday) and it's absolutely the reason I'm saving up for a Macbook Pro - the design is just an extra feature. :D

 I wouldn't trade my iMac for that. Not only is it ugly, but it comes with Vista too. :p
Doh...! :p
I'm running Vista now and I've done it in a year and a half - running ok, but the Mac is awesome. (With the "hot corners" and spaces and Exposé. :)

I just picked this up and it is so nice. This is bill gates master creation.

Looks like a nice enough computer. I have no experience with touch screen anything, so from my perspective I'd be dubious about having oily fingerprints all over my monitor. If you could run linux on it and still get the full functionality of the hardware, it might not be so bad...

Tons of pc makers have their "iMac Killer" but the iMac is always better because of OS X. In my personal opinion, I like the dell XPS one. I would buy one if I could get it with OS X. (I wouldn't get near vista with a 10 foot pole.)
Besides, I think apple will come out with a multi-touch screen computer.

Any one see the new HP TouchSmart IQ506 PC. This thing looks nice. What you guys think? Looks like it could be an imac killer!!!

Anything called an "iSomething killer" has lost already. Everyt ime someone tries to make a copy of some Apple product instead of coming up with their own ideas, they fall short because these Apple products are hard to copy even if you completely get them, and most of these copiers don't.
