I strongly disagree. While 16gb of ram is fine for most photographers, 512gb of SSD is simply not enough workable space. I'm a full time professional photographer and even 2TB of SSD space is not enough. 4TB or 8TB is a solid amount of workable space for multiple weddings, events and various photo shoots, not to mention all the 1:1 previews Lightroom generates. 512gb would be an incredible struggle.
512GB SSD is just the base model. If you need to store lots of things locally, you would option up to the larger storage. The nice thing about a desk top is you can expand with external storage easily and more cheaply.

i hope this supports up to 2 additional displays and Apple announces new 27" (or larger) external displays at the same time. crossing fingers ?

will have an interesting decision to make if Apple also updates Mac Mini with M1 Pro or Max processors...

FaceID built into iMac would definitely swing decision that way

If a new iMac comes out in the spring, the it will likely use the same M1 Pro and Max chips from the MBP line. The M1 2xMax and 4xMax chips are going in the Mac Pro and probably will not come out before next fall. Apple could include those in an iMac Pro++ in the fall when they launch the Mac Pro.

Curious, what kind of work are you doing that requires more than the M1 Max? It seems to exceed or match almost anything out there now unless you need something like the Mac Pro for render farms and scientific analysis.

It's more about price than performance for me.

The M1 Max is essentially a $3000 CPU - that's the minimum it is going to cost you for that kind of power (right now).

That's fine for a power laptop, but it's just not competitive at the desktop-level.

I'm personally hoping that Apple understand that and designs the larger iMac to compete in the right sector, and not against its own laptops.

Hi, you've obviously been away for a while. Competitive is never a factor when buying Apple.

No No No NO!
Yes Yes Yes YES!

The implementation of the notch in the new MacBooks Pro is brilliant. Although a larger, thicker desktop monitor would not necessarily need it, I would be all for the notch if it delivers Face ID and the iMac bezels are black, just like the new MacBooks Pro.

If the rumored new iMac sports the M1 Pro or M1 Max CPUs, why wouldn’t it support up to four extra screens, just like the new MacBooks Pro? Did you see the recent Keynote?

Yes, I saw the keynote announcing the new MBPs and I agree with you that a new iMac would / should be able to support multi monitor setups

No, no it's not.
Lots of photographers can do perfectly fine work with 16GB & 512GB storage.

Er, yes it is. Pro photographers shoot RAW and file sizes are massive. Pro video editors definitely need more RAM and storage, so do 3D artists, or people working in CAD, and I assume musicians trying to squeeze hundreds of effects into their multi-track sequences.

Get real: it's 2021. Those base levels of storage are, as I said, pathetic. It's like a laptop from the last decade.

Perhaps what we will see is a 27" Pro and a 32" Max.
Or the iMac being able to support 2 or 4 external monitors like the MBP M Pro vs M Max configurations negates the need of a 32" iMac. Part of the argument against the 32" iMac would be its just a way larger product to ship/stock in Apple stores.

Yup. I have an XDR and 27" Thunderbolt on my 16" Intel. I'd love to replace the 27" with a Retina display, without paying for another XDR Display.

I actually don't think that matters as long as you can offer several in store configurations that take in account anything from a base models to ones that use more capable SoCs with increased RAM and SSD. Example 16" MBP, started with M Pro 16/512 GB SSD but they sell a M Max with 64 GB RAM/ 4 TB SSD configuration you can buy.

a definite issue with Apple's strategy of having everything be unified. i take no particular issue with that on a laptop - it makes perfect sense design-wise.

but desktops do not have the same constraints. does Apple still intend to stick with unified designs for the desktops, even the Mac Pro?

I certainly hope not.

You should not have to pay that kind of money if you do not really need a laptop though. Desktop workstations have to be designed a little better and at reasonable prices.

Well here's hoping it comes with more CPU cores than the current M1 Pro and Max. I have a Z9 incoming and want to beef up from the M1 machine and Xeon machine I have just now to something that can edit 8K 60 and the 45MP RAW's without breaking a sweat. 10 Gbps ethernet is also a must have now. Make is so Apple!
