a definite issue with Apple's strategy of having everything be unified. i take no particular issue with that on a laptop - it makes perfect sense design-wise.

but desktops do not have the same constraints. does Apple still intend to stick with unified designs for the desktops, even the Mac Pro?

I certainly hope not.
I’d bet they’ll do it. Basically that’s one of the main reasons why Apple Silicon gives such ridiculous numbers, so it makes sense for both laptops and desktop.

Yes Yes Yes YES!

The implementation of the notch in the new MacBooks Pro is brilliant. Although a larger, thicker desktop monitor would not necessarily need it, I would be all for the notch if it delivers Face ID and the iMac bezels are black, just like the new MacBooks Pro.

iPad Mini 6 and iPad Pro both fit a 1080p FaceTime camera into a not-quite-as-thin-but-thin bezel... and iPad Pro fits in the full FACE-ID hardware too.

In recent debates about this, a logical argument was that the thinness of the lid of MBpros "forced" Apple to adapt a much "fatter" camera module that could not possibly be positioned as close to the top of the screen as Apple did on iPads. That's not yet proven but at least rational logic in support of notches in MBpro.

There would be no need to make this iMac as thin as a laptop lid... thus Apple should be able to use the exact same camera module they used in those iPads (or iMac 24") and thus fit it all- even Face ID if they desire it- into a notch-less thin iPad-like upper bezel.

iMac has no portability need like a laptop. Other than the "iconic" aesthetic spin that's been flying around, I can't imagine any other technical reason they would have to put a notch in these iMacs. Since the most relevant (size) equivalent (the Pro Monitor is notch-less) it seems that Apple could genuinely go either way here. If "iconic" applies, then the most expensive monitor Apple makes doesn't reflect that kind of Apple thinking/branding/strategy... and neither does the little sibling-but-brand-new iMacs for sale right now either.

Those iPad bezels are only a few millimeters thicker than MBpro bezels. Any arguments for wanting the "extra" screen seems much better suited to be granted with a thinner "chin" which offers room for an abundant amount of "extra" screen if that is important here.

Lastly, the 24" already available is notch-less, has 1080p FaceTime, AND with a significantly thinner bezel than past iMacs... and is an entirely new iMac form factor. Would there be 24" notch-less iMacs for sale with 27"-32" notched ones? I have to think not... but wouldn't be completely surprised either.

No, no it's not.

Er, yes it is. Pro photographers shoot RAW and file sizes are massive. Pro video editors definitely need more RAM and storage, so do 3D artists, or people working in CAD, and I assume musicians trying to squeeze hundreds of effects into their multi-track sequences.

Get real: it's 2021. Those base levels of storage are, as I said, pathetic. It's like a laptop from the last decade.
I’m a pro video editor. I shoot plenty of raw images too. I got the cheap 8GB, 256GB, 7xGPU core MacBook Air earlier this year.

It’s the fastest, best computer I’ve ever had. One of the few systems able to cut through R5/R6 10-bit 422 like butter. Pro’s can use it fine.

Storage isn’t an issue. I have tons of T5/T7 SSDs I edit from. Even with 256GB MacBook storage and all the programs I use installed I have 110GB free. It’s fine. 8GB unified memory works better then the 16GB mac I had before.

More memory and storage would be nice, sure. Are they needed for work? Not at all. it’s a very capable machine and a steal at the £849 new I paid. I got it to tide me over till the new MacBook Pro’s came out but now I think I’ll wait for M2 Air.

What about a 24-inch with black bezels for those who don't like to puke every time they look at their screen but are satisfied with the smaller resolution?

It really depends on how "Pro" this iMac is gonna be.....

With M1Pro it would(should) compare to a lower tier Intel 27" iMac.
With M1Max we are in in upper silver Intel iMac land.
With the rumoured M1DoubleMax it would compare to the last iMacPro
The rumoured M1QuadrupelMax will be exclusive for the MacPro (MacProMini, M-Cube......).
Completely wrong comparison. The M1 Pro compares to a high end iMac Pro in CPU.

My concern is the price, the previous iMac Pro started at $5000. I hope they don't take a similar path with this machine and force us to spend that much just to get an iMac with a 27" screen.

Me too! I getting bit worried over bigger iMac becoming iMac 'Pro'. I want bigger iMac cost same iMac 27 inch like Intel one. I don't want iMac Pro with iMac Pro price. It too much money for me. If Apple don't release bigger iMac that NOT iMac Pro price then I have to think what to do next, get iMac 24 inch or MacBook Pro 14/16......hmmm. I hope there is iMac bigger screen same range/price like iMac 27 inch. I don't care if screen is 27 inch or bigger as long price is same as 27 inch!

You should not have to pay that kind of money if you do not really need a laptop though. Desktop workstations have to be designed a little better and at reasonable prices.
I think we are going to see higher prices unfortunately. A M1 24" iMac with 8/8/16/1TB lists for $2099. The 14" MBP M Pro 10/16 1TB its $2499, 16" MBP same config is $2699. (all list prices)

Rumor sounds too much like based on new MBP specs/prices and configurations. Examples the same ports. Why would you have a HDMI port on a iMac? MBP you can connect to a projector or TV, but iMacs never had one.

HDMI IN? If this iMac is going to have a bigger screen, maybe it doubles as a television/gaming monitor for some?

Also with all this video editing punch of PRO & MAX and HDMI being the default hardware connection, maybe there's a reason to add it to a new iMac too? Testing, proofing, linking to other equipment that doesn't have Thunderbolt/USB-c?

AND perhaps MBpro hardware is mostly simply repackaged into an iMac. If so and it's there, why not include the jack. It would allow multi-monitor people one more connection.

Just speculating and not really believing it either.

Anecdote: I have used Target Display mode countless times on an old iMac that supported it for years. It is a NICE hardware option. HDMI IN could offer a way to make the screen useful for stuff OUTSIDE of the guts of the iMac that may not support Thunderbolt/USB-c connections.

With proper desktop version of the Pro/Max chip or whatever they will call it this has a chance of being an awesome machine.

No interest in a desktop with the power of a laptop. Sorry apple.
this is a valid point, some of these iMac’s need to be more powerful then the current MBPs. i’m talking top of the line fully maxed models. I guess the iMacs won’t be power limited the way the laptops are, but it needs to be more than that and a fancy screen doesn’t cut it especially if they bring back the iMac Pro… that model needs to be a beast that will put a MBP M1 Max to shame….

The pattern of pricing new M-silicon Macs is not supporting your wish here. Anything is possible of course but if I was making bets, I'd be expecting this brand new iMac to be MORE expensive than "equivalent" past iMac configs.

For backup plan, you might want to think about making your own "iMac" with the rumored Mac Mini PRO/MAX and any sized screen of your own choosing. Historically, that would probably cost MORE if you matched key tech specs but I'm less confident that will be true this time. But all can certainly hope.

The new MBP (and also the MBA and standard MBP) are definitely competitive, basically the most powerful laptops at their price points.
Agreed! Most people don’t realize that truly competing Windows laptops like the Razer Blade 15 Advanced cost roughly the same as the M1 Max MBP. The MBA is a steal for the performance you get as it shreds comparable thin and light Windows laptops running Y series or U series chips.

I think some people have lost perspective with the big jump of the MBPs and are still in the Intel mindset, specially those who say the base iMac should have a better processor.

I can understand *some* people need more GPU performance than the M1 Max, but 99% of “Pro” users won’t need more CPU performance. The M1 Pro and Max provide the same CPU performance as the Xeon iMac Pro, consuming much less power (and it also matters in a desktop).

Always a HDMI out on Hubs or MBP's.

Since I've been exploring "next Mac" purchase, I've ventured into the fun adventure of trying to find more than stock ports in a wide variety of third party hubs. In my experience, it is hard to find many/any that don't have at least some reviews describing issues- especially with video connections- with M1 Macs. Even hubs up into the $200-$400 range seem to have at least a few comments about "wonky" behavior connected to M1 Macs.

Again doubting an HDMI jack too but there IS one on MBpro and iMac 27" might repurpose up to the very same board. So I'll consider it a maybe instead of completely dismissing it.

what's the point of HDMI? how many really use a second monitor with an iMac 27? sure there are some but certainly not the majority ...
and 27 would be a disappointment, would have expected 30 ...
I agree, only use would be if Apple sold a monitor nearly identical to the iMac itself. That said, I would love an iMac that had an HDMI input to let you use the thing beyond it’s usual lifespan.

Leaker or guesser? so basically a desktop version of what’s already been released? That proves it’s fabricated.

this is no rumor, but MR got its page views, so…

Seems well beyond "a chance." There's been very little fault gripes at the hardware advancements in the new MBpro. Overwhelmingly, the bulk of the gripes have been notch, perception of "thick" and the (always gripe of) pricing. In LOTS of threads, I haven't seen many griping much at all about the incredible guts.

Agree on using the monitor after its “lifespan”, but Apple won’t give that to us ?
