Remember, the date the iMac is rumored to be released is Aug. 7. There was never any evidence of a new release on July 24.

Oh don't I know it but this wasn't the first "rumored" release date and that is what I was speaking to. I never expected 7/24 and actually I don't expect 8/7 either.

GET THE NEW FRIEKIN IMACS RELEASED MAN!!!!

They aint been touched for goin on 11 months now whilst still charging last years prices for last years technology, really taking the p i double 5 and nothing short of pathetic.

Rant over :)

I hate to tell you, but the iMac is not Apple's main focus right now. Apple's main focus is the iPhone. I assume the iMac is still selling fine so they figure why not squeeze a another month or two out of the current one. I can't say I really blame them. Apple is a corporation and a corporation exists for one reason, to make a profit. I am sure there is a lot more profit to be made in a growing market like smart phones, then in a stagnant market like desktop PC's.

Now with that said, I'd like a new iMac as well, but Apple knows what they are doing to build their company so I will let Steve determine the right time to release it. Personally I'd rather have them wait to release it when 10.5 is available because I would hate to buy a new computer and then in a month or two fork out more cash for an up-to-date OS. Of course, they could also offer a free upgrade program and if the dates are close maybe they will.

I'm starting to doubt it as well after hearing results from the financial conference yesterday...considering how good they are selling, Apple might wait until Leopard...

Of course, I am more confident than ever though that this will be the end to the Laptop Processors in the iMacs...Every revision of the iMac has resulted in new processors right? So, if they are re-doing the design, there is a good chance we will get new chips...hopefully the Intel Core 2 Quad.

Still, above all - they made computers before iPhones. I don't think I would be so impatient if it hadn't been over a year since the last update.

I also heard there are security issues and kinks that still need to be addressed in the new iPhone, but hopefully, that won't split Apple's focus.

AppleInsider is now saying they're coming in September along with new touchscreen iPods.

This sounds right, since the Apple Expo is in September. They'll miss out on the back-to-school rush, though.

Ew. I hope it's wrong, though. The only reason I was holding out on buying a new iMac was because I thought it would come out before. Isn't that an awfully stupid move on Apple's part, seeing as how people are rushing out to buy computers in July/August. By Sept, school's already up and running.

While I like the observation about the AppleExpo (and that does give us probably our latest date, the article says the September QUARTER.

Remember, although Apple just announced their quarterly results, that was for the June quarter. The September quarter is July, August, September, so an Aug 7 date is not ruled out.

That said, what they haven't released by AppleExpo probably isn't coming till January. I hope the iMac comes sooner, as the wheels are falling off of my PC, and I need to replace it with something. If they can't get me an iMac or a MacPro in a reasonable timeframe....

We'd also have to take notice that if they waited until late September to release a new iMac, that means that the September quarter went by with no real product releases. We know that the December quarter will be to pump our holiday sales (Mac OS X, iPods and iPhones) so they still need a strong product showing these few months to maintain the growth they've been experiencing recently. I think iMacs (and other products) are still on track for August.

Hope you are right and if they want ANY part of the college sales it will have to be August 7th at the latest.

Apple is probably already dominating in college sales. Those MacBooks? Yeah, everyone has one. I bet at least half of all laptops on my campus are Macs, and a large part of those are MacBooks and MacBook Pros. They're wildly popular. The easiest way to tell is that everyone's facebook photos have a series of Photobooth shots. In terms of mass sales to schools, my school ordered everything back in June. Conveniently, there were many orders put in for 24" iMacs.

I think this next generation of iMacs will be focused on home consumers anyways. Resurrection of the MacTV if you will. Rumors point to high definition (Blu-Ray) optical drives, something Leopard already has support for. Also, I believe they'll be attacking the gamer market. An iMac for every home, and it'll come in any color you would like - as long as that color is white.

Are college students the only target audience for back-to-school sales?

As a company making £300 million profit a year, they have enough resources to 'focus' on more than one product. Rather than working on the iPhone and then downing tools before moving onto Mac, they'll obviously have a roadmap decided many months ago on how things will pan out. They will have known for months that the iPhone would be released in June and the new Mac lineup in August for example.

Leopard development probably runs in parallel, not tied into any product - it's ready when it's ready.

As for profit, they won't leave large aspects of the business undeveloped. They don't work in such a short term way. That's akin to Ford suddenly only selling pickups because the small family car market has 'stagnated'.

Apple make a lot of profit on Macs - they are not bland PC boxes as sold by Dell - they are a brand sold at a premium and make them a lot of money.

And as for iMacs selling fine - resellers still can't get stock.

If I Recall Correctly...

Apple has in the past released an "update" of an exisiting product (see MacMini) without having a big keynote release...

I think they even did it for an iMac update once (pre-Intel). It seems it has been done a week or so before a keynote event and then at the keynote new software was released.

Anyone else remeber anything like this or was I dreaming?

Also, through out the years, Apple has notoriously had releases after major holiday or back to school shopping events (See iPod Shuffle 1).

NEW Laptops should be release a month before back to school shopping starts. New iPods/iPhones 2 weeks before Thanksgiving...WITH PLENTY OF STOCK ON HAND!!!

Oh, and one more thing...announced and released dates are not always the same (see iPhone).

You can't decide on a day to day basis when you want to release a new computer. You don't want to sit on stockpiles of machines slowly ageing away. Today's killer desktop might be tomorrow's paperweight.
Whenever the iMac is ready, they'll have to ship.

I Was In The Apple Store Today In Oxford Street, London.

And Obviously Asked About The New iMac As I Want One.

But Alot Of The Staff Claimed They Didnt Know There Was Going To Be Any Update.

I Didnt Expect Them To Say Much Anyway.

Will They Come Out In The U.K The Same Time As The U.S?

Do they? I didn't think they were allowed to read MacRumors...

I doubt they read it at work, and they're certainly not to use it as a source when talking to customers. But, I would generally think that Apple employees are usually just users like we are and like to read the latest news, updates and rumors. As far as who knows about updates, it's usually only the team who works on the product and whoever is above them in the chain. From what I've heard, when the original bondi iMac was announced, most of the company never even saw it coming.

:apple: is expecting lower profits because of something to do with a "product transition". Perhaps they are planning a minor update for the imac, followed by a major one with Leopard or Penryn or something. I for one hoper this isn't true because I really want that new aluminum imac that I've been waiting to buy since June. :D

September quarter, not necessarily the month of September.

I noticed that this is an analyst's opinion, and is not based on information from a trusted source. Does that make it more reliable or less reliable than your typical MR source?

As a side note, did anyone notice that the wording from the analyst was that Apple would "finish up a refresh of its entire Mac line-up, rounding it out with a redesigned iMac"? That would mean a refresh of the Mac Pro, Mac Mini (if not discontinued) and possibly xServe.
