Consider the humble scaffolding, which supports the building as it is being constructed, then gets torn down when it is no longer needed.

Apple seems to be going increasingly mobile, so I won't be surprised if they decide to drop their desktop line completely in the near future. Imacs and mac pros may have been integral to building up the apple brand once, but if their time is up, I see no point in keeping them around. It's just the price of progress. :)

I agree, once you have something that can replace them. Currently there isn't. when you can buy a uber fast laptop with 2tb ssd for a lower price I guess its a worth arguing if you can accept having a "stationary laptop" - though its kinda pointless as a ton of people want to have a machine stuck at the desk and not bring it around.

Exactly.
Right now you pay the same price (1199 USD) for a base MBP13 and a base iMac, however with the MBP you get a 5400 rpm hard drive instead of a faster 7200 rpm unit, a shared memory video card instead of a dedicated one, a dual-core i5 instead of a quad-core i5 and a 13-inch 1280x800 screen rather than a 21.5-inch 1920x1080 screen. Even though the MBP has a newer architecture, you're basically trading performance for mobility. And some — many? — of us would rather get performance than mobility... :)

(Here in Italy it's even worse: the MBP13 starts at €1279; the base iMac costs €1158.)

Or both. Desktop for serious work at home or business and ipad or laptop on the go. Share via the cloud. I don't see the big deal.

Back to School promo ends September 21, so I'm assuming it'll be after that. Also solves the problem of conflicting with the September 12th iPhone refresh.

I don't think I could cope with the iMac and iPhone coming out at the same event lol. The iMac alone is £1567 with student discount!

The iPhone 4S on eBay is probably good for £300 I guess :)

Consider the humble scaffolding, which supports the building as it is being constructed, then gets torn down when it is no longer needed.

But that's where the iMac will morph into the rumored Apple TV, with the hardware built into or attached to big screen TVs in the future.

WiFi and BlueTooth connecting laptops and tablets with cloud services for access to your data and NAS at home.

yep they aer budling Mountain lion on the new iMACs which will have the newer i5 or i7 chips which have intel HD 4000, the GPU will be based off NVIDIA 670m GPU with 1GB of video memory. everything else is the same as last refresh.

670M is a rebadged Fermi 580M from last year. No noticeable improvement over the 6970m. Not happening.

2 terrabtyes of SSD?!?

Even if you don't plan to bring your laptop out of your house ever, that portability can still come in handy at times. For instance, if you use airplay to mirror movies onto your HD tv via atv, you may appreciate being able to bring your laptop with you to your sofa.

Or as your mood suits you, you may prefer to work in your bedroom one moment, the kitchen the next, perhaps your study room on a whim one day. OR simply being able to move it easily when you want to pack or clean your workstation. It's true that for the same price, it is rare to find a laptop that can rival a desktop in terms of specs and performance, but for most tasks, it likely comes close enough that many people won't notice or mind the difference. :)

I don't find it pointless, though I concur that it is still up to the individual user as to whether these minor conveniences are worth the extra cash outlay.

Well, my kind of profession you can't really work in the bedroom or kitchen. I use a large drawing tablet and have drawings and stuff around me. I need a desk. And so does musicians and many other types of professions too. 2tb of SSd isn't that far away, you can allready get 768 gb on the rMBP. But an iMac suits me a lot better and I'm sure it does for many.

If I can get an iMac with 1-2 tb of ssd and 32gb of ram I would be very happy. I hope I can upgrade to that when the new one comes out.

Just how much stuff do you think Apple is going to release on the Sept. 12 "media event"-designated date?

iOS6, to be sure.

Most likely a new iPhone.

Most likely new iPods, as they come each September.

Probably an iPad Mini.

If it's a media event then they probably are refreshing iBooks, iTunes U, etc. or something like that.

Highly unlikely they are going to release new Macs, let alone iMacs -- do you think that Apple is going to update their ENTIRE catalog of products in one event?

No. Just no.

If you guys need/want an iMac, then go buy an iMac and move on with your lives!

It's really not that world-ending and the current iMac is nothing at all to sneeze at!

Really!

So I'm sure a lot of you have heard by now. There's going to be a sep 12 apple event and it was confirmed by all things D here : http://allthingsd.com/20120730/apple-stocks-up-on-components-for-fall-product-launch/
when all things D reports it, it's pretty ,much a confirmation. Since we also had rumors earlier regarding the iMac to be release in the fall by Kou here: https://www.macrumors.com/2012/07/2...ed-imacs-reportedly-due-in-september-october/
Is it safe to assume we'll see our beloved 2012 iMac in that event ? I know its illogical for apple to release iOS devices with macs but apple hasn't been working logically lately. So I'm curious to see what you guys think.

I'm sorry but a lot of us don't have unlimited money and need a computer that would last as long as possible. Not everyone here have the same needs as you do or same amount of money for that matter. We can't pay premium price for 2011 computer that just plain and simple stupid. you obviously don't know much if you're suggesting to go buy this old 2011 iMac if,you're gonna post ignorant stuff like this on this thread you better G.T.F.O.

September launch pegged for Apple's 13" Retina MacBook Pro, new iMac

You guys have no doubt seen this from Apple Insider's article of July 24. Thought it was worth re-posting here.

As for the iMac, Kuo believes a refreshed model could debut close to the end of September but qualifies the statement by saying indicators from the supply chain point to a later release. Shipments of Apple's desktop products will dip in July due to inventory adjustments but are expected to dramatically rise in August as the new iMac starts shipping out from factories.

 This dearth of information is maddening.

I'm about to give up waiting and buy one loaded 27" now. We need two but I can keep our other PC running for another couple of months while we continue this wait and see approach.

Meanwhile we have rumors and entire stories devoted to the iPhone 5's dock connector.

I've been this close to buying a refurbed 21-inch all week. This money is burning a hole in my proverbial pocket.

The only thing stopping me is the updated GPU that we'll see. Even though I do most of my gaming on my Xbox, it would be nice to know the power is there if I ever want to browse some of my old Steam games and the occasional PC-only game like Starcraft 2.

Can't blame MR for that. They cover whatever's out there. They can't invent an iMac story because we, or they, want one.

That's true. But you can't deny that possible iMac news could have been overshadowed by the new iPhone news. The truth is we're sick and tired of these new iPhone rumors and I know it isn't Mac rumors fault but I can't help to feel that since they been having so many news regarding the iPhone they don't have to go out of their way to go research and ask sources etc about upcoming products including the iMac. In other words we have iPhone news everyday so we don't have to go research/ask around for news. Know what I'm saying?

The 2011 can't handle Starcraft 2?

Got to Agree which is why I am buying next week. We are all waiting for something that is not even certain to be released this year. Look at all the rumours of iPhones, iPads etc. There's been nothing relating to the iMac .. Nothing!!!!
