I don't see Retina or a size change happening this year, that'll be for the big redesign in 2013. By the way: the MBP uses a mobile processor, the iMac uses a desktop class one and 32 GB is the current max RAM for iMacs.

I see: new anti-glare screen similar to the rMBP, Ivy Bridge CPUs, better GPUs, USB 3, and cheaper SSD and RAM prices for build to order models.

All this talk about a complet redesign in 2013! I have followed Mac Rumors and this forum for a long time now and have read all of the news concerning the iMac. I haven't seen anything close to a relayble rumor that say's iMacs will have a complet redesign 2013, other then Cook's mail clearfication about the Mac Pro redesign 2013 or when ever that will happen. What I am trying to say is that it can be a complet redesign alrady this fall or spring 2013, summer/fall 2013 or spring 2014 we don't know until it's released.

I am also eger to see the new iMac's and as everyone els here hoping it will be soon. I don't see retina if the release will be this fall but maybe later, but it can still be a big redesign.

Hate to burst yours :). I had terrible problems with SC2 on mine. But that was before I've added 32GB or Ram and I haven't played it yet, so can't say SC2 was flying. (2011-27"-i5 3.1ghz-hd6970m1gb)

However I did manage to play it on mid 2010 mbp with the basic spec. Though quality was quite poor, yet I did play till protos-zerg queen cinematic. :)

Hah! It doesn't, because I still get to play it w/o any trouble :D

Read Jony Ive's interview.

The short answer is: no, not especially. They want to make products they consider great at their own pace. If other people agree they're great, and they don't screw up, the money just flows in on its own.

Yes I get that but if it was just a matter of giving the iMac a new CPU, USB3 and other spec then you would think it could have been delivered back in June with the MBP 2012 update.

I just feel the time it has taken they might be working on something special.

I agree. If November rolls around and there's no refresh, there won't be one in 2012.
YA THINK?!! LOL - Quite humorous, all this speculation is. We've been speculating about a new iMac since late last year. Ivy Bridge has come months ago, and still nothing. We've been speculating about a new iMac since late last year!

----------

People around here have been talking about a complete redesign since 2011, if not before! And we're still not living in the reality of the situation, which is there has been no complete redesign and we don't have any proof at all that there will be a complete redesign!!!! Nada, nothing other than people's imaginations!

And since when has Apple been forced to follow any of that???

We're still waiting.

If you need and iMac, then go buy and iMac and stop wasting your life speculating!

Are you willing to contribute $600 to my iMac fund to offset the retail price so that I can pay the actual value of the ~18-month-old hardware?

I thought it might be "special", and it still might be. But I still think the target was ML release (given Nvidia's schedule), and given the reported manufacturing issues with the expected new screen, I'm prepared for the design changes to be minimal.

----------

That's true. But you can't deny that possible iMac news could have been overshadowed by the new iPhone news.

.. Case in point: AppleInsider picked up 5 characters in ML 10.8.1 that reference a new iMac, wrote 2,000 words on it, and then MR, CNet, and others followed up with 1,000 words each. Turned out that those characters and been in OS X since a dot release of Lion. Oh well.

I don't need the iMac I just want it my Macbook Pro early 2007 still running strong. I just wanna by an iMac so i can give it to my sisters dother that need an computer and don't afford to by one.

Exatly I don't won't to pay mutch overprice for a 1,3 year old hardwere.

I really wish these business trolls would stop trying to tell people to buy an iMac now ... They are a disgrace as they know full well you are buying seriously outmoded gear that is going to not be able run the OS 2 years before the long overdue upgrade of the iMac will

Right... Because my hopelessly outdated 2009 i7 quad iMac with 16gb of RAM and an SSD is struggling soo much with ML that it has no hope of running the next OS.

Well no, but Apple will decide to stop supporting your 2009 with new versions of OS X probably a year before they stop supporting the 2010's. It's conceivable that they'd stop supporting the 2011's 2 years before they stop supporting the 2012's, since they've been around for 2 updates already.

iMac Pro

Hey guys!

I made a little iMac concept, combining the iMac, the Mac Pro and the Cintiq into one device. Because I believe the desktop is far from dead and deserves Apples full attention again. And a Pro device should not have glued in components.

Very curious how you managed to build a site that requires horizontal scrolling at 1440x900, yet disabled the horizontal scrollbar. (Chrome.)

My Page is usually visited by other Designers and we fancy big screens. Also, hey, true Apple spirit, I don't support old hardware :)

Great concept!! Personally I've thought about this myself. Not that it will ever happen, since tablet is only for a fraction of the iMac users...but I would love this product personally. The concept execution is really nice. Only thing I would have changed is how you tip it down... Seems a bit awkward to tip the entire metal stand over like that. Its minimalistic but I would have preferred some string bending stand were you could have multiple degrees of bending. Thanks for sharing!

I think apple has a patent for something like that, and yes, different degrees would be a must have for such a device - but just imagine how many people would walk into apple stores and break regular iMacs after such a device is released! :)

News

Well, no news for a while and now scraps. Well, it's something:

This article suggests that Apple plans to phase out the optical drive in the next iMac.

No surprise here. Apple wants to force everyone to get their content through iTunes. If you want to rip CDs, you'll have to get an external optical drive.

Apple Insider's original article on the subject is quite interesting. It suggests that the removal of the optical drive will come in version 13 of the iMac. (The current version of the iMac found in Apple stores is version 12.)

The article states that the reason Apple has removed their optical drive is because they have "been working on a pair [of] strikingly slimmer, lighter, and more elegant models that will feature of profile similar to today's latest LED TVs, though radiating a bit more panache."

So, if version 13 of the iMac will no longer have an optical drive, and if Apple is working on a sleek new design (likely not to have an optical drive), does that mean we won't get a new iMac until 2013? Or could this "spec bump" in 2012 also be losing it's optical drive?

Would have been funny if Apple now decided to go back to their lamp design for the 2012 iMac...then I think I´m gonna hate myself for waiting :D

I mean, what a silly design, even back then! Ok it looked kinda funky back in 2002. But, why the heck would anyone want to have the entire machine designed around the ability to move the monitor around. How many times do you feel the necessity to move the screen around in different angles? Think I did that once....when I bought the computer. :D anyway fun reminiscing the past :) ...Could have worked as a drawing tablet though ;)

Man, Jonny Ive was even floating in space back then :D

You're welcome to believe what you want, but I believe differently on both of these. If they want use a new 28nm GPU, AND they want to use Nvidia, AND they want this year's iMac to have better graphics performance than last year's, then then absolutely need the 680M for the top model.

I hope you're right because this delay is really ..a lot,i saw last rumor about Bootcamp and new Imacs ..then the update said it was known since last November...well,its such an agony..but you know what life goes on still..we will see,and i hope you're right about Nvidia and Imacs,i saw rumors about Nvidia,i saw the 650m within new MacBook Pro..but..we have no REAL evidences Apple will switch from Amd,you were sayng too that 7970m was quite close to the 680m and less pricy.. .
What i can say,Fall s coming ,i hope won't be an "empty Fall" full of Ios sweetness but also with some "OldiebutGoldie" new desktop.

Time will tell.... I'm hoping for a redesign, but not too hard as I think it is still very possible that the 2012 iMac will keep the same form factor (although maybe with antiglare screen)

Possible Scenarios

I've done a lot of thinking about this and come up with three possible scenarios for how things will play out (listed below, but not in order of likelihood):

SCENARIO 1: Sept 12 rolls around and we get one of those oh-and-one-more-thing kind of moments. We are presented with two new, sleek, redesigned iMacs. There is no retina display, there is no optical drive, perhaps a non-reflective screen. (As many point out, this is unlikely given all the products that could potentially emerge in September. A 7" iPad is one of them, but I've been hearing this for years. Perhaps the 7" iPad will be bumped back to Spring 2013 when new iPads are usually presented, making room for a totally new iMac this fall.)

SCENARIO 2: The Sept 12 event happens, no iMac is mentioned. Within weeks an iMac 2012 appears with a bump in specs, Ivy Bridge, better graphics, etc. No true redesign for iMacs as mentioned above appears until Fall 2013. (I'm starting to think this is less likely. If there is a big redesign on the horizon for the iMac, it seems unlikely that they would do a minor spec bump before then. As many have mentioned here, if it was just a minor spec bump, then I think that would have happened last June. I don't think "screen lamination issues" would have stopped a simple minor spec bump.)

SCENARIO 3: iMacs aren't mentioned at the Sept 12 event and no spec bump happens through October. A complete iMac redesign is presented in the Spring 2013. (This is what I'm thinking now is most likely. But it's all marking time with speculation until we actually get some solid news. Why can't someone leave a new iMac behind at a bar, just for some real news?!?)
