me too, because I hate a lot of cables on my table so AIO is the best for me bur without optical drive I will must buy another machine and it will be another cable... :(

I started to worry, I don't want that rumor about removing the 21 iMac to be true.
A 27 iMac is too big to me + I didn't plan for 27's price.
So if that was true and I couldn't get the 27, this whole waiting is gonna be such a bloody waste of time.
I don't find it wise decision, there's a huge area between 17 and 27.
And the 21's advantages don't exit in another product of Mac family.

New iMac on Oct 5th?

No other computer, not even the iPad, is closer associated with Steve Jobs than the iMac. Maybe Apple will bring out the new version exactly one year after Steve died.

*******. I sure hope the part about optical drive will be proven false.

Few people I know use their opticals more than once a month or around there. Some never use them aside from initial software installs.

While the MacPro sans DVD is kind of ridiculous at this time, it definitely will go sans DVD drive by 2016 when DVDs become yesterday's tech. The iMac, however, is lumbered by the large HDs and optical. If they made an iMac-mini without the optical and including only a laptop drive (with SSD available), it could be constructed to use less energy and be very-very thin.

I'd love to see them intro an iMac-mini-pad-type thing for $899. 19" screen. 500MB internal laptop drive. Thin, light, almost portable.

I'm guessing the amount of people using the optical drive is rather small. I really hope they'll remove it and use the space for something useful.... Better heat reduction, slicker design, etc. need a SuperDrive, just buy an external one.

I don't see them dropping the optical drive because they kept them on the regular Macbook Pro's.

They'll be dropping them. All the new products have dropped them (Air, Mini, rMBP). Apple's trend is towards optical disc free computers. The OS isn't even available on DVD anymore.

For me, the only think I really want out of the iMac at the minute is the addition of USB 3 ports and maybe hdmi. I think the current screen looks amazing. Maybe over glossy but I can deal with that. It's already shipping with Ivy Bridge and you can customise it to be an awesome powerhouse. I don't think that a retina display is very necessary but might be nice. A cosmetic change would be nice but I'm not holding my breath. I'm going to wait until after this apple event an if nothing comes of it then I will take the plunge and get one.

Do apple ever announce new products in October?

You are exactly right glitch44 and the proof is in the pudding.

or I will get crazy...:D:confused::apple:

Hmm what good that kind iMac-mini is for? It would be less powerful, might as well has 15" MBP specs inside, yet as you said it would be [almost] portable.

I think it's the worst of both worlds. Barely powerful, and barely portable too?

I think this a very good assumption on the release date. Since the iMacs have been "delayed" - or at least that's what analysts are saying. It wouldn't be a shocker if Apple wanted to do a 5th of october release to honor Steve Jobs. I think this sounds very likely, and it's also a way to give the iMac some extra attention in the media.

though I hope it will come out sooner personally ;)
