I don't see them dropping the optical drive because they kept them on the regular Macbook Pro's.
They'll be dropping them. All the new products have dropped them (Air, Mini, rMBP). Apple's trend is towards optical disc free computers. The OS isn't even available on DVD anymore.

No other computer, not even the iPad, is closer associated with Steve Jobs than the iMac. Maybe Apple will bring out the new version exactly one year after Steve died.
