I certainly hope it's correct. For the love of god, please get rid of the ODD once and for all.

The sooner the better.

For the love of God, please let it stay for now. Getting rid of it this early is a cocky and selfish move.

I don't know about all that.. but it would be a fairly major inconvenience at this point. Even if I've used my ODD on an average of twice per year, that's 8-10 times where I was left with no alternative, because that's the way the software or music was distributed. Requiring an external for those instances would be frustrating.

What are the odds that this speed bump will include the Nvidia 680m?

From what I can reason, better than 90%.

Assumptions:
- They've gone Nvidia-only, at least for this year
- They only want new 28nm cards; they don't want rebadged 40nm cards from last year
- They want to exceed the graphics performance of the 2011 models

When you plug all those variables in, the only remaining card better than the AMD 6970m is the Nvidia 680M. There's a steep drop from the 680M to the 660M, and the 670M and 675M are 40nm.

I'd be happy if they got rid of it for a justifiable reason. I.e. price drop, using the space in the chassis for better parts like a desktop graphics chip. But the way Apple do things these days, they'll probably get rid of the Superdrive and replace it with nothing. Probably charge more for the privilege too.

It's rather obvious too little Rumors are going on around iMac when there's like tons of posts pickering about ODD or not. Go dig for rumors instead! ;)

The well is dry...

i know its really really discouraging, there hasnt been any rumors regarding the imac, its very very frustrating, like i said before and i dont care if anyone agrees with me or not but i believe that the imac news are been overshadowed by the iphone news. Im so sick and tired of the iphone news, im waiting for one too but goddamit i already know enough, what i dont know enough is about the imacs, BRING ON THE IMAC NEWS PLEASE!

It may be this Mediterranean heat, but I'm almost on the edge of buying a refurb 2011 and then, if/when the new ones come out, decide whether to keep it or sell it and get the new one. Yeah, quite a stupid idea, but as someone else pointed out on another thread… every day it makes less and less sense to buy the 2011, yet we have absolutely no concrete signs that the 2012 iMac will actually be a 2012 iMac. (It was supposed to come out in January, then April, then WWDC, then ML, now maybe September, perhaps October…)

Yeah, the way they do things now, they'd most probably ditch it for the sake of thinness, which is totally !@#$%^&. Heck, I'd even be happy if they make the iMac slightly thicker than the current one to accommodate better parts. Oh I'm a dreamer I know.

God I always thought Apple's designs were revolutionary, but their pursuit of thinness is getting too far or too fast. Things are starting to get too thin for their own good.

Exactly how I feel, man. It makes me wanna choke myself looking at how one by one of the iPhone parts are 'leaked'. One news per iPhone part LOL

I'm pretty sure if everyone stopped buying "new" iMacs it would force them to bring out the update. So stop caving you impatient ba******!

Were you not paying attention during this whole "iMac identifier found in ML 10.8.1 Bootcamp config" bubbaloo? AppleInsider is still reporting it as a new, awesome thing, while most of the press has caught on that the string has been there for a while. Still, it's proof that the media is hungry for iMac news and will report/echo any morsel they can find.

Yeah, its SO boring. iphone news are almost as boring as Samsung vs. Apple Trial. THere´s nothing more to see.

O look, the new charger is 8 pin! Breaking news! the dock connector is actually 6 pins. No wait, the charger has 9 PINS!!! I mean WHO CARES???
I´m checking the rumor sites daily, and there´s nothing else they have to write about. I´m gonna buy that iphone, and still its boring news to me. AppleInside seems to be the only news site that tries to dig up something about Macs these days - and even they are grasping for straws. This whole double down secrecy thing should be a bit more about iphone and a bit less about Macs.

Yeah, like apple release stuff randomly :D I think the release date is pretty much set in stone to be honest - and apple is pretty aware when the imac stock is out. they probably knew all this months ago.

Not as simple as all that. Inventory sitting on a shelf doesn't help sorting out manufacturing issues go faster. Sales are certainly down; you can't think they just have a model ready to release and they're waiting to see how many old ones they can sell... if you maximize short term over the long term, soon you will have neither.

Excellent point. Besides doesn't Apple maintain a relatively low stock level and produce machines as needed? I doubt they have a ton of excess stock to get rid of anyway.

.....think marketing here folks

Any iMac updates will surely follow the "planned obsolescence" marketing strategy made famous by Kodak back in the pre-instamatic camera days (maybe even the Brownie camera).
Depending upon what stock of older technology iMac's Apple has sitting in warehouses somewhere will probably in someway dictate when the new ones will make their debut in addition to the holiday buying season. What better marketing ploy to entice you to empty your pockets for a new iMac than the inclusion of USB 3.0.....a faster video card (with 2gb ram to handle the retina display and/or streaming)..... Ad what I think everyone is missing as a game changer that we will soon see...... The progression from 802-11N to the newer and three times faster wi-fi technology of 802-11AC. The technology is here now, will be a must for streaming content demands and imagine if you buy a Mac now and right after the new year the new 802-1AC is introduced into the 2013 macs along with an updated Airport Extreme... Expresses, etc. My point is that unless the marketing geniuses at Apple have lost there minds they have already planned well in advance exactly when the previous technology will be replaced by the new and better technology (sitting on the shelf) to best maximize profit.... The pre-planning of making your own products obsolete with the introduction or evolution if you will of new technology ensures future sales to your customer base thus insuring future sales and success of your company.

Yes, but all else being equal, you're more likely to update a product if it's sales drop off a cliff. It would be absurd if current sales didn't play some role in the decision to release an updated product.

If they are reacting to sales, then they will be far behind. Product roadmaps are laid out 3-5 years in advance.

see im gonna wait till October, but i just wish we got something like they did with the iphone.. someone said sep 12 and thats seems to be the date. I will be happy enough if thats what we get but right now we dont even know 100% for sure that its even coming out this year. I mean i know it probably isnt but we just need something, something that has some sort meaning about these 2012 imacs. As far as marketing, one thing i dont understand with apple is that they say "oh the macs arent doing to good specially the desktops". well i wonder why, they dont update them. The mac pro hasnt been updated in 2+ years and they are wondering why people are not buying them, same with the imacs and mac minis, people are not buying them because its simply old hardware. "The iphone didnt do as expected" well it was an "S" update so people didnt see much different so a lot of people didnt go and buy them, i bet when this new iphone comes out its gonna sell like crazy because its an all new design and new stuff. So their marketing thing doesnt make any sense in my head. So go try to figure this $h!+ out.

Not for spec updates, and not for specific timing. Apple depends too much on outside suppliers to be able to set their own schedule that far in advance.

Yes you have a point. The desktops are still earning billions though and macs in general are eating up markets. I guess just that pads, iPhones etc is enough for most casual users. Like my mother, she don't see the point of why she bought a laptop after she got an iPad. And that's the majority of the market. But of course if Mac pros would have a more normal price tag and up to date hardware. And the iMac was a good gaming machine, they would have sold a lot more. For me I buy the Mac because its a nice machine inside-outside. I can do all the work I do on the iMac on a pc and it's cheaper. But I'm patient I guess. Not everyone is as apple geek as I am, so then going Mac is hard if you don't get up dot date hardware with ok'ish prices. Go figure why they keep their models this long. Can't hurt to update at least the CPU and GPU a bit more often.

i know .. but just go look how many iphone leaks has been in the past 2 weeks or more. Every day almost every several hours we learn more and more about this iphone. It were so saturated with this its sickening hearing so much about one devices... at least switch it to the suppose ipad mini or ipods, or more importantly the iMacs, these rumors sites need to bring something to new, the new iphone its not news anymore we all know how its gonna look like and we are very familiar with most of the components that its gonna have so can they please move on now. WHERE ARE THE EFFIN iMACS?!!

I really hope that the iMac gets released soon. This is driving me nuts. I wish they would release a roadmap and not just give us cryptic indications of infrequent computer releases. What the F?

After a long time of waiting I think there will be a spec bump this year and a totally redesign of the IMac at WWDC 2013...
After all these rumors the last half year, which didn't take place, I cannot believe that there will be a redesign in 2012...
So please Apple give us waiting customers a spec bump and take our money...
