Of assembled computers. It's possible that they could have components that they want to use up. I don't think that would dictate a large delay, but it might factor in at least somewhat to the final release date.

Apple is far too cruel to its suppliers to buy components it doesn't need. The supply chain is (rather literally) a well-oiled machine. If they flip inventory in 5 days, they likely have no more than 7 days supply of any 1 component. Or less. Read up on Just In Time Manfucturing.

You have to wonder if the reason for no new iMac isn't because Apple doesn't want to release one but due to stability issues with Intel's new chipsets.

I want my first iMac and I'm sooo tempted to get 2011 model, only have till the 31sy of August to avail of student discount. Meaning il save €160 on the computer. Think il take the plunge. My money is burning a hole in my pocket ha.

You can bet your sweet ass that if the new iMac has retina then it most certainly won't be a "silent refresh". I think it's also fair to say that when they do redesign the iMac... it WILL have a retina display.

So if you take those two ideas into account then you know...

1. If it's a redesigned "retina" iMac it WILL be announced at a staged event. Whether it shares the spotlight with other devices is still arguable though.

2. Since this next event is September 12th and will absolutely be about the new iPhone and iOS... and most likely the iPad mini... I don't think there's much room for the announcement of a new redesigned retina iMac too. (If you take into consideration how large the screen would have to be and the technology and cost behind making it retina ready.)

3. If that's the case then either... a. We'll have a simple refresh on September 12th or possibly some time in October
or
b. They'll have to have another event in October for the redesigned retina iMac.

The second option above does NOT seem likely whatsoever due to the timing and so forth. A second event in October simply isn't going to happen which means if September 12th comes and goes with no mention of an iMac... at best we'll be getting a refresh around October.

Which, really, I'm fine with.

There's a lot riding on this September event but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

This years WWDC threw everyone for a loop... myself included.

Give it to the last week in August... if no iMac... take the plunge on a really nice 2011 model.

Then as soon as they release the new iMac... (if I were you I'd wait for the redesigned iMac with the retina display at that point)... then sell your 2011 immediately for the best price you can and grab the new hotness!

Regardless... good luck!

im not ignoring history. Im going by based on what ive heard and recent rumors which holds more weight than history because apple doesnt really do every single event the same. Take last year for example they didnt announced the macbook pro or airs on wwdc, this year they did, so how can we really rely on that ??? while i agree with you to certain extend no one has yet given me a legit reason that holds any weight besides "previous history" which i just debunked that the imac will not come sept 12. however im curious to know when you think the imac will be release if not sept 12 and please state why?

It's not because macs can't be unveiled along with iOS, but becuase the event is already going to be packed to the gills as it is. iPhone w/ ios 6, new ipods, redesigned itunes and the iPad mini are all pretty likely and that is a LOT of stuff to fit into a keynote -- new iPad had a keynote all to itself.

Apple will want to spread out the excitement of their new products and give customers a chance to pad their wallets before the next announcement, thats why they will wait and release new iMac and 13" rMBP in october via their website.

Good things come to those who wait.
I've been waiting over a year to get a new iMac, but only now can actually afford one. I think the local JB Hifi is sick of seeing me their LOL

I am confident this long ass wait will be worth it. There is going to be something special. I don't know what it is, but it will be great. C'mon, this is Apple we're talking about.

I hope you're right, if not retina displays them maybe Matte screen as standard? Maybe they will realize more than the average home user is seeing the value of the iMac over the Mac Pro?

What stability issues? Links to your sources please?

The frustrating thing about this is, the longer we wait for a new iMac, the less reason there is to buy the current iMac.

The long we wait, the shorter time it will be until a new one is released, but the more you want to spend your money on an iMac. How frustrating.

BTW is iPad mini confirmed?

Nothing will be confirmed until Apple releases it.

I'll be interested in seeing the invite for the September event. It might give some clues what they plan on announcing.

I can see an iPad Mini + MBA being the perfect combination for students. Being able to make sick ass presentations in keynote that blows away PowerPoint and then being able to use your iPad Mini to control everything + look at what slide is currently being displayed. Killer presentations ensue.

I predict the iMac will not have a matte screen or retina display but the cover glass will be built into the display like the rMBP so we get the best of both worlds- glossy screen w/o much glare.

If Apple plays around with iOS device release dates as per below - and this frees up the March 2013 launch window "held" for iPad - it would create the space for a big product splash iMac/Mac Pro. Seven months away

iMore has learned that Apple intends to update their entire lineup of iOS device products to support the new, miniaturized Dock connector, and to do it as early the rumored September 12 special event this fall. This would include the new iPhone 5, the the new iPod nano and iPod touch, the rumored 7-inch iPad mini, and an updated version of the current 9.7-inch iPad.

The information comes from the same sources that told iMore about the new, smaller Dock connector back in February, and about a mini Dock adapter to fit legacy accessories last month.

We've gone over the reasons why Apple would release an iPad mini and how they could implement it before, but refreshing the iPad 3 so soon after it's March, 2012 launch, especially considering past updates have occurred only yearly schedules, is something equally interesting to consider.

Apparently, Apple believes consistent Dock connectors across the line, and other improvements they're able to make to the new iPad this point, are more important than sticking to yearly release schedules. Apple has previously shown little aversion to extending release schedules, with a 16 month gap between iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, and no substantive iPod touch updates for 23 months and counting. But what about significantly shortening them?

Rumors of early iPad updates also aren't without precedent. Last year Daring Fireball, TechCrunch, and iMore and others heard the iPad 3 was being considered for a fall 2011 launch before ultimately getting scheduled into the "regular" spring 2012 slot.

Furthermore, iLounge reported last week that they'd heard from their own sources that an updated 9.7-inch iPad was in the works, but framed it in the context of a 4th-generation device that would include the new Dock connector, a rear-mounted mic, and address heat issues. They felt it was unlikely, however, due to Apple's typical iPad release schedules.

Yet Apple is firing on all cylinders are the moment, confidently moving OS X updates to the same yearly schedule as iOS updates, and beginning the process of bringing Retina displays to the Mac.

Whether a new, new iPad this fall would be an iPad 4,1 or simply a new iPad 3,x is unclear. Certainly Apple could decide again to hold off on any and all updates until next spring, or could do a more modest iPad 3 update this fall and a proper iPad 4 next spring.

In the meantime, it sure sounds like Apple is planning to run the line when it comes to iOS device updates this September.

Way to draw the worst possible conclusion...

Given that the Retina iPad was a "plan B" that has far too many compromises (increased heat, increased thickness, increased weight), shortening its lifespan is hardly surprising. The description of an iOS big bang in September sounds very plausible.

However, that doesn't discredit the Kuo report. Getting iMacs in early October or late August isn't ruled out by doing the iOS big bang in September.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they use the March window for Mini (which we've heard virtually nothing about, and could actually very well be on a 2 year cycle) or Pro. But opening the March window doesn't mean that's where iMacs specifically are moving.

i dont think apple will do any major changes to the ipad besides changing the dock connector... thats about it. Kinda like it did with the iphone when it went to verizon. They slightly changed the internals the band around it the components dont match the at&t version of the iphone. Im very very VERY confident that apple would just change the dock connector and thats it... I still dont believe that will see an ipad mini this sep.. i think well see it in march along with a new ipad... i believe apple starting now or soon the production of the newer ipad.. hence everyone think its gonna come out then. Remenber last year when even parts were leaked with a new the design of the iphone and we just got the 4s same design. I think thats what were gonna see. I mean they said that siri is coming to he current ipad. why would they even say wouldnt they save that as a "new" feature for the NEWER ipad if it was to come out sep 12.. they would use that at a selling point.... I believe they are just gonna update the dock connector and thats it.

Everything for the "Plan A" iPad is ready to go. Mainly they needed Sharp to not fail at producing the IGZO screen. Thickness, heat, battery life fall into place. Seeing the iPad in Sept that they meant for March makes perfect sense.. it would be a disappointing yearly bump, to be honest. That gives them until perhaps next Sept to come up with the next new big thing.

Exactly my point of view. I am so tempted to go for a refurb 2011 – no way I'm getting it "new". It would be €979 compared to the regular €1158. That's a €179 saving, or €109 If also I get the magic trackpad, as it's not included with the refurb. I'm obviously talking about the base 21.5-inch, but that would be quite nice for me since I'm coming from a 2006 iMac anyway. I'd save money, get a good machine now, and even if I "lose" one year of support, well, it'll happen in 2016 rather than 2017 if we consider a five-year support period. That's a long time from now, and I really don't plan to be in such dire straits that I can't replace my machine sooner. Ideally i'd keep it for a couple of releases, sell it while it's still worth a decent amount, and move on.

And yet... I waited for so long, ever since last December actually, and I know I would be disappointed if apple does come up with a new iMac in September, October or, worse yet, this month. It wouldn't make my potential refurbished iMac stop working or anything, but... I'd be disappointed, yes. And as you point out, every day I want to go this route and every day, if I do give in, I get prepared for more disappointment.

First world problems indeed, but this is my work machine and work is quite scarce these days, so it's a catch-22 situation. For me, that is.

If the rumors are true about all iOS device to be updated with the new dock connector. iMac update on september is less likely to happen.

Cmiiw but with every iphone announcement, the availability was usually 1 week after. And updating all the ios lineup is a huge undertaking for apple, i'm quite sure the mac would be put on the sideline if this does happen.

I'm gonna rub it in your face OP.lol. but seriously I understand your frustration and sometimes when you get wishful thinking and it doesn't happen, it could make for a big disappointment. Maybe you could focus on other things and make do with what you have until the refresh. I would do the same if I were you.

I also been waiting for a refresh since april, but when I saw the wwdc I knew that the iMac would be updated in the fall, not in 1-2 months after, cause it doesnt make any sense. And bought 27 3.1 immediately because I need it.

Whats the chances of the next iMac graphics card being better than the GTX570?

Watching videos online it plays some AWESOME games and is over a year old now!

The current top of the line iMac has Radeon HD 6970 which is just as good, even a bit better when running at resolutions above 1080.

The GTX 570 is a desktop card. To compare cards I suggest this site, you can change the settings to include for example the GTX 570: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Many of us hope that the top 27" iMac will include the GTX 680M. Also remember that most tests are done on 1080p screens, the 27" iMac is 1440p and any performance would be slightly lower due to that, and due to the fact that OS X run games somewhat worse than Windows.

Just me, or did they drop the price of refurb 2011 iMac's another $30 or so?

Any historical data on price drops of refurbs as compared to new releases? :)

Would that indicate anything? What is the general stock of iMac? seems rather unchanged from a couple of months back... Its in stock everywhere in small amounts. I'll be very surprised if we see a new iMac in August or September.
