I doubt the upcoming iMac will be a "full re-design", but I could be wrong about that.

Nor will it be a simple "speed bump" (Ivy Bridge CPU) and addition of USB3. I'll -guess- that Apple is planning to introduce new display options as well. No retina display as of yet, but some kind of "matte" finish screen is likely.

I believe the main reasons for the "delay" are design/manufacturing problems that are holding up approval of a final design. Or perhaps the final design has been solidified, but there remain some tech problems in production. I recall reading here on MR that there had been some problems with the new "matte" displays.

I would think a mid-August release might have worked best for Apple from a marketing standpoint, as new models introduced then could be advertised with a "back-to-school" slant. Obviously, a release "into September" cuts into sales of the new model, as most students will have already made their purchases by that date...

I agree with you to cetain extend. The i believe there wont be a FULL overhall design change. They might just slim it down a bit to make look sexier, and im pretty sure they are gonna get rid of the super drive. as for mid august i hope so! but now im re thinking stuff and it seems more like October. And as far as a "matte" option; i dont think so the last thing we heard was screen lamination issues. However i do believe apple is going to use the same anti reflective glass that it uses on the Retina macbook pro. I dont think well see a complete "matte" screen.

October seems more likely considering the sept 12 would be iOS related. I would love a HDMI in but not sure on what resolution for retina unless they put a much beefier GPU in there.

It's conceivable that they announce it as "Retina" but it's 4K (effective 1920x1080), and you can select 2560x1440 as the "more space" (and less crisp) option. 5120x2880 is out of the question.

The 680M can probably handle 4K pretty well, but you'd actually want the 4GB VRAM upgrade for that.

I still don't actually believe it'll be Retina, but I'm beginning to see it as a possibility. I have no idea what the panels would cost, but this would match nicely with the earlier announcement that Sharp was mass producing 4K 32" IGZO panels intended for monitors. Nothing about a 27" though.

Yeah, I would take that 4k 32" panel but apple has just been double pixel everything so far so interested to see what approach they will do to the iMac.
Edit: ivy bridge, 4k 32", hdmi in, and more affordable dual-drive option would be an awesome update

I do work in Pro Tools and Logic which would benefit from a bigger screen but I really don't want to have to make a special trip to Ikea to get an entirely new desk to accommodate a new iMac.

There are three notions that seem to be in vogue these days. ANd Apple seems to leading the way. ;)

1. portable - "the desktop is dead!!!!". No way. I'm all for iPhone, iPads or whatever, but I still WANT my desktop machine to remain desk-bound. ;)

2. big - tendency is going towards 27', but it's too big for a "normal" desk, IMOH. Tried them at a local Apple shop and didn't like it at all. It's like going to the theatre and being in the first row, glued to the huge screen.

3. thin - a desktop doesn't have to be ultra/super/extra thin. Common sense needs to be applied. I'll gladly trade a few inches for low heat emission, for example.

I love a big screen, and I'll trade a few inches for a desktop GPU!

Amazing what a difference 4 days makes. When I look back at the start of this thread you were confident of a 12 September launch. :)

it seem like it made sense hence i made thread to see what you guys thought, i still feel strong about a sep 12 but the only reason why i deny everyone else said.. and i still stand by this.. this "based on previous history" thing doesnt mean anything apple does and releases their devices based on other things not on previous events or releases. I havent change my mind completely but im open to suggestions and i can see what people are saying and if other people have better idea and thoughts then ill agree with that person if it make sense.. i guess im a little bit like jobs. lol

Understand.. it's not that they won't do it that way because they've never done it that way. It's that there's a reason, a thought process behind why they've never done it that way, and I for one don't think any of the fundamentals that went into that decision making process have changed.

its kinda sad if you look it at this way: Apple updates EVERY SINGLE mobile device they have.. The desktop to the eeennnnddd of the line, the last products they release.. its kinda sad. :(

It could be nice, if the new iMac would have a 31" screen, but round alike!

So since last year the iMac was updated 5 months before the iPhone, that must mean it was 5x more important, right?

true that.. but idk i feel like apple should have had planned this a little better. It just seem a little personal because originally i was gonna go for the mac pro becase there were rumors that it was gonna get updated it did but i wouldnt call it an update it was the biggest slap on the face to professionals, so i said well ill just get a maxed out imac when it comes out. and this year this sole year the imac takes the longest time it has ever taken to be updated.. so ive been computerless for quite sometime now,so i know im taking it way to personal but wouldnt you a be a little frustrated? the year that i tried to upgrade all this crap happens idk it kinda frustrates me.

Good things come to those who wait.

I am confident this long ass wait will be worth it. There is going to be something special. I don't know what it is, but it will be great. C'mon, this is Apple we're talking about.

Yeps ... like the Mac Pro "magnificent" june upgrade ? Nobody has ever seen even a small leak about a new iMac and we're in August already : in my opinion, it's not gonna be a 2012 upgrade ...

Maybe they still have excess stock of the 2011 they want to burn off. Maybe they'll release the update as soon as the back to school discounts are over.

Sigh..

1) It's been proven that Apple completely turns over inventory in ~5 days.
2) Available stock didn't stop the MBA and MBP refreshes.

Of assembled computers. It's possible that they could have components that they want to use up. I don't think that would dictate a large delay, but it might factor in at least somewhat to the final release date.

I agree and this suggests Its a plan,a planned decision in my opinion,
we have a lot to wait for,Ipod nano with Bt4 and new dock,
A5 Ipod touch,Ipad mini,Iphone 5...and maybe new Imacs and Minis,
(a very full Fall ..isn'it?)and when i will see those LAST ones my eyes won't believe their retinas..
for how long they took to arrive ,for the moment we can only wait..
i hope Apple won't become ( for the desktops )just this,
A-WAIT.
