My younger nephews all asked for iOS and Andriod devices. My kids, Gen Z, have no interest at all in Nintedo hardware. They are 4 and 1 and know how to use every iOS device in the house.

So what makes you think that your nephews are going to buy nintendo games on iOS or Android? (for $30-60 a piece)

The emulators are legal. The games played within them are not.

Apple offering emulators for download is basically endorsing piracy.

Because the game companies are filing lawsuit after lawsuit against Google, right? Nobody is going on a witch hunt for emulators for 20 year old games they are not losing revenue on. Furthermore, playing your own backups of games that do not have DRM is legal.

Gotta love these internet mall cops.

I think that Nintendo's characters, stories, and gameplay have the quality and appeal to transcend generations.... ...but not their hardware.

Who said anything about carrying them around?
I'd love to have a dual stick controller for my iPhone and a second dedicated controller for either my iPad or Apple TV.

I've had every generation of console from the Colecovision through the Xbox 360. I'm in my late 30s, married with two kids and I don't have the time to invest or the desire to spend the money that AAA console games require. I want to be able to pick up and play games that have middle of the road depth (say PS1 to PS2 era) on my iPad and Apple TV.

Apple is going to nail the console market they can create a gaming ecosystem that lands somewhere between current iOS offerings and the AAA console titles.

I read some of your other posts on whether or not Nintendo should bring their library to iOS. They should and will. They have no choice.

Nintendo should see the writing on the wall and evolve into a software company and begin telling their stories on other platforms. They have legions of Gen Xers like me who would love to play through their back catalog via the Apple platform. Meanwhile, their IP isn't gaining traction with Millennials and Gen Z. My older nephews (older Millennials) were the last to ask for Nintendo portables for bdays and Xmas. My younger nephews all asked for iOS and Andriod devices. My kids, Gen Z, have no interest at all in Nintendo hardware. They are 4 and 1 and know how to use every iOS device in the house. They have no interest at all in Nintendo. Mario and Link are lost on them.

I agree. If Nintendo were to licence their most popular offerings, and sold them on the iOS App Store I would be willing to pay £40 for Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, and let's not forget Harvest Moon! I'm sure I'm not the only one.

well if your nephews are not interested in Nintendo hardware, that's because they are not interested in their software. It's pretty straight forward.

Nintendo should just close their door.

Harvest moon is not even a Nintendo game.

Same here. I'd be willing to pay $19.99 per title from NES era, Gameboy, through N64.

I avidly game on ipad and iphone and honestly, none of these peripherals make sense to me on a touch based device. Really looking forward to the future with haptic feedback, this is ultimately what we need and what will work best on a touch platform. Honorable mention to bluetooth controllers but I personally really don't want to deal with them if I can avoid it. Controllers are great for console experiences and I'm sure they'll continue to do well there, but these intermediate hybrid devices that try to fit with the touch device always seem clunky and weird.

Except that Nintendo still sells those 20 year old games, so yeah...they are kinda losing revenue.

People Making Nintendo Emulators and Nintendo ROMs are Helping Publishers by Making Old Games Available that are No Longer Being Sold by the Copyright Owner. This Does Not Hurt Anyone and Allows Gamers to Play Old Favorites. What's the Problem?

The problem is that it's illegal. Copyrights and trademarks of games are corporate assets. If these vintage titles are available far and wide, it undermines the value of this intellectual property and adversely affects the right owner. In addition, the assumption that the games involved are vintage or nostalgia games is incorrect. Nintendo is famous for bringing back to life its popular characters for its newer systems, for example, Mario and Donkey Kong have enjoyed their adventures on all Nintendo platforms, going from coin-op machines to our latest hardware platforms. As a copyright owner, and creator of such famous characters, only Nintendo has the right to benefit from such valuable assets.

Sorry to hear your nephews have terrible taste.

The bigger issue, of course, is that if Nintendo goes the software route they will ultimately become a shell of their former selves and eventually have to go out of business completely.

You can't maintain the quality of software that they do by taking a 98% cut in profit.

Look at what happened to Sega. They went third party back in 2001. They were fine for maybe six years or so but now they'er basically down to making Sonic games and Football Manager.

Source? Losing enough to warrant the cost of a lawsuit?

Nintendo could keep making their wiis and release a few big name titles for iOS as well...

One of the biggest features on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U is the Virtual Console, where Nintendo sells software from the NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Turbographix-16, Neo Geo, Game Boy, Game Gear, and others.

Linky-link here.

You forgot about Pokemon  the most important one!

I imagine Nintendo will make just as much profit off of X/Y in the two months that it's available this year that App Store developers will have made in the entire year.

Hell, they made more money off of Animal Crossing in Japan alone than all of Rovio made last year.

Oh yea, I remember buying Mario via wii a few years ago...

Still, not enough to go through lawsuits chasing down ROM runners...

It'll be a long way off that an IPad moves in on an Xbox with a giant TV attached. :D

I'm all for it though. (I don't have a TV and Xbox pushed a mandatory firmware update that immediately broke my disk drive last year)

Two years ago I said it was at least three years off, so my guess is still that next year you will see the beginning of the die off.

Of course not, but it's a bit of a bold-faced lie to just say "Oh nobody profits off of 20-year old games anymore."

Pshahahaha what a joke.

Giant ugly attachment for your phone to play all those great games that don't exist.

Sad and true...

In theory it's a brilliant idea and something I would really like to see developed though there won't be too many decent games supporting it I suspect.

What about wanting to play on BOTH iPhone and iPad? This attachment won't fit an iPad... They are kidding themselves if they think people will buy both.

Dang it! I want something smaller that I can use as a case for all the time I use my phone...

Something this big and bulky should also come with a extended battery charger for extended game play.

At least it will have dual purpose.

But why does this remind me of the Lynx?

that looks so 90's...so NESish
but bigger))
